    Trotz mancher Diffamierungskampagnen, bei denen es vor allem um seine marxistischen Anschauungen ging, hat Brecht – im Gegensatz zu einer Reihe anderer linker Autoren – seinen Rang als einer der Klassiker der Weltliteratur des 20. Jahrhunderts behaupten können. Besonders angesichts der ökonomischen Krisen der letzten Jahre sind viele seiner Themenstellungen wieder höchst aktuell geworden. Eine verstärkte Auseinandersetzung mit seinen Werken ist daher nicht nur unter literaturhistorischer, sondern auch unter gesellschaftspolitischer Perspektive so relevant wie eh und je. Dabei sollte auf keine der von ihm aufgegriffenen Fragestellungen – ob nun seine Einstellung zu Krieg und Frieden, zur bürgerlichen Klasse, zum Problem der Utopie, zum Nazifaschismus, zu einer neuen Musik, zur trostlosen Eventkultur und zur Verneinung des Tragischen – verzichtet werden. Dem versucht auch dieses Buch nachzukommen.

    In the process of establishing the social and political reality of the German Democratic Republic, writers played a crucial role. The specific feature of GDR literary texts of the 1960s lies in their attempt at imagining and representing the emergence of a community that had previously not existed. A new sense of common belonging was being promoted. This study focuses on the ways in which Werner Bräunig and Erik Neutsch negotiated this tension in their novels by analysing the spatial and topographical dimensions of the texts. If literary texts map power structures by rewriting cartographies, then the analysis of the latter will shed light on the socio-political models that are being advocated. Neutsch’s Spur der Steine (1964) and Bräunig’s fragment Rummelplatz (2007) were both written in the 1960s but enjoyed a very different reception: while the former became a bestseller, the latter was censored and published posthumously in 2007. Yet they both speak to GDR society of the 1960s, highlighting the evocative power of literature within the East German context – and beyond.

    Born of the dream of fostering a new caste of writers from working-class ranks, the «Movement of Writing Workers» (Bewegung schreibender Arbeiter) offers a paradigmatic view of the successes and failures of attempts to implement a socialist cultural revolution in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The abstract tenets of Marxist teleology and state-sponsored programmes ascribed to «writing workers» a central position in the efforts to overcome class divisions, educational privilege and, ultimately, the distinctions between workers and intellectuals, art and labour. This study, based largely on original archival research, traces the historical background and development of this major cultural initiative. It undermines the notion of servile obedience to Soviet direction in East German cultural affairs and displays the discrepancies between the official rhetoric of the ruling communist party and the realities of popular cultural participation. While there existed over 200 «Circles of Writing Workers» in the GDR – also known as «socialist literary salons» – the four case studies featured here highlight their diversity and stake out the broad parameters of state-sponsored literary production in East Germany.
