    Der georgischen Sprache fehlt es nicht an mehr oder weniger alltäglich gebrauchten deutschen Fremdwörtern. Den meisten haftet ihr Umweg durch das Russische an, den sie während der kaiserlichen und späteren sowjetischen Herrschaft über Georgien gemacht haben. [.] Allerdings stößt man in dem prägenden sowjetgeorgischen Fremdwörterbuch, das zwischen 1964 und 1989 dreimal aufgelegt wurde, gerade beim Eintrag 'schtraikbrecheri' auf eine durchaus seltsame Bestimmung: "schtraikbrecher-i (dt. 'Streikbrecher') - in kapitalistischen Ländern: eine Person, die während des Streiks arbeitet und den Streik stört." Die stillschweigende Voraussetzung, Streikbrecher existierten nur "in kapitalistischen Ländern", weil es in den sozialistischen keine Streiks gebe, wirft in ihrer Verlogenheit erst recht die Frage nach der Vor- und Nachgeschichte dieses Begriffs auf.

    The web portal Lehnwortportal Deutsch <lwp.ids-mannheim.de>, developed at the Institute for the German Language (IDS), aims to provide unified access to a growing number of lexicographical resources on German loanwords in other languages. This paper discusses different possibilities of creating an onomasiological access structure for portal users. We critically examine the meaning list of the “World Loanword Database” project (Haspelmath/Tadmor 2009a) as well as WordNet-based taxonomies and propose a new way of inductively creating a semantic classification scheme that takes both hyperonymic relations and semantic fields into account. We show how such a classification can be integrated into the underlying graph-based data representation of the Lehnwortportal and thus be exploited for advanced onomasiological search options.

    Lena Schnee analysiert in ihrem Beitrag "Eingenordet - Morphologische Assimilation mittelniederdeutscher Lehnwörter im Altnordischen" die Liste mittelniederdeutscher Entlehnungen im Altnordischen Etymologischen Wörterbuch und zeigt, wie die mittelniederdeutschen Wörter, die in der Hansezeit in die skandinavischen Sprachen entlehnt wurden, an das Altnordische angepasst wurden. Dabei wendet sie ein Transderivationsmodell an, um die morphologische Assimilation nicht nur von ganzen Lexemen, sondern auch von Affixen und Wortstämmen nachzuvollziehen. Schnees Untersuchung ergibt, dass bei der Entlehnung in das Altnordische hauptsächlich die Affixe adaptiert wurden. Die mittelniederdeutschen Affixe wurden überwiegend durch native oder entlehnte altnordische ersetzt, was darauf hinweist, dass die Morphemgrenzen und Wortbildungselemente bei der Entlehnung als solche erkannt wurden. Als Erklärung hierfür führt Schnee die typologische Ähnlichkeit der beiden Sprachen an.

    This paper addresses the question of why we face unsatisfactory German dictionary entries when looking up and comparing two similar lexical terms that are loan words, new words, (near)-synonyms, or confusables. It explains how users are aware of existing reference works but still search or post on language forums, often after consulting a dictionary and experiencing a range of dictionary-based problems. Firstly, these dictionary-based difficulties will be scrutinised in more detail with respect to content, function, presentation, and the language of definitions. Entries documenting loan words and commonly confused pairs from different lexical reference resources serve as examples to show the shortcomings. Secondly, I will explain why learning about your target group involves studying discussion forums. Forums are a valuable source for detailed user studies, enabling the examination of different communicative needs, concrete linguistic questions, speakers’ intuitions, and people’s reactions to posts and comments. Thirdly, with the help of two examples I will describe how the study of chats and forums had a major impact on the development of a recently compiled German dictionary of confusables. Finally, that same problem-solving approach is applied to the idea of a future dictionary of neologisms and their synonyms.

    This paper presents the Lehnwortportal Deutsch, a new, freely accessible publication platform for resources on German lexical borrowings in other languages, to be launched in the second half of 2022. The system will host digital-native sources as well as existing, digitized paper dictionaries on loanwords, initially for some 15 recipient languages. All resources remain accessible as individual standalone dictionaries; in addition, data on words (etyma, loanwords etc.) together with their senses and relations to each other is represented as a cross-resource network in a graph database, with careful distinction between information present in the original sources and the curated portal network data resulting from matching and merging information on, e. g., lexical units appearing in multiple dictionaries. Special tooling is available for manually creating graphs from dictionary entries during digitization and for editing and augmenting the graph database. The user interface allows users to browse individual dictionaries, navigate through the underlying graph and ‘click together’ complex queries on borrowing constellations in the graph in an intuitive way. The web application will be available as open source.

    In the etymological information for a word in a dictionary, the first question to be answered is whether the word is a borrowing or the result of word formation. Here, we consider this question for internationalisms ending in -ation in German and in -ácia in Slovak. In German, -ation is a suffix that attaches to verbs in -ieren. For these verbs, it is in competition with -ung. In Slovak, -ácia is a suffix that attaches to bases of Latin or Greek origin. The corresponding verbs are often backformations. Most Slovak verbs also have a nominalization in -nie. In order to investigate to what extent the nouns in -ation or -ácia are borrowings or derived from the corresponding verbs in German and Slovak, we took a random sample of English nouns in -ation for which OED gives a corresponding verb. For this sample, we checked whether the cognate noun in -ation or -ácia is attested in standard dictionaries and in corpora. Then we did the same for the corresponding verbs and the nouns in -ung or -nie. Finally, we checked the frequency of these words in DeReKo for German and SNK for Slovak. On this basis, we found evidence that -ation in German has a slightly different status to -ácia in Slovak. This status affects the relationship to the corresponding verbs and to the nouns in -ung or -nie. Such generalizations are important as background information for specifying etymological information in dictionaries, especially for languages where first attestations dates are not readily available.

    This paper focuses on standardological and lexicographical aspects of Coronavirus-related neologisms in Croatian. The presented results are based on corpus analysis. The initial corpus for this analysis consists of terms collected for the Glossary of Coronavirus. This corpus has been supplemented by terms we collected on the Internet and from the media. The General Croatian corpora: Croatian Web Corpus – hrWaC (cf. Ljubešić/Klubička 2016) and Croatian Language Repository (cf. Brozović Rončević/Ćavar 2008: 173–186) were also used, but since they do not include neologisms that entered the language after 2013, they could be used only to check terms in the language before that time. From October 2021, a specialized Corona corpus compiled by Štrkalj Despot and Ostroški Anić (2021) became publicly available on request. The data from these corpora are analyzed by Sketch Engine (cf. Kilgarriff et al. 2004: 105–116), a corpus query system loaded with the corpora, enabling the display of lexeme context through concordances and (differential) word sketches and the extraction of keywords (terms) and N-grams. The most common collocations are sorted into syntactic categories. For English equivalents, in addition to the sources found on the Internet, enTenTen2020 corpus was consulted. In the second part of the paper, we analyze and compare the presentation of Coronavirus terminology in the descriptive Glossary of Coronavirus and the normative Croatian Web Dictionary – Mrežnik.

    Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, about 2000 new lexical units have entered the German lexicon. These concern a multitude of coinings and word formations (Kuschelkontakt, rumaerosolen, pandemüde) as well as lexical borrowings mainly from English (Lockdown, Hotspot, Superspreader). In a special way, these neologisms function as keywords and lexical indicators sketching the development of the multifaceted corona discourse in Germany. They can be detected systematically by corpus-linguistic investigations of reports and debates in contemporary public communication. Keyword analyses not only exhibit new vocabulary, they also reveal discursive foci, patterns of argumentation and topicalisations within the diverse narratives of the discourse. With the help of quickly established and dominant neologisms, this paper will outline typical contexts and thematic references, but it will also identify speakers' attitudes and evaluations.

    Ungefähr 5,8 Mio. Menschen in der Welt sprechen heute die dänische Sprache - die meisten davon in Dänemark. Dänisch hat seine Wurzeln im Germanischen und begann sich zwischen den Jahren 800 und 1000 aus dem Urnordischen als selbständige Sprache zu entwickeln. Noch heute weist Dänisch viele gemeinsame Züge mit dem Norwegischen und Schwedischen auf. Besonders für Deutsche sollte die dänische Schriftsprache eigentlich leicht verständlich sein. Durch die vielen politischen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Kontakte zwischen den beiden Nachbarländern, vermittelt z.B. durch die Hanse im Ostseeraum, haben sich viele deutsche, insbesondere niederdeutsche Wörter und Redewendungen in der dänischen Sprache eingebürgert, und man kann noch heute dänische Sätze bilden, in denen alle inhaltstragende Wörter aus dem Deutschen entliehen sind. Im Folgenden wird eine Untersuchung des aktuellen Wortschatzes anhand eines dänischen Wörterbuchs aufgezeigt. Anschließend wird ein Blick auf das offizielle nationale dänische Sprachinstitut geworfen und deren empirische Grundlagen der offiziellen Rechtschreibung genauer geschildert.

    In meinem Artikel behandele ich den Umfang des Deutschunterrichtes an Schulen und Universitäten sowie die Verwendung des Deutschen in Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft in Finnland, vor allem im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert. Zunächst aber will ich die Geschichte der deutschen Kontakte und die Rolle der deutschen Sprache in bestimmten finnischen Städten sowie den Anteil Deutschsprachiger in der modernen finnischen Gesellschaft beleuchten. Nicht behandelt werden kann in diesem Zusammenhang die Lektüre und Übersetzung deutscher Belletristik, obwohl beide bedeutenden Einfluss auf die finnische Gedankenwelt und die literarische Bildung gehabt haben.

    The present paper examines the rise and fall of Modern High German loanwords in English from 1600 until 2000, principally making use of the record of borrowing documented by the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) in its Third Edition (online version, in revision 2000-). Groups of loanwords are analysed by century, with reference to the changing social and cultural landscape characterising relationships between the relevant nations over this period. This is not a simple picture: each language grows over the period in different ways, and the speakers of English look to German at different times for different types of borrowing, as the political and intellectual balance alters.
