    Using a data base of more than 86,000 verb tokens taken from a collection of autograph texts written by fifty-one different natives of Nuremberg between 1356 and 1619, this book explores some of the many changes in verbal inflection that took place during the Early New High German period and the implications of these changes for a number of important issues in morphological and diachronic theory. Nearly all instances of change or variation in verbal inflection observable in the texts are described. Changes discussed at greater length include: the leveling of certain stem-vowel alternations among the strong, weak, and preterite-present verbs; the leveling of the consonant alternations attributed to Verner's Law; regularizations of originally strong and preterite-present verbs and irregularizations of originally weak verbs; shifts in the lexical distribution of the past-participle prefix ge-; and changes in many forms of the verb sein. The nature and size of the data base, the number and diversity of writers included, and innovative methods of data collection and analysis make possible a description of these changes that is in many cases more detailed than any previously available account. This empirical work provides a foundation for the discussion of a number of theoretical questions, including: the role of factors such as iconicity, system congruity and type and token frequency in morphological change; the directionality of analogical leveling; the adequacy of connectionist and related models of morphological processing; the nature of morphological haplology; and the relationship between sociolinguistic variation and diachronic change

    Main description: It has been customary to regard morphological irregularity as an accident of language change and accordingly its eventual disappearance as only a matter of time. This study undertakes a fundamental re-evaluation of that assumption. On the basis of a contrastive analysis of ten highly frequent verbs in ten Germanic languages it shows that irregularity is in fact consistently generated in an astonishingly systematic way. In the course of the discussion it transpires that irregularity and brevity of expression are closely associated. The detailed description of irregularity principles is followed by a theoretical section. Here, the negative concept of irregularity is replaced by that of differentiation, which is shown to have a positive function in connection with high token frequency because it allows for formal brevity without any risk of syncretism. Against this background total suppletion represents the ideal combination of maximal differentiation and brevity of expression

    Using a data base of more than 86,000 verb tokens taken from a collection of autograph texts written by fifty-one different natives of Nuremberg between 1356 and 1619, this book explores some of the many changes in verbal inflection that took place during the Early New High German period and the implications of these changes for a number of important issues in morphological and diachronic theory. Nearly all instances of change or variation in verbal inflection observable in the texts are described. Changes discussed at greater length include: the leveling of certain stem-vowel alternations among the strong, weak, and preterite-present verbs; the leveling of the consonant alternations attributed to Verner's Law; regularizations of originally strong and preterite-present verbs and irregularizations of originally weak verbs; shifts in the lexical distribution of the past-participle prefix ge-; and changes in many forms of the verb sein. The nature and size of the data base, the number and diversity of writers included, and innovative methods of data collection and analysis make possible a description of these changes that is in many cases more detailed than any previously available account. This empirical work provides a foundation for the discussion of a number of theoretical questions, including: the role of factors such as iconicity, system congruity and type and token frequency in morphological change; the directionality of analogical leveling; the adequacy of connectionist and related models of morphological processing; the nature of morphological haplology; and the relationship between sociolinguistic variation and diachronic change.

    Main description: It has been customary to regard morphological irregularity as an accident of language change and accordingly its eventual disappearance as only a matter of time. This study undertakes a fundamental re-evaluation of that assumption. On the basis of a contrastive analysis of ten highly frequent verbs in ten Germanic languages it shows that irregularity is in fact consistently generated in an astonishingly systematic way. In the course of the discussion it transpires that irregularity and brevity of expression are closely associated. The detailed description of irregularity principles is followed by a theoretical section. Here, the negative concept of irregularity is replaced by that of differentiation, which is shown to have a positive function in connection with high token frequency because it allows for formal brevity without any risk of syncretism. Against this background total suppletion represents the ideal combination of maximal differentiation and brevity of expression

    Main description: Wurde morphologische Irregularität bisher als Unfall des Sprachwandels betrachtet, deren analoge Beseitigung nur eine Frage der Zeit sei, so erfährt sie hier eine grundlegende Neubewertung: Anhand der kontrastiven Analyse von zehn hochfrequenten Verben in zehn germanischen Sprachen wird gezeigt, daß Irregularität immer wieder in erstaunlich systematischer Weise produziert wird. Dabei wird deutlich, daß Irregularität und Ausdruckskürze eng miteinander gekoppelt sind. Auf die detaillierte Darstellung der Irregularisierungsprinzipien folgt ein theoretischer Teil. This empirical work provides a foundation for the discussion of a number of theoretical questions, including: the role of factors such as iconicity, system congruity and type and token frequency in morphological change; the directionality of analogical leveling; the adequacy of connectionist and related models of morphological processing; the nature of morphological haplology; and the relationship between sociolinguistic variation and diachronic change

    Semantic theories based on predicate-argument structures have always acknowledged that lexical information associated with verbs is the basic source for the rudimentary semantic structure of sentences. The central role of verbs in sentence structure has become a major insight of modern syntactic theories since the lexical turn in linguistics, too. As a result of this development there has been an increasing interest in theories on the lexical representation of verbs. This paper will briefly review prevailing theories on verb semantics (section 1), showing that they can capture only a part of the wide range of syntactic and semantic phenomena dependent on verb meaning. For several of these phenomena (section 2) it will turn out that a theory based on highly structured events is more suitable for representing verb meaning. This theory is based on the idea that verbs refer to events that consist of several subevents which are temporally related, classified according to their duration, and whose event participants are connected to some but not necessarily all subevents by semantic relations (section 3).
