    Comment interpréter le terme de "Gewalt" dans 'Die heilige Cäcilie oder die Gewalt der Musik' (1811) de Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811)? Faut-il le comprendre dans son sens figuré, en tant que métaphore (pouvoir, puissance), ou dans son sens littéral, en tant que phénomène physique et sensuel (violence)? Quoiqu'il en soit, le titre de la nouvelle suggère dans tous les cas un lien étroit, peut-être spécifique, entre la musique et la violence. Comment le texte représente-t-il cette relation? L'affirme-t-il comme allant de soi? Ou comme se manifestant seulement sous certaines conditions? Ce rapport à la violence se retrouve-t-il dans d'autres formes d'art invoquées dans ce texte? Qu'arrive-t-il à la musique quand elle-même est violente - ou jouée à des fins violentes? A travers ces questions, nous examinerons comment la 'Cäcilie' établit un raisonnement rigoureux en cinq étapes sur la relation entre musique et violence et comment Kleist remet en question les jugements esthétiques, critiques et religieux de son époque.

    The representation of music in literature is often conceived in terms of a 'paragone', a debate over which of the arts ranks highest. In this context, literature is commonly spoken of as imitative or emulative of the music it is trying to represent. This premise informs even the most recent terminologies of literary scholars describing the intermedial relationship of music and literature systematically. Using the narratological concepts of 'showing vs. telling' to describe musical representation in literature, as proposed by the "Handbuch Literatur & Musik", this article argues that such a view is based on a misleading assumption about literary imitation and leads to constrained possibilities of hermeneutical interpretation. After a systematic reconstruction of the proposed terminology and a proposal for its modification, an exemplary analysis of Helmut Krausser's novel "Melodien" ["Melodies", 1993] will serve to demonstrate how a refined conception of the terminology can help to bring about more precise interpretations.

    In the 1924 novella "Fräulein Else" by Arthur Schnitzler, intermediality influences narrative empathy. Written in the stream of consciousness technique, the text presents an examination of the nineteen-year-old protagonist's inner struggle and its sexual implications (to save her father from jail, Else must approach an elderly acquaintance to borrow money from him), arousing the reader's empathy. The image of Else is supported, even overlapped by hidden art references - examples of how women have been portrayed and represented in art and cultural history. In the most famous moment of the novella - Else undresses herself during a public concert - the stream of consciousness is interrupted by musical excerpts. Mostly considered as an emotional catalyst, at this point the musical quotation is blocking narrative empathy. Else's thoughts as well as her naked body become unreadable, because the notation is indifferent towards the reader's desires. Paradoxically, the narrative turning point is represented by an intermedial censorship.

Was war das Herausragende an diesem Literaturwissenschaftler? Anstelle eines Nachrufs im eigentlichen Sinne versucht Christian Villiger im Folgenden, Böschensteins Zugang zur Literatur genauer zu charakterisieren und dabei auch diese Frage zu beantworten.
