"During his forty-two years as president of AMS Press, Gabriel Hornstein quietly sponsored and stimulated the revival of "long" eighteenth-century studies. Whether by reanimating long-running research publications; by creating scholarly journals; or by converting daring ideas into lauded books, "Gabe" initiated a golden age of Enlightenment scholarship. This understated publishing magnate created a global audience for a research specialty that many scholars dismissed as antiquarianism. Paper, Ink, and Achievement finds in the career of this impresario a vantage point on the modern study of the Enlightenment. An introduction discusses Hornstein's life and achievements, revealing the breadth of his influence on our understanding of the early days of modernity. Three sets of essays open perspectives on the business of long-eighteenth-century studies: on the role of publishers, printers, and bibliophiles in manufacturing cultural legacies; on authors whose standing has been made or eclipsed by the book culture; and on literary modes that have defined, delimited, or directed Enlightenment studies"--

Klappentext: "Oriental Networks explores forms of interconnectedness between Western and Eastern hemispheres during the long eighteenth century, a period of improving transportation technology, expansion of intercultural contacts, and the emergence of a global economy. In eight case studies and a substantial introduction, the volume examines relationships between individuals and institutions, precursors to modern networks that engaged in forms of intercultural exchange. Addressing the exchange of cultural commodities (plants, animals, and artifacts), cultural practices and ideas, the roles of ambassadors and interlopers, and the literary and artistic representation of networks, networkers, and networking, contributors discuss the effects on people previously separated by vast geographical and cultural distance. Rather than idealizing networks as inherently superior to other forms of organization, Oriental Networks also considers Enlightenment expressions of resistance to networking that inform modern skepticism toward the concept of the global network and its politics. In doing so the volume contributes to the increasingly global understanding of culture and communication. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press"--

The racialization of belonging in Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments -- Dugald Stewart and the colour of progress -- The role of 'home' in Edgeworth and Graham's critiques of slavery -- Colonial knowledge and the making of white masculinity in Bombay - "A hothouse of weeds" : reproducing white womanhood in colonial India -- Conclusion. "Examining the discourse of 'home' and 'exile' in Enlightenment thought, this book explores its role in British imperial expansion during the 'long' 18th century. European imperial expansion radically increased population mobility through new trade routes, war, disease and labour, and by the 18th century millions of people were on the move. This book argues that this mass movement led to intellectual ideas and questions about what it meant to belong, and played a major role in the construction of racial difference in empire. Unhomely Empire maps the consolidation of an elite discourse of 'home' and 'exile' through three inter-related case studies and debates; slavery and abolition in the Caribbean, Scottish highland emigration to North America, and raising white girls in colonial India. Playing out over poetry, political pamphlets, travel writing, philosophy, letters and diaries, these debates offer a unique insight into the movement of ideas across a British-imperial literary network. Using this rich cultural material, Gust argues that these intellectual ideas in the long 18th century played a key role in determining who could belong to nation, civilization and humanity"--

Making Time Different: Historical Change and the Laws of Nature -- Living the Future: Ideas of Progress and Uncanny Temporality -- “The Explosion of Light”: The Economic Order and the Scientific Revelation of the Future -- Generating Time: Buffon and the Biological Instruments of Futurity -- The Time of Regeneration: Renewal, Rupture, and Beginning Anew in the French Revolution. "In this manuscript, the author demonstrates how a new idea of the future came into being in eighteenth-century France with the development of modern biological, economic, and social engineering. With the emergence of these practices, the future transformed from something that was largely believed to be predetermined and beyond significant human intervention into something that could be significantly affected through actions in the present. Focusing on the second-half of the century, The author argues that specific mechanisms for constructing the future first arose through the development of practices and instruments aimed at countering degeneration. In their attempts to regenerate a healthy natural state, Enlightenment philosophes created the means to exceed previously recognized limits and create a future that was not merely a recuperation of the past, but was fundamentally different from it. The new active orientation to the future that emerged from these practices was not something that was explicitly articulated during the Enlightenment. Instead this practical orientation must be seen as an implicit understanding of historical temporality. Historical actors often had a tacit knowledge of time--one that they worked with--without necessarily being fully aware of it or articulating it explicitly in their writing. The full articulation of the new idea of the future did not occur until the French Revolution, but the practical understanding of it that developed during the Enlightenment played an important role in making possible the French revolutionaries’ unprecedented attempts to remake the world completely anew."--

"This book is the result of a research process of long durée. Entirely original material rubs shoulders with other work that has already seen the light of day in the form of previous versions of articles and chapters in books, normally in languages other than English. Some of the earlier material formed part of a wider research project that was completed in 2017 and for which the author was awarded a Ph.D. in History by the Complutense University of Madrid. However, there were many other incentives for writing the book and it has benefitted from finding numerous allies along the way. It has also had the enormous good fortune to come to fruition in an eminently international framework, under various research projects"--

Introduction: Ubi? Unde? Quo? -- Theories -- Mythologies -- Genealogies : people of the book -- American religious utopianism -- Goethe's holy family -- Imagined communities : Goethe's Auswanderungsgesellschaft -- Conclusion: Makarie's "cosmos". "[E]xplores 19th-century religious communalism in America including the Shaker, Oneidan, and Rappite societies, arguing the importance of this early American "utopianism" in the development of a uniquely heterogenous democracy. Although no Hawthornes or Goethes, Tolstoys or Marxes emerged from the ranks of these communities, the aforementioned writers are only a few influential individuals who took an intense interest in them as potential models for large-scale societies. Recent social thinkers like Benedict Anderson, Charles Taylor and Robert Wuthnow emphasize the significance of discourses (familial, dynastic, religious) in the creation of community. They contend that literary analysis in particular is critical for understanding how "social imaginaries" develop, sustain themselves, and transform. Among a variety of influential thinkers including Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Richard Dawkins, Goethe is a major contributor to the discussion, not simply because of his profound international influence during the period, but because he was a contemporary witness to these events, and, in his later life, was consumed by everything American in what Fritz Strich describes as the "stupendous study Goethe made of the new world, its geological, climatic, social, economic and political conditions." Goethe's final novel Wilhelm Meister's Journeyman Years depicts an emigrant society about to found an intentional community in America and his view of cultural metamorphosis is central to understanding social development of the period. Utilizing a theoretical framework that draws on Lacan, the Frankfurt School, and post-structuralist Marxist thinkers like Fredric Jameson, Slavoc Zizek, Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, to show how communities develop within specific discursive structures and how these uniquely American structures have the potential to create more radical democracies"--
