    The coronavirus pandemic may be the largest crisis the world has had to face since World War II. It does not come as a surprise that it is also having an impact on language as our primary communication tool. In this short paper, we present three inter-connected resources that are designed to capture and illustrate these effects on a subset of the German language: An RSS corpus of German-language newsfeeds (with freely available untruncated frequency lists), a continuously updated HTML page tracking the diversity of the vocabulary in the RSS corpus and a Shiny web application that enables other researchers and the broader public to explore the corpus in terms of basic frequencies.

    Recent years have seen a growing interest in linguistic phenomena that challenge the received division of labour between lexicon and grammar, and hence often fall through the cracks of traditional dictionaries and grammars. Such phenomena call for novel, pattern-based types of linguistic reference works (see various papers in Herbst 2019). The present paper introduces one such resource: MAP (“Musterbank argumentmarkierender Präpositionen”), a web-based corpus-linguistic patternbank of prepositional argument structure constructions in German. The paper gives an overview of the design and functionality of the MAP-prototype currently developed at the Leibniz-Institute for the German Language in Mannheim. We give a brief account of the data and our analytic workflow, illustrate the descriptions that make up the resource and sketch available options for querying it for specific lexical, semantic and structural properties of the data.

    The landscape of digital lexical resources is often characterized by dedicated local portals and proprietary interfaces as primary access points for scholars and the interested public. In addition, legal and technical restrictions are potential issues that can make it difficult to efficiently query and use these valuable resources. As part of the research data consortium Text+, solutions for the storage and provision of digital language resources are being developed and provided in the context of the unified cross-domain German research data infrastructure NFDI. The specific topic of accessing lexical resources in a diverse and heterogenous landscape with a variety of participating institutions and established technical solutions is met with the development of the federated search and query framework LexFCS. The LexFCS extends the established CLARIN Federated Content Search that already allows accessing spatially distributed text corpora using a common specification of technical interfaces, data formats, and query languages. This paper describes the current state of development of the LexFCS, gives an insight into its technical details, and provides an outlook on its future development.

    Design can be so much more than creating something pleasing to the eye. The right choice of design tools can support the essential functions of a product. In the case of dictionaries, with their overwhelming number of word entries and sometimes confusing internal article structure, good design can create a “guiding thread” through the maze of information, allowing users to orient themselves and not lose sight of their path. This chapter will provide an overview of the essential role played by design in both the form of dictionaries and their usability and will also examine the different traditions that exist in the design of (print and electronic) dictionaries (→Section 6.2.1). The development of dictionary design depends on the intended context in which the dictionary will be used, its potential users, and its data modelling (→Section 6.2.2). Usage studies (→Section 6.3) can help delve deeper into user needs concerning dictionary design. Design practice is dependent on a number of elements that are not unique to dictionaries but also on many dictionary-specific factors, for example whether the dictionary is a retrospective digitalisation project or whether the design takes the content of the dictionary or its intended users as its starting point (→Section 6.4). Search functionality is what provides access to an Internet dictionary, so the design of this functionality also has to be planned carefully (→Section 6.5). Finally,the role of established design guidelines and frameworks will be considered, including how templates are employed and how the lexicographic process should be informed by the interconnected development of content and design (→Section 6.6).
