    The topic of this paper is to analyse the relation between dicta and translation. I will therefore discuss the origin and the main aspects of the German expression "geflügelte Worte". Afterwards I will present Portuguese translations of some quotations of Goethe's Faust in order to illustrate their structural and semantic complexity and therefore the special challenge for translation. At the end I will show that those quotations are a frequent rhetorical means of newspapers and advertising and briefly comment possibilities of translation. Neste trabalho pretendo analisar a relação entre frases célebres e a tradução. Inicialmente discutirei a origem e as particularidades do termo "Geflügelte Worte" em alemão. A seguir apresentarei traduções para o português de frases célebres muito conhecidas do Fausto de Goethe, a fim de ilustrar a complexidade estrutural e semântica das mesmas e, conseqüentemente, o especial desafio que elas representam para a tradução. Ao final, mostrarei que frases célebres alteradas são um recurso estilístico freqüente da linguagem jornalística e publicitária e tecerei alguns breves comentários sobre como lidar com este fenômeno na tradução.

    In this paper we analyse historical and semantic aspects of the terms "doutor" (Portuguese) – "Doktor" (German), which have quite different values in both cultures. We present the development of the term "doutor" from its Latin origin to the present use in Portuguese, considering it as a polite form of address, among others. We contrast this form of address as regards special professionals in Brazil with the situation in Germany, in reference to the legislation and the jurisprudence in both countries. The specific usage of the address with the title of doctor in both cultures, especially in the legal domain, is illustrated with examples. We conclude commenting on the relevance of this topic for translation studies and translation practice. ; Neste trabalho são abordados aspectos históricos e semânticos dos termos "doutor" (port.) – "Doktor" (alem.), que apresentam matizes bastante diferenciados nas duas culturas respectivas. Primeiramente é considerado o desenvolvimento do termo "doutor", desde suas origens latinas até o seu uso hodierno em português, em que o termo passa a ser utilizado também como forma respeitosa de tratamento. O uso dessa forma de tratamento para certas categorias profissionais no Brasil é, então, contrastado com a situação vigente na Alemanha, levando-se em conta a legislação e a jurisprudência em ambos os países. As particularidades do tratamento de doutor em cada uma das duas culturas, sobretudo na área do direito, são ilustradas com exemplos. Ao final, são tecidos breves comentários sobre a relevância teórica e prática do assunto para a tradução. ; In diesem Aufsatz werden geschichtliche und semantische Aspekte der Begriffe "doutor" (port.) – "Doktor" (deut.) untersucht, die in den beiden Kulturen unterschiedliche Ausprägungen aufweisen. Zunächst wird die Entwicklung des Begriffs "doutor" von seinem lateinischen Ursprung bis hin zum heutigen Gebrauch im Portugiesischen besprochen, unter anderem als eine Form der höflichen Anrede.     The topic of this paper is to analyse the relation between dicta and translation. I will therefore discuss the origin and the main aspects of the German expression "geflügelte Worte". Afterwards I will present Portuguese translations of some quotations of Goethe's Faust in order to illustrate their structural and semantic complexity and therefore the special challenge for translation. At the end I will show that those quotations are a frequent rhetorical means of newspapers and advertising and briefly comment possibilities of translation. Neste trabalho pretendo analisar a relação entre frases célebres e a tradução. Inicialmente discutirei a origem e as particularidades do termo "Geflügelte Worte" em alemão. A seguir apresentarei traduções para o português de frases célebres muito conhecidas do Fausto de Goethe, a fim de ilustrar a complexidade estrutural e semântica das mesmas e, conseqüentemente, o especial desafio que elas representam para a tradução. Ao final, mostrarei que frases célebres alteradas são um recurso estilístico freqüente da linguagem jornalística e publicitária e tecerei alguns breves comentários sobre como lidar com este fenômeno na tradução.

    In this paper we analyse historical and semantic aspects of the terms "doutor" (Portuguese) – "Doktor" (German), which have quite different values in both cultures. We present the development of the term "doutor" from its Latin origin to the present use in Portuguese, considering it as a polite form of address, among others. We contrast this form of address as regards special professionals in Brazil with the situation in Germany, in reference to the legislation and the jurisprudence in both countries. The specific usage of the address with the title of doctor in both cultures, especially in the legal domain, is illustrated with examples. We conclude commenting on the relevance of this topic for translation studies and translation practice. Neste trabalho são abordados aspectos históricos e semânticos dos termos "doutor" (port.) – "Doktor" (alem.), que apresentam matizes bastante diferenciados nas duas culturas respectivas. Primeiramente é considerado o desenvolvimento do termo "doutor", desde suas origens latinas até o seu uso hodierno em português, em que o termo passa a ser utilizado também como forma respeitosa de tratamento. O uso dessa forma de tratamento para certas categorias profissionais no Brasil é, então, contrastado com a situação vigente na Alemanha, levando-se em conta a legislação e a jurisprudência em ambos os países. As particularidades do tratamento de doutor em cada uma das duas culturas, sobretudo na área do direito, são ilustradas com exemplos. Ao final, são tecidos breves comentários sobre a relevância teórica e prática do assunto para a tradução. In diesem Aufsatz werden geschichtliche und semantische Aspekte der Begriffe "doutor" (port.) – "Doktor" (deut.) untersucht, die in den beiden Kulturen unterschiedliche Ausprägungen aufweisen. Zunächst wird die Entwicklung des Begriffs "doutor" von seinem lateinischen Ursprung bis hin zum heutigen Gebrauch im Portugiesischen besprochen, unter anderem als eine Form der höflichen Anrede. Der Gebrauch dieser Anredeform für bestimmte Berufsgruppen in Brasilien wird anschließend der Situation in Deutschland gegenübergestellt, wobei insbesondere auf die Gesetzgebung und Rechtsprechung in beiden Ländern eingegangen wird. Die Besonderheiten der Anrede mit dem Doktortitel in beiden Kulturkreisen, insbesondere im juristischen Bereich, werden mit Beispielen illustriert. Zum Schluss werden einige Kommentare zur übersetzungswissenschaftlichen und -praktischen Relevanz dieses Themas dargestellt.
