    Als Adorno 1950 nach Deutschland zurückkehrte, kam er in ein Land, dem er zutiefst misstraute. Die objektive Unmöglichkeit, hier wieder zu existieren und zu arbeiten, wurde für ihn paradoxerweise zum Stimulans seiner Existenz und Arbeit. Statt sich innerlich an die neue Umwelt anzupassen, immunisierte er sich ihr gegenüber. Als jemand, der nicht dazugehören wollte, vermochte er die zähen Rückstände einer Ideologie der Zusammengehörigkeit zu zersetzen. Eine Rücksichtnahme auf sogenannte fundamentale Gewissheiten war aus seiner Sicht deswegen nicht geboten, weil sich solche Gewissheiten als Selbsttäuschung erwiesen hatten. In dem Maße, wie Adorno im Deutschland der Nachkriegszeit ein Bedürfnis nach kritischer Reinigung verspürte, begann sich sein intellektuelles und publizistisches Schaffen expansiv zu entfalten. Der Außenseiter, der gebraucht wurde, rückte unverhofft ins Zentrum, ohne doch sein Außenseitertum einzubüßen. Wenn Gershom Scholem, Adornos Briefpartner, tastend, von seiner neuen israelischen Heimat herkommend, über die Schweiz wieder Kontakt mit Deutschland, seiner alten Heimat, aufnimmt, so vollzieht sich bei ihm eine ähnliche Entwicklung wie bei Adorno. Dass auch er innerhalb der deutschen Geisteswelt eine Rolle zu spielen beginnt – allerdings später als Adorno –, kann überraschen. Als Katalysator dafür fungiert die Durchsetzung des OEuvres von Walter Benjamin. Das Werk Adornos wird durch seinen Briefwechsel mit Scholem, dem entschiedenen Juden, in ein neues Licht gerückt. Deutlicher als vorher tritt nun zutage, wie sehr doch das Denken Adornos von spezifisch jüdischen Intuitionen bestimmt wird.

    Lors d'une migration, le passage d'une langue maternelle à une langue étrangère suscite plusieurs questionnements identitaires, culturels et politiques. Ceci d'autant plus si la situation linguistique est complexe dans le pays d'origine et dans le pays d'accueil. En l-'occurrence, dans son roman autobiographique "Die undankbare Fremde" (2012), Irena Brežná crée à partir de deux trames narratives alternantes un lieu de rencontre entre deux mondes différents. Elle donne une importance considérable à la langue qu'elle prend comme point de départ pour démontrer les différences culturelles et politiques entre l'ex-Tchécoslovaquie et la Suisse en même temps qu'elle remet en cause les crises identitaires qui peuvent résulter d'une migration ou d'une fuite. Le présent article a pour objectif de mettre en évidence les différentes fonctions attribuées à la langue dans un contexte plurilingue et de migration tout en argumentant qu'Irena Brežná invite, à travers la lecture de son roman critique, à une participation active dans la construction d'une société ouverte à l’immigration.

    The paper engages with the works of Thomas Kling (1957-2005) and elaborates on the specific incorporation of history in Klings poetics. Kling was both known for his wild style of lyrical performance as well as for his vast knowledge of history. Kling aptly puts the style of his lectures in the tradition of the "histrion", the actor in ancient Rome. The paper argues that the connection of history and the theatricality of the histrion becomes fundamental to his poetics. History is for Kling a material that combines linguistic, cultural and literary references that need a performative elaboration. The paper traces this constellation of performativity and history within Klings early poems and essays. It then turns towards a reading of his poems "Manhattan Mundraum" and "Manhattan Mundraum Zwei". In these poems Kling intertwines the performative aspects of his poetics with an inquiry into the history that has shaped the island of Manhattan and the language of its "Mundraum".

    The article examines the textile trace that constitutes the spatial system and narrative of Gottfried Keller's "Regine"-novella (1881). Keller’s novella can be read as an example of a shift that takes place in the literary use of textiles in the nineteenth century. Until then textiles in literature - such as the veil or the weave - were mostly of metaphorical importance. Interlaced with socio-economical changes in production, distribution and consumption of textiles, this changed toward a more material approach. In a close reading of the novella, the article shows how Keller explores und undermines the suggestive and imaginative potential of fabrics while expounding the figures' struggle with the sheer materiality of their surroundings.

    "Königliche Hoheit", Thomas Mann's second novel, is as replete with descriptions of interiors, paintings, decorations and other spatial features as it is obsessed with the very concept of 'representation'. The complex interplay of 'space' and 'signification' that underlies this text has not received much scholarly attention. This paper attempts to elucidate how "Königliche Hoheit" interweaves descriptions of space(s) and thorny semiotic issues. In the process, it seeks to show that the novel, far from being a harmless 'fairytale' grounded in Mann's own biography, is suffused with exclusionary ideology.
