    Jakob Gehlen untersucht Goethes nachitalienisches Schreibprojekt, das sich erstmals explizit in eine Gattungstradition stellt. Es ist dabei nicht mehr auf Übertragung (translatio) oder wetteifernde Nachahmung (aemulatio) angelegt, vielmehr nimmt es selbstbewusst, spielerisch und souverän den grenzenlosen Text-Fundus Rom für sich ein. Diese captio ist in ihrer Imperialität römisch: Sie greift gezielt Fremdes als Eigenes auf und ist zugleich unendlich integrativ. Die Römischen Elegien sind kein Beispiel für die Monumentalisierung der Antike, sondern für lebendige Metamorphose. Im erneuernden Verfügen über antike und moderne Textschichten, in der renovatio Roms, liegt dabei auch ein Gründungsmoment der weltweiten Autorität Goethes.

    Die Arbeit diskutiert Goethes Gedichtzyklen 'Römische Elegien' und 'Venezianische Epigramme' im Kontext ihrer Entstehung und Publikation. Dabei fragt sie vor allem danach, wie diese beiden Textcorpora die Stabilisierung der Autorposition Goethes auf dem literarischen Feld zwischen dem Italienaufenthalt und der fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit mit Schiller begleiten. Während die bisherige Goethe- und Klassikforschung diese Jahre eher randständig behandelt hat, werden sie hier als wichtige Scharnierstelle zwischen einer Ästhetik der Überbietung und der Klassik in ihrer kanonisierten Form sichtbar, weil in ihrem Verlauf die Grundmuster einer umfassenden Schreibstrategie formuliert und etabliert werden, die bis zur Moderne die Funktionsweisen des literarischen Feldes prägen. Mithin wird die Klassik nicht nur als literaturgeschichtliche Epoche verstanden, sondern als eine Dynamisierung der literarischen Kommunikation, die seither selbstreferenziell und relativ autonom funktioniert.

    The whole of 24 poems belonging to the cycle of "Roman Elegies" may be seen as an attempt by Goethe to recover and reintegrate sexuality as a natural human function, a project authorized and shielded by the amatory elegy genre but opposed to the morality of his contemporaries. His aim was also to promote a public acceptance for his new way of living, which was commonly considered as immoral and consisted in the , illicit relationship with Christiane Vulpius. The original cycle gives more explicit clues about the intentions and ideas of Goethe than the 20 elegies which he published in 1795, but the censured version still permitted a change in the public opinion of Goethe. Pode-se entender o conjunto cornpleto de 24 poemas pertencentes ao ciclo das "Elegias Romanas" como uma tentativa de Goethe de conseguir uma reabilitaçãodo sexual, legitimada pelo gênero da poesia amorosa romana. Ao mesmo ternpo esse projeto poético serve para obter a aceitacão pública à sua nova forma de vida, o matrimônio não legalizado com Christiane Vulpius, considerado imoral pela maioria das pessoas em Weimar. O ciclo original de 24 poemas mostra mais claramentc as intencões e o pensamento do autor que as 20 elegias que ele publicou depois, mas até essa versão censurada permitiu a transformacão da imagem pública do poeta.

    The whole of 24 poems belonging to the cycle of "Roman Elegies" may be seen as an attempt by Goethe to recover and reintegrate sexuality as a natural human function, a project authorized and shielded by the amatory elegy genre but opposed to the morality of his contemporaries. His aim was also to promote a public acceptance for his new way of living, which was commonly considered as immoral and consisted in the , illicit relationship with Christiane Vulpius. The original cycle gives more explicit clues about the intentions and ideas of Goethe than the 20 elegies which he published in 1795, but the censured version still permitted a change in the public opinion of Goethe. Pode-se entender o conjunto cornpleto de 24 poemas pertencentes ao ciclo das "Elegias Romanas" como uma tentativa de Goethe de conseguir uma reabilitaçãodo sexual, legitimada pelo gênero da poesia amorosa romana. Ao mesmo ternpo esse projeto poético serve para obter a aceitacão pública à sua nova forma de vida, o matrimônio não legalizado com Christiane Vulpius, considerado imoral pela maioria das pessoas em Weimar. O ciclo original de 24 poemas mostra mais claramentc as intencões e o pensamento do autor que as 20 elegias que ele publicou depois, mas até essa versão censurada permitiu a transformacão da imagem pública do poeta.

    Die Arbeit diskutiert Goethes Gedichtzyklen 'Römische Elegien' und 'Venezianische Epigramme' im Kontext ihrer Entstehung und Publikation. Dabei fragt sie vor allem danach, wie diese beiden Textcorpora die Stabilisierung der Autorposition Goethes auf dem literarischen Feld zwischen dem Italienaufenthalt und der fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit mit Schiller begleiten. Während die bisherige Goethe- und Klassikforschung diese Jahre eher randständig behandelt hat, werden sie hier als wichtige Scharnierstelle zwischen einer Ästhetik der Überbietung und der Klassik in ihrer kanonisierten Form sichtbar, weil in ihrem Verlauf die Grundmuster einer umfassenden Schreibstrategie formuliert und etabliert werden, die bis zur Moderne die Funktionsweisen des literarischen Feldes prägen. Mithin wird die Klassik nicht nur als literaturgeschichtliche Epoche verstanden, sondern als eine Dynamisierung der literarischen Kommunikation, die seither selbstreferenziell und relativ autonom funktioniert.
