    In present-day Germany, research on postwar academia, up through the 1960s and beyond, requires no special justification. But from the North American side, the point of this scholarly activity - including the many new editions and a flood of archive-based publications - is much less obvious. For the most well-established figures of the period, the primary international canonizations were already part of the first waves of the reception, the theoretical tectonics established themselves accordingly, and the theories were established as theories - which are in many quarters presumed to be just as reliable today as they were decades ago. One might say that the international and North American reception of European theory has manifested an overall tendency toward sedimentation, while the dynamic of scholarly research about theory, including the archival unearthing of new sources, tends to complicate and undermine the established corpus of "primary texts."

    Structural anthropology remains a hidden influence in Frantz Fanon's theory of the 'sociogenesis' of mental illness. This chapter outlines how Fanon's belief in the therapeutic capacity of 'socialization' critically absorbs Claude Lévi-Strauss's examination of the link between 'madness' and the symbolic structure of society. These innovations, Chamberlin argues, pushed Fanon to institute 'semihospitalization' as a radically dialectical method of treatment in his final role as a clinician at the Neuropsychiatric Day Centre in Tunis (1958–60).

    Given the prospect of post-oil futures, this chapter historically situates contemporary Gulf Futurism within cybernetic and logistical aspirations underlying the current global trend of the smartness mandate. Working through the complex visuality that the cybernetic black box animates, the chapter revisits Fredric Jameson's cognitive mapping as an allegorical model for the inherent frictions of computational capital. To this end, it discusses Kuwaiti artist Monira Al Qadiri's artistic practice that reclaims a right to speculate while condensing material reality and imaginative threads, thereby going beyond a mere gesture of unveiling or mapping.

    Through various cases and instances, this essay opens with the question of biography and the demands of its form: that is, biography's attempt to reduce historical totalities to the page in moments of sudden condensation. It then introduces the figure of Charlotte Wolff (1897–1986), a doctor and later hand reader and sexologist, who appears on a diagram, constructed by Walter Benjamin in 1932, to map his life through his 'Urbekanntschaften' (primal acquaintances). It then seeks to transpose Benjamin's diagram into other linear forms, such as a family tree, a diagram of chemical affinity, and an astral chart, to add one: the diagram as a map of the hand. This opens up a number of temporal, historical, and epistemic reductions, or cases of reduction, in Wolff's work and beyond. It concludes with a particular moment in Wolff's biography - her arrest in 1933 and her escape to Paris - as a final instance of the line, as border.

    What are the different kinds of reduction that take place in a psychotherapeutic discipline? This article looks at the agonistic relations between the two types of reduction that fundamentally constitute a psychotherapeutic paradigm: naming and listening. At any given moment in the history of psychological theory, various schools and theories are in contention with each other over an institutional and state legitimation that will only be granted to one or some of them. It is argued that these disciplinary contentions for a dominant status subordinate the names and concepts that populate a particular psychotherapeutic paradigm to a property regime, thereby obscuring or compromising the attention paid to forms of listening that occur on the edge of naming and meaning.

    In the age of pervasive computing the way our body interacts with reality needs to be reconceptualized. The reduction of embodiment is a problem for computer music since this music relies heavily on different layers of (digital) technology and mediation in order to be produced and performed. The article shows that such a mediation should not be conceived of as an obstacle but rather as a constitutive element of a permanent, complex negotiation between the artist, the machinery, and the audience, aimed at shaping a different temporality for musical language (as the Italian artist Caterina Barbieri develops).

This chapter thus utilizes what I call the trope of the 'vignette' to look at the concept of home in order to identify some aspects of what constitutes and/or (re)creates it for displaced individuals. It does so by performing a close reading of key moments in the film "Salt of this Sea" by Annemarie Jacir and the collection of essays "The Idea of Home" by John Hughes.

    This essay presents some thoughts about lists and draws on a range of material, from Lauren Berlant to George Perec. It acts as an introduction to a series of short meditations on individual instances of listing. Usually presented in a sequence and assembled according to some practical or conceptual necessity, lists offer the promise, perhaps the illusion, of keeping track, of bringing control to the flux of things and thoughts, of putting confusion to a halt. They relate to reduction in two ways: first, as a quantitative reduction - as a form of making smaller or less; and second, as a qualitative reduction - as a form of condensation to the most salient data.

    Usually, fears and phobias range under anxiety disorders, and are listed in psychiatric manuals. Their variety seems infinite, and their severity varies from a slight uneasiness or tension to a condition in which a state of great panic is induced by the specific stimulus, which can be an object, an animal, a number, people, spaces, ideas, or a particular situation. The list of fears by Czech artist Eva Kot'átková is part of the installation "Asylum" that was presented at the Venice Biennale in 2013. Kot'átková's works often reflect on the processes that restrict and manipulate people within institutions such as psychiatric hospitals or schools.

    In the retrospect of almost a decade, the year 2015 seems to offer at least two openings which can help us better understand and localize the "end of theory" narratives that began to take hold sometime around the end of the millennium. Rita Felski's much-discussed and much-maligned 2015 book, "The Limits of Critique", construed the long history of "critique" as largely continuous with the more recent (postwar) idea of "theory," which allowed her to question the presupposed progressivity and utility of the dominant critical-theoretical discourses of late 20th-century North American academia. In the same year, Philipp Felsch's "Der lange Sommer der Theorie" (which was recently published in English as "The Summer of Theory") went so far as to assign specific dates, 1960–1990, and tended to define theory not as a purely academic product, but as a much wider cultural movement. Between the two books, questions of the difference between theory and critique, their specific institutional locus within and beyond academia, became objects of acute concern.

    Das ZfL dürfte die einzige Institution gewesen sein, der er je nähergetreten ist. Als Senior Fellow schätzte er vor allem den Zugang zur Bibliothek des Hauses, wo man ihn häufig im Gespräch fand mit den Bibliothekarinnen oder anderen Besuchern, stets neugierig, mitteilungsfreudig, und meistens heiter. Manche Jüngere haben erst im Laufe der Zeit erfahren, dass der muntere ältere Herr so berühmt war. Ansonsten pflegte er gewissenhaft Abstand zu allem Institutionellen. Die Position des nicht direkt involvierten Beobachters war ihm schon während des Studiums in Frankfurt a.M. und Berlin zur zweiten Natur geworden. Sie befähigte ihn zeitlebens zu oft überraschenden, häufig provozierenden Ansichten, die sich mit Eitelkeit nicht vertrugen. Wolfgang konnte sehr charmant sein, aber er war vollständig uneitel. [...] Als Ein-Mann-Forschungsinstitution hat Wolfgang ein denkbar breites Themenfeld bearbeitet. Es reicht von der Geschichte der Eisenbahnreise (1977) über die Bedeutung der Genussmittel (1980) und die Elektrifizierung der Großstädte (1983) bis zu Analysen über die Kulturpolitik in Berlin in der kurzen Spanne nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs und vor dem Fall des Eisernen Vorhangs (1995), die Kultur der Niederlage (2001) und das Verschwinden des geordneten Rückzugs aus der Geschichte der Kriege (2019). In Technik-, Mentalitäts-, Intellektuellen- oder Militärgeschichte und auch im wohlfeilen Label der 'Kulturgeschichte' geht keines auf - wenngleich die Frage nach Gewinnern und Verlierern der Geschichte eine Konstante im Werk darstellt.

    Neulich nahm ich ein Buch von Sigrid Weigel in die Hand, das 1982 erschienen ist. Normalerweise bleiben alle Buchtitel auf einer Publikationsliste brav in einer chronologischen Reihe, und selbst wenn die Schlange sehr lang ist, was bei Weigel zweifellos der Fall ist, springt keiner von ihnen aus der Reihe und rennt nach vorne, in Richtung Zukunft. Aber es kommt doch vor, dass man, zum Beispiel bei einem Umzug, eines der Frühwerke in die Hand nimmt und darin blättert. Man wird überrascht von schillernden Denkbildern, die von heute sein könnten. Ansätze und Zusammenhänge, die man einer späteren Phase zugeordnet hätte, oder solche, die man jetzt erst begreift, stehen bereits in den älteren Büchern schwarz auf weiß. Gerade im digitalen Zeitalter, in dem die historischen Rahmen verschwimmen, gefällt mir die Unbestechlichkeit des Papiers, das die Zeit nie schleichend verfälscht. In der Forschung gibt es stets Fortschritt, aber wenn ich mir erlaube, Weigels Schriften nicht nur als wissenschaftliche Texte, sondern als Texte in ihrer gattungsfreien Nacktheit zu lesen, gibt es keinen Satz darin, der überholt ist. Die zeitliche Ordnung bleibt, verliert aber ihren hierarchischen Charakter. Wo ich eine alte Erinnerung erwarte, entdecke ich eine neue Möglichkeit, die Gegenwart zu verstehen. So entstand in mir der Wunsch, die jüngere Vergangenheit durch das Fenster der älteren zu betrachten. Ich rede hier nicht von der magischen Glaskugel einer Wahrsagerin, sondern von einer soliden Relektüre.

    Ende 1972, vielleicht war es auch Anfang 1973, lief im Hauptgebäude der Moskauer Lomonossow-Universität eine Voraufführung von Andrej Tarkovskijs Spielfilm "Solaris". Auf einer Forschungsstation über dem riesigen Ozean des Planeten Solaris soll der Psychologe Chris Kelvin dabei helfen, seltsame Vorgänge aufzuklären. Die Wissenschaftler werden dort von menschlichen Wesen 'besucht', die Projektionen ihrer eigenen quälenden Erinnerungen sind. Ohne die Aussicht, das Rätsel des Ozeans je zu lösen und ins Vaterhaus auf der Erde zurückzukehren, bleibt Kelvin schließlich auf der Station. [...] Andrej Tarkovskij (1932–1986) zählt heute zu den großen, weltweit bekannten russischen Filmregisseuren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Unter Cineasten war er 1972 schon längst kein Geheimtipp mehr; "Solaris" war sein dritter abendfüllender Spielfilm. Der Sohn des Dichters Arsenij Tarkovskij hatte bis 1960 am Moskauer Staatlichen Filminstitut in der Regieklasse von Michail Romm studiert. Seine Anfänge als Regisseur fielen in die sogenannten Tauwetter-Jahre, als sich der sowjetische Film von der heroischen Ästhetik der Stalinzeit befreite, individuelle Schicksale stärker in den Blick nahm und in Anlehnung an den Avantgardefilm der 1920er Jahre teils mit subjektiver Kameraführung experimentierte. [...] Das Drehbuch zu "Solaris" schrieb Tarkovskij gemeinsam mit dem Schriftsteller Fridrich Gorenstejn (1932–2002). Später bekannte Tarkovskij, dass ihn Lems eigentliche Science-Fiction-Geschichte über das Aufeinandertreffen von menschlicher Vernunft und einem so unergründlichen kosmischen Phänomen wie dem schweigenden, aber offenbar lebendigen Ozean auf dem Planeten Solaris wenig interessiert habe. Deshalb verschober im Film die Perspektive auf die ethische Dimension jeglichen Handelns des Menschen - sowohl gegenüber seinen Mitmenschen als auch gegenüber der Zukunft der Erde.

Dies soll Anlass sein, auf ein Interview mit ihm hinzuweisen, das 1988 erstmals im Radio ausgestrahlt wurde und seit kurzem wieder zugänglich ist. Geführt wurde das Gespräch von dem Journalisten Harald von Troschke (1924–2009), der für die Aufzeichnung einen Besuch des aus den USA angereisten Hans Jonas' in Heidelberg nutzte.

    Intersektionalität hält als Forschungsgegenstand, als Schauplatz theoretischer Diskussion und als Analyseperspektive seit Jahren verstärkt Einzug in unterschiedliche akademische Disziplinen und Bereiche. Es verwundert daher nicht, dass sich das Intersektionalitätsparadigma auch im Bereich der Literaturwissenschaft und -didaktiken zunehmend als produktiv erweist, wie wir mit dem Sammelband zeigen wollen, der intersektionale literaturwissenschaftliche und -didaktische Fallstudien aus unterschiedlichen Philologien versammelt und so ein Prisma der Erforschung literarischer Repräsentationen des Zusammenspiels von einander verschärfenden bzw. abschwächenden Diskriminierungskategorien bietet. Inwiefern die Einzelbeiträge kritische Reflexionen verschiedener Positionen der Intersektionalitätsforschung präsentieren und Beispiele für die vielfältige Ausgestaltung intersektional orientierter Textanalyse auf theoretischer und methodischer Ebene anbieten sowie didaktische Lesarten des Intersektionalitätsparadigmas aufzeigen, machen wir aufbauend auf einer ausführlichen Begriffs- und Theoriereflexion einleitend deutlich.
