    The article compares the semantic range of two verbs expressing 'necessity' in Spanish and Portuguese. Due to the typological proximity of both languages, it is not surprising that they dispose of the same verbal means to express 'necessity': neces(s)itar and precisar (de). There is, however, a striking difference in the quantity with which these two verbs occur in either language: While necesitar is much more common in Spanish, it is exactly the opposite in Portuguese, where precisar (de) is found more often. Although previous studies have pointed out these quantative differences, they have not really been accounted for yet. Based on various web corpora of historical Spanish and Portuguese, the analysis at hand presents a contrastive study of the diachronic development of neces(s)itar and precisar (de) in Spanish and Portuguese. It is shown that there are slight differences in the frequency and functions with which both verbs occur from the very beginning, leading to more divergent usages in the development from Old to Modern Spanish / Portuguese. In addition, the analysis shows that the quantative differences cannot be accounted for from a merely semantic point of view, since part of the semantic restrictions observed are linked to syntactic ones.
