    We present first results of an ongoing research project on sentiment annotation of historical plays by German playwright G. E. Lessing (1729-1781). For a subset of speeches from six of his most famous plays, we gathered sentiment annotations by two independent annotators for each play. The annotators were nine students from a Master’s program of German Literature. Overall, we gathered annotations for 1,183 speeches. We report sentiment distributions and agreement metrics and put the results in the context of current research. A preliminary version of the annotated corpus of speeches is publicly available online and can be used for further investigations, evaluations and computational sentiment analysis approaches.

    We present the results of a comparative evaluation study of five annotation tools with 50 participants in the context of sentiment and emotion annotation of literary texts. Ten participants per tool annotated 50 speeches of the play Emilia Galotti by G. E. Lessing. We evaluate the tools via standard usability and user experience questionnaires, by measuring the time needed for the annotation, and via semi-structured interviews. Based on the results we formulate a recommendation. In addition, we discuss and compare the usability metrics and methods to develop best practices for tool selection in similar contexts. Furthermore, we also highlight the relationship between inter-rater agreement and usability metrics as well as the effect of the chosen tool on annotation behavior.

    We present a first prototype of the tool SentiAnno, which is an annotation tool specifically designed for sentiment and emotion annotation in structured written texts. To design this tool, we employ the user-centered design (UCD) framework and adapt it by focusing on the annotator, thus phrasing our development approach annotator-centered design. In iterative steps, we gather requirements and feedback from annotators as soon as possible in the development process via various usability engineering methods. We propose that this design process is especially beneficial for challenging and subjective annotation tasks like sentiment and emotion annotation of literary texts. We describe our first iterations and present results of the current prototype. We show how we were able to create functionalities facilitating the annotation process by applying this annotator-centered design approach.

The tool computes and visualizes character configurations and speech statistics for different levels of analysis and allows users to compare different collections of plays. We illustrate the usefulness of the tool for literary studies via several use cases.     Sentiment and emotions are important parts of the analysis and interpretation of literary texts, especially of plays. Therefore, the computational method to analyze sentiments and emotions in written text, sentiment analysis, has found its way into computational literary studies. However, recent research in computational literary studies is focused on annotation and the evaluation of different approaches. We present a tool to investigate the possibilities of Distant Reading the sentiments and emotions expressed in the plays of Lessing. Researchers can explore polarity and emotion distributions and progression on concerning structural and character based levels but also character relations. We present various use cases to highlight the visualizations and functionalities of our tool and discuss how Distant Reading of sentiments can add value to research in literary studies.

    We present a case study as part of a work-in-progress project about multimodal sentiment analysis on historic German plays, taking Emilia Galotti by G. E. Lessing as our initial use case. We analyze the textual version and an audio version (audiobook). We focus on ready-to-use sentiment analysis methods: For the textual component, we implement a naive lexicon-based approach and another approach that enhances the lexicon by means of several NLP methods. For the audio analysis, we use the free version of the Vokaturi tool. We compare the results of all approaches and evaluate them against the annotations of a human expert, which serves as a gold standard. For our use case, we can show that audio and text sentiment analysis behave very differently: textual sentiment analysis tends to predict sentiment as rather negative and audio sentiment as rather positive. Compared to the gold standard, the textual sentiment analysis achieves accuracies of 56% while the accuracy for audio sentiment analysis is only 32%. We discuss possible reasons for these mediocre results and give an outlook on further steps we want to pursue in the context of multimodal sentiment analysis on historic plays.

    This paper presents the prototype of a lexicographic resource for spoken German in interaction, which was conceived within the framework of the LeGeDe-project (LeGeDe=Lexik des gesprochenen Deutsch). First of all, it summarizes the theoretical and methodological approaches that were used for the initial planning of the resource. The headword candidates were selected by analyzing corpus-based data. Therefore, the data of two corpora (written and spoken German) were compared with quantitative methods. The information that was gathered on the selected headword candidates can be assigned to two different sections: meanings and functions in interaction. Additionally, two studies on the expectations of future users towards the resource were carried out. The results of these two studies were also taken into account in the development of the prototype. Focusing on the presentation of the resource’s content, the paper shows both the different lexicographical information in selected dictionary entries, and the information offered by the provided hyperlinks and external texts. As a conclusion, it summarizes the most important innovative aspects that were specifically developed for the implementation of such a resource.

    Das Archiv für Gesprochenes Deutsch (AGD, Stift/Schmidt 2014) am Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache ist ein Forschungsdatenzentrum für Korpora des gesprochenen Deutsch. Gegründet als Deutsches Spracharchiv (DSAv) im Jahre 1932 hat es über Eigenprojekte, Kooperationen und Übernahmen von Daten aus abgeschlossenen Forschungsprojekten einen Bestand von bald 100 Variations-, Interview- und Gesprächskorpora aufgebaut, die u. a. dialektalen Sprachgebrauch, mündliche Kommunikationsformen oder die Sprachverwendung bestimmter Sprechertypen oder zu bestimmten Themen dokumentieren. Heute ist dieser Bestand fast vollständig digitalisiert und wird zu einem großen Teil der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft über die Datenbank für Gesprochenes Deutsch (DGD) im Internet zur Nutzung in Forschung und Lehre angeboten.
