    Digital documentation of cultural heritage is a very important issue that is receiving increasing attention from the scientific community. The availability of accurate 3D models of historical buildings is crucial to preserve our cultural heritage, because it allows us to reconstruct them in case of fortuitous collapse or intentional demolition or damage. In this paper, we present a new approach for the digital documentation of cultural heritage. Our approach is based on a hybridization of different techniques for data capture and processing and image analysis, with the aim of obtaining 3D models from images and the texturing of these models. In particular, we rely on convergent photogrammetry as way to acquire information about the real objects for generation of 3D models. We also apply computer vision and artificial intelligence techniques for further processing of all acquired data. As a result, we have developed a new way to obtain digital documentation of cultural heritage from data by using accurate reverse engineering techniques. Our methodology has been successfully applied to the digital documentation of a famous historical building in the city of Santander: the Royal Palace of Magdalena, the conference venue of this conference Cyberworlds' 2014.

    Newspapers became extremely popular in Germany during the 18th and 19th century, and thus increasingly influential for modern German. However, due to the lack of digitized historical newspaper corpora for German, this influence could not be analyzed systematically. In this paper, we introduce the Mannheim Corpus of Digital Newspapers and Magazines, which in its current release comprises 21 newspapers and magazines from the 18th and 19th century. With over 4.1 Mio tokens in about 650 volumes it currently constitutes the largest historical corpus dedicated to newspapers in German. We briefly discuss the prospect of the corpus for analyzing the evolution of news as a genre in its own right and the influence of contextual parameters such as region and register on the language of news. We then focus on one historically influential aspect of newspapers – their role in disseminating foreign words in German. Our preliminary quantitative results indeed indicate that newspapers use foreign words significantly more frequently than other genres, in particular belles lettres.

    Kommunikationsverben, an online reference work on German communication verbs and part of the dictionary portal OWID, describes the meaning of communication verbs on two levels: a lexical level, represented in the dictionary entries and by sets of lexical features, and a conceptual level, represented by different types of situations referred to by specific types of verbs. These two levels have each been implemented in special types of access structures. A first explorative access to the conceptual level provides the user with a list of the main classes of communication verbs, the subclasses of each of these, and the lexical fields pertaining to each subclass. Lexical fields are presented together with a characterisation of the situation type to which the verbs of that field are used to refer. Information about the conceptual level is additionally accessible by an advanced search option allowing the user to combine components of the characterisation of situation types to “create” any kind of situation and search for the verbs that correspond to it. Information about the lexical level of the meaning of communication verbs is accessible via the dictionary entries and by another advanced search option allowing the user to search for verbs with particular lexical features or combinations of these.

    Der Beitrag betrachtet lexikalisch-semantische Relationen aus einer emergentistischen Perspektive vor dem Hintergrund eines korpusgeleiteten empirisch-linguistischen Ansatzes. Er skizziert, wie eine systematische Erfassung und Auswertung des Kookkurrenzverhaltens von Lexemen – die Analyse der Ahnlichkeit von Kookkurrenzprofilen mit Hilfe von selbstorganisierenden lexikalischen Merkmalskarten und ihre im Diskurs verankerte Interpretation – wichtige Einblicke in die Struktur verschiedenartiger Verwendungsaspekte dieser Lexeme einschlieslich ihrer semantischen Nahe ermoglichen. Die vorgestellte Methodik wird dabei –uber die explorativ-analytischen Zielsetzungen hinaus – als eine abduktive, auf Theoriebildung zielende Generalisierungsstrategie im postulierten Lexikon-Syntax-Kontinuum verstanden. Zum Schluss werden die Anwendungsmoglichkeiten einiger Komponenten dieser Methodik in der Lexikografie, Lexikologie und Didaktik diskutiert.

    ^This paper describes DeReKo (Deutsches Referenzkorpus), the Archive of General Reference Corpora of Contemporary Written German at the Institut für Deutsche Sprache (IDS) in Mannheim, and the rationale behind its development. We discuss its design, its legal background, how to access it, available metadata, linguistic annotation layers, underlying standards, ongoing developments, and aspects of using the archive for empirical linguistic research. The focus of the paper is on the advantages of DEREKO’s design as a primordial sample from which virtual corpora can be drawn for the specific purposes of individual studies. Both concepts, primordial sample and virtual corpus are explained and illustrated in detail. Furthermore, we describe in more detail how DEREKO deals with the fact that all its texts are subject to third parties’ intellectual property rights, and how it deals with the issue of replicability, which is particularly challenging given DEREKO’s dynamic growth and the possibility to construct from it an open number of virtual corpora.

    The web portal Lehnwortportal Deutsch (lwp.ids-mannheim.de), developed at the Institute for the German Language (IDS), aims to provide unified access to existing and possibly new dictionaries of German loanwords in other languages. Internally, the lexicographical information is represented as a directed acyclic graph of relations between words. The graph abstracts from the idiosyncrasies of the individual component dictionaries. This paper explores two different strategies to make complex graph-based cross-dictionary queries in such a portal more accessible to users. The first strategy effectively hides the underlying graph structure, but allows users to assign scopes (internally defined in terms of the graph structure) to search criteria. A second type of search strategy directly formulates queries in terms of the relational graph structure. In this case, search results are not entries but n-tuples of words (metalemmata, loanwords, etyma); a query consists of specifying properties of these words and relations between them. A working prototype of an easy-to-use human-readable declarative query language is presented and ways to interactively construct queries are discussed.

    To design effective electronic dictionaries, reliable empirical information on how dictionaries are actually being used is of great value for lexicographers. To my knowledge, no existing empirical research addresses the context of dictionary use, or the extra-lexicographic situations in which a dictionary consultation is embedded. This is mainly due to the fact that data about these contexts is difficult to obtain. To take a first step in closing this research gap, I incorporated an open-ended question (“In which contexts or situations would you use a dictionary?”) into the online survey (N = 684) and asked the participants to answer this question by providing as much information as possible. Instead of presenting well-known facts about standardized types of usage situation, this paper will focus on the more offbeat circumstances of dictionary use and aims of users, as they are reflected in the responses. Overall, the results indicate that there is a community whose work is closely linked with dictionaries and, accordingly, they deal very routinely with this type of text. Dictionaries are also seen as a linguistic treasure trove for games or crossword puzzles, and as a standard which can be referred to as an authority. While it is important to emphasize that the results are only preliminary, they do indicate the potential of empirical research in this area.

    The research project “German Today” aims to determine the amount of regional variation in (near-) standard German spoken by young and older educated adults, and to identify and locate the regional features. To this end, an extensive corpus of read and spontaneous speech is currently being compiled. German is a so-called pluricentric language. With our corpus we aim to determine whether national or regional standards really exist. Furthermore, the linguistic variation due to different contextual styles (read vs. spontaneous speech) shall be analysed. Finally, the corpus will enable us to investigate whether linguistic change has occurred in the domain of the German standard language. The main focus of all research questions is on phonetic variation (lexical variation is only of minor interest). Read and spontaneous speech of four secondary school students (aged seventeen to twenty) and two fifty- to sixt-year-olds is recorded in 160 cities throughout the German-speaking area of Europe. All participants read a number of short texts and word lists, name pictures, translate from English, and take part in a sociobiographic interview and a map task experiment. The resulting corpus will comprise over 1000 hours of orthographically and (in part) phonetically transcribed speech.
