    The concept of length, the concept is synonymous, the concept is nothing more than, the proper definition of a concept ... Forget programs and visions; the operational approach refers specifically to concepts, and in a very specific way: it describes the process whereby concepts are transformed into a series of operations—which, in their turn, allow to measure all sorts of objects. Operationalizing means building a bridge from concepts to measurement, and then to the world. In our case: from the concepts of literary theory, through some form of quantification, to literary texts.

    From the very beginning literary discourse plays a decisive role in the context of colonial discourse of power. Even Anna Seghers, a progressive socialist authoress with a fixation on the Enlightenment, the French Revolution and the Jewish-Christian tradition is unable to detach herself from the European claim on universality. In a tensely opposed relationship of projection and otherness, of "memoria" and intertextuality, Heiner Müller, however, understands literature in the sense of Emanuel Lévina's respect for the other being as a work on difference. Vom Anfang an spielt im kolonialen Machtdiskurs der Literaturdiskurs eine entscheidende Rolle. Auch Anna Seghers als fortschrittliche, sozialistische Autorin kann sich mit ihrer Fixierung auf Aufklärung, Französische Revolution und jüdisch-christliche Tradition nicht vom europäischen Universalismus-Anspruch lösen. In einem Spannungsverhältnis von Projektion und Alterität, von Memoria und Intertextualität versteht Heiner Müller dagegen Literatur im Sinne von Emanuel Lévinas' Achtung des Anderen als Arbeit an der Differenz.

    In this article, we analyse the use of modality markers in a German text taken from the Freiburger Korpus. We notice how the necessity of preserving face influences the speakers' choices of downgraders and upgraders, devices that determine the intensity of the speech acts and, therefore, the mood of the interaction. Die Autorin analysiert die Anwendung der modality markers einem Text aus dem Freiburger Korpus. Sie zeigt wie das Bedürfnis, das Gesicht zu wahren, die Sprecher dazu führt, downgraders oder upgraders auszuwählen, die die Intensität der Sprechakte und damit auch die emotionale Stimmung der Interaktion steuern.

    From Vater's Thesis, I bring the discussion about the future verbal tense to the centre of discussion. The aim is to prove hat the future verbal tenses can also express time in German, and, therefore, they have to be included in the verbal System and, secondly, that the expression of modality can also be expressed by the future forms, and that it usually overlaps the notion of time. Ausgehend von Heinz Vaters These, das Futur der deutschen Verben habe keine temporale Bedeutung, stelle ich die Frage der Futurtempora erneut zur Diskussion. Meine Absicht ist es, zunächst zu beweisen, dass auch im Deutschen die Futurtempora Zeit ausdrücken und daher als Tempora in das Verbalsystem aufgenommen werden können, aber dass der modale Charakter bei den Futurtempora auch eine wichtige Rolle spielt.
