    This book explores Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Alexander Kluge's analyses of the role that a rejuvenation in the capacity for imagination can play in encouraging us to reconceive the possibilities of the past, the present, and the future outside of the parameters of the status quo. The concept of imagination to which the title of the book refers is not a strictly defined, stable concept, but rather a term which is employed to refer to a capacity that facilitates both an active, creative relationship to one's environment, and a process of mediation between the outside world and one's own experiences and memories. Through a detailed analysis of their engagements with subjects that span a broad range of historical and thematic contexts (including topics as diverse as literature, children's play, film, photography, history, and television) the book charts the extent to which the concept of imagination plays a central role in Benjamin, Kracauer, and Kluge's explorations of a mode of perception and experience which could serve as a catalyst for the creation and sustenance of a desire for a different kind of future.

    Originally published between 1944 and 1953, Poyln (Poland) is one of the treasures of Yiddish literature. Despite its reputation, the book has not been fully translated into English until now. Written by Yehiel Yeshaia Trunk, a prominent Polish Jewish writer, Poyln is a colourful epic, a moving testimony, and an important primary historical source that presents a portrait of Polish Jewry against the backdrop of the Nazi genocide.The undisputed hero of the story is the national community of Polish Jews. To portray this community, Trunk creates a rich gallery of characters - Hassidic patricians, timber merchants, rich landowners, brilliant Talmudists, Orthodox rabbis, and Hasidic tsadikim. He also depicts ordinary village and small-town Jews, artisans, shopkeepers, workers, and Luftmenschen, all of them members of one extended family. Particularly valuable aspects of Poyln are its examination of different trends in the Hasidic movement and the author's attempt to bridge the gap between his secular generation and its religious ancestors. In short, Trunk's work aims to show Jewishness as a way of life.This is the first instalment of a multi-volume edition of Poyln, the first English translation to be published.     The wave of neoliberal economic reforms in the developing world since the 1980s has been regarded as the result of both severe economic crises and policy pressures from global financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Aufgrund seiner schnellen Produktionsweise und seiner Stellung zwischen Schriftlichkeit und Mündlichkeit, zwischen städtischer ‘Unterhaltungsindustrie’ und höfischer Repräsentation, ist das Drama von allen Textsorten am ehesten in der Lage, die sozialen, religiösen und politischen Spannungen des Zeitalters zu verhandeln. Dieser Sammelband bietet einen Überblick über Spielarten des englischen, französischen, spanischen und deutschen Dramas in der Frühen Neuzeit, vom geistlichen Spiel des Mittelalters bis zur Auseinandersetzung mit den Klassikern der europäischen Renaissance in der Romantik. Main description: In the transition to the Early Modern Age, drama forms the dominant genre. With its speed of production and its position between the written and the oral, between the urban ‘entertainment industry’ and courtly representation, drama is the text type best suited to dealing with the social, religious and political tensions of the age. This collected volume provides an overview of the English, French, Spanish and German variants of drama in the Early Modern Age, from the religious plays of the Middle Ages to the engagement with classics of the European Renaissance in the Romantic Age.
