    Main description: In dieser rein linguistisch orientierten Arbeit wird der Versuch unternommen, die Kausalität als eine linguistische Gesamtkategorie zu erfassen. Ausgehend von einem sprachhandlungstheoretischen Konzept werden die sprachlichen Mittel für die Darstellung kausaler Zusammenhänge in Texten (da, denn, weil, deshalb, -halber, O/, etc.) unter Berücksichtigung ihrer spezifischen Rahmenbedingungen aufgeführt und eingehend beschrieben. Theoretische Schwerpunkte bilden dabei u.a. Fragestellungen zur Kasusgrammatik, zur Behandlung des Symptombezugs (verkehrte Darstellung des Ursache-Wirkungs-Verhältnisses) sowie zum Verhältnis von Kausalität und Temporalität (d.h. des temporal-kausalen Fehlschlusses post hoc, ergo propter hoc)

    Main description: In this purely linguistic study, the attempt is made to establish causality as an integral linguistic category. Proceeding from a conception based on linguistic action theory, the linguistic means available (in German) for expressing causal connections in texts (da, denn, weil, deshalb, -halber etc.) are listed and exhaustively described with reference to the specific parameters they are limited by. The main theoretical emphasis is on questions of case grammar, the treatment of symptom relations (inverted presentation of cause-effect relations) and the relation between causality and temporality (i.e. the temporal-causal fallacy post hoc, ergo propter hoc)

    This book examines the role of syntax in theories of sentence comprehension, and argues for a distinct processing component which is devoted to the recovery of syntactic structure and which utilizes the contrasting types of information found within a Government-Binding grammar. Paul Gorrell contrasts the primary relations (dominance and precedence) and secondary relations (case assignment, theta-role assignment, etc.) in a phrase-structure tree, and shows how this computational distinction of information types is reflected in the internal structure of the parser, which consists of two sub-components: a structure builder (responsible for creating nodes in a tree and positing primary relations between them), and a structure interpreter (responsible for analysing the tree in terms of secondary relations). This model can also predict garden-path phenomena in the processing of verb-final clauses.
