    Building a National Literature boldly takes issue with traditional literary criticism for its failure to explain how literature as a body is created and shaped by institutional forces. Peter Uwe Hohendahl approaches literary history by focusing on the material and ideological structures that determine the canonical status of writers and works. He examines important elements in the making of a national literature, including the political and literary public sphere, the theory and practice of literary criticism, and the emergence of academic criticism as literary history. Hohendahl considers such key aspects of the process in Germany as the rise of liberalism and nationalism, the delineation of the borders of German literature, the idea of its history, the understanding of its cultural function, and the notion of a canon of major and minor authors

    Dieser Band enthält die bei der Tübinger Poetik-Dozentur 2015 gehaltenen Vorlesungen von Kathrin Passig und Clemens Setz und gibt einen Einblick in die Werkstatt des österreichischen Dichters und der deutschen „Sachbuchautorin und Sachenausdenkerin“. Die Vorlesungen handeln davon, wie Literatur und Texte entstehen, vom Sammeln und Zusammensetzen des Materials. Kathrin Passig beschreibt in ihrer ersten Vorlesung Schreibende Staatsquallen, wie neue Formen der Zusammenarbeit von verschiedenen Autoren an Texten durch digitale und online tools möglich gemacht werden. Es entsteht so eine neue Form des kollektiven Schreibens, bei dem es nicht mehr entscheidend ist, welcher Autor diesen oder jenen Teil beigesteuert hat. Clemens Setz beschäftigt sich in seinen Vorlesungen mit der Bedeutung des Materials für das literarische Schreiben und der Funktion und Überlieferung von Literatur. Die Zukunft, so wird beim Lesen von Clemens Setz‘ erster Poetikvorlesung Strahlenkatzen und Literatur deutlich, ist so grundsätzlich unverfügbar, wie kaum etwas anderes in unserer durchtechnisierten, durchdachten und durchleuchteten Welt. Literatur funktioniert dabei wie eine kleine Zeitkapsel, die sich selbständig macht und durch eine raumzeitliche Passage in die Zukunft gleitet.

    "Medieval manuscripts resisted obsolescence. Made by highly specialised craftspeople (scribes, illuminators, book binders) with labour-intensive processes using exclusive and sometimes exotic materials (parchment made from dozens or hundreds of skins, inks and paints made from prized minerals, animals and plants), books were expensive and built to last. They usually outlived their owners. Rather than discard them when they were superseded, book owners found ways to update, amend and upcycle books or book parts. These activities accelerated in the fifteenth century. Most manuscripts made before 1390 were bespoke and made for a particular client, but those made after 1390 (especially books of hours) were increasingly made for an open market, in which the producer was not in direct contact with the buyer. Increased efficiency led to more generic products, which owners were motivated to personalise. It also led to more blank parchment in the book, for example, the backs of inserted miniatures and the blanks ends of textual components. Book buyers of the late fourteenth and throughout the fifteenth century still held onto the old connotations of manuscripts—that they were custom-made luxury items—even when the production had become impersonal. Owners consequently purchased books made for an open market and then personalised them, filling in the blank spaces, and even adding more components later. This would give them an affordable product, but one that still smacked of luxury and met their individual needs. They kept older books in circulation by amending them, attached items to generic books to make them more relevant and valuable, and added new prayers with escalating indulgences as the culture of salvation shifted. Rudy considers ways in which book owners adjusted the contents of their books from the simplest (add a marginal note, sew in a curtain) to the most complex (take the book apart, embellish the components with painted decoration, add more quires of parchment). By making sometimes extreme adjustments, book owners kept their books fashionable and emotionally relevant. This study explores the intersection of codicology and human desire. Rudy shows how increased modularisation of book making led to more standardisation but also to more opportunities for personalisation.     In Die Rifāīya Boris Liebrenz explores the book culture of Ottoman Syria (16th to 19th century), using the only surviving Damascene private library of the time as a vantage point. He asks about the production and transmission of knowledge as well as the social background of the reading audience in a manuscript age. Scholarship on Arabic libraries has often focussed on the medieval period and relied nearly exclusively on literary accounts. This is the first book-length study that focuses on a single region in the Ottoman period and systematically uses the vast number of surviving manuscripts as a documentary source by means of the notes left by their readers and possessors.     Dieser Band enthält die bei der Tübinger Poetik-Dozentur 2015 gehaltenen Vorlesungen von Kathrin Passig und Clemens Setz und gibt einen Einblick in die Werkstatt des österreichischen Dichters und der deutschen „Sachbuchautorin und Sachenausdenkerin“. Die Vorlesungen handeln davon, wie Literatur und Texte entstehen, vom Sammeln und Zusammensetzen des Materials. Kathrin Passig beschreibt in ihrer ersten Vorlesung Schreibende Staatsquallen, wie neue Formen der Zusammenarbeit von verschiedenen Autoren an Texten durch digitale und online tools möglich gemacht werden. Es entsteht so eine neue Form des kollektiven Schreibens, bei dem es nicht mehr entscheidend ist, welcher Autor diesen oder jenen Teil beigesteuert hat. Clemens Setz beschäftigt sich in seinen Vorlesungen mit der Bedeutung des Materials für das literarische Schreiben und der Funktion und Überlieferung von Literatur. Die Zukunft, so wird beim Lesen von Clemens Setz‘ erster Poetikvorlesung Strahlenkatzen und Literatur deutlich, ist so grundsätzlich unverfügbar, wie kaum etwas anderes in unserer durchtechnisierten, durchdachten und durchleuchteten Welt. Literatur funktioniert dabei wie eine kleine Zeitkapsel, die sich selbständig macht und durch eine raumzeitliche Passage in die Zukunft gleitet.

    "Printed novels, guides to daily life, and practical medical texts were relatively new in sixteenth-century China, but they quickly became popular and influential. Novel Medicine shows how fiction shaped and was shaped by medical discourse and how it popularized practical, vernacular kinds of knowledge. A vibrant exchange among literary, commercial, and medical spheres resulted in a web of texts that produced distinct genealogies of romantic and sexual disease, iconographic lineages of heroic doctors, and medicalized attitudes toward reading. Novel Medicine interrogates how fiction incorporated, created, and disseminated medical knowledge. Conversely, it demonstrates how practical medical texts employed literary devices and figurative strategies to propagate information. Employing interdisciplinary strategies, it examines the dynamic interplay between discourses of fiction and medicine as well as their representations of illnesses and healers. Critical readings of fictional and medical texts, as well as sources such as fiction commentary, criticism, medical manuscripts, newspapers, essays, print images, and biographies inform an understanding of the body in early modern China. These readings also provide a counterpoint to prevailing narratives that focus on the 'literati' aspects of the novel, showing that these texts were not merely read, but were used by a wide variety of readers and for a range of purposes. This inquiry into the intersections of kinds and sources of knowledge--fictional and real, elite and vernacular--illuminates the history of reading and daily life and challenges us to rethink the nature of Chinese literature"--Provided by publisher

    "In the last two decades, digital technologies have made it possible for anyone with a computer and an Internet connection to rapidly and inexpensively self-publish a book. Once a stigmatized niche activity, self-publishing has grown explosively. Hobbyists and professionals alike have produced millions of books, circulating them through e-readers and the web. What does this new flood of books mean for publishing, authors, and readers? Some lament the rise of self-publishing because it tramples the gates and gatekeepers who once reserved publication for those who met professional standards. Others tout authors' new freedom from the narrow-minded exclusivity of traditional publishing. Critics mourn the death of the author; fans celebrate the democratization of authorship. Drawing on eight years of research and interviews with more than eighty self-published writers, Mass Authorship avoids the polemics, instead showing how writers are actually thinking about and dealing with this brave new world. Timothy Laquintano compares the experiences of self-publishing authors in three distinct genres--poker strategy guides, memoirs, and romance novels--as well as those of writers whose self-published works hit major bestseller lists. He finds that the significance of self-publishing and the challenge it presents to traditional publishing depend on the aims of authors, the desires of their readers, the affordances of their platforms, and the business plans of the companies that provide those platforms. In drawing a nuanced portrait of self-publishing authors today, Laquintano answers some of the most pressing questions about what it means to publish in the twenty-first century: How do writers establish credibility in an environment with no editors to judge quality? How do authors police their copyrights online without recourse to the law? How do they experience Amazon as a publishing platform? And how do they find an audience when, it sometimes seems, there are more writers than readers?"--

Peter Uwe Hohendahl approaches literary history by focusing on the material and ideological structures that determine the canonical status of writers and works. He examines important elements in the making of a national literature, including the political and literary public sphere, the theory and practice of literary criticism, and the emergence of academic criticism as literary history. Cet ouvrage cartographie d?abord le temps des créations de bibliothèques dans les aires germanique, française, italienne, espagnole et ibéro-américaine au cours d?un large XVIIe siècle. Dépassant une approche statique, on y interroge tout autant les circonstances de l?acquisition et de la circulation des livres réunis en collections, que celles de leur dissolution.     Building a National Literature boldly takes issue with traditional literary criticism for its failure to explain how literature as a body is created and shaped by institutional forces. Peter Uwe Hohendahl approaches literary history by focusing on the material and ideological structures that determine the canonical status of writers and works. He examines important elements in the making of a national literature, including the political and literary public sphere, the theory and practice of literary criticism, and the emergence of academic criticism as literary history. Hohendahl considers such key aspects of the process in Germany as the rise of liberalism and nationalism, the delineation of the borders of German literature, the idea of its history, the understanding of its cultural function, and the notion of a canon of major and minor authors.
