    "Ein Bild sagt mehr als tausend Worte." Mit zahlreichen luziden Beispielen malt Wolfgang Mieder in diesem Kompendium ein beredtes Bild seiner Sprichwortforschungen der vergangenen 20 Jahre. Darin widmet sich der Germanist und Folklorist seinem Thema aus einem sprachkulturellen, literarischen und politischen Blickwinkel und vergleicht sowohl deutsch- als auch englischsprachige Sprichwörter hinsichtlich ihrer Genese und ihres Fortwirkens: Luthers sprichwörtliche Argumentationen werden hier vom Autor ebenso wie das sprichwörtliche Wirken in den Werken Nietzsches und Brechts sowie den Reden Martin Luther Kings und Willy Brandts in den Fokus gerückt. Dieses Buch richtet sich an Sprichwortforscher, Folkloristen und Kulturanthropologen und plädiert nicht zuletzt durch eine spürbare Freude am Sprichwort für eine weitere Beschäftigung mit einem bis dato unausgeschöpften Thema Wolfgang Mieder legt einen interessanten Sammelband vor, der zwölf Beiträge aus zwei Jahrzehnten (1998-2016) präsentiert, schön geordnet in drei thematische Gruppen zu je vier Aufsätzen: Es sind sprachkulturelle, literarische und politische Studien, wie das Vorwort anschaulich erklärt. Die Chronologie der Beiträge spielt keine Rolle, denn die Themen begleiten Wolfgang Mieder schon seit Jahren.     The ten chapters of «Proverbs Speak Louder Than Words» present a composite picture of the richness of proverbs as significant expressions of folk wisdom as is manifest from their appearance in art, culture, folklore, history, literature, and the mass media. The first chapter surveys the multifaceted aspects of paremiology (the study of proverbs), with the second chapter illustrating the paremiological work by the American folklorist Alan Dundes. The next two chapters look at the effective role that proverbs play in the mass media, where they are cited in their traditional wording or as innovative anti-proverbs. The fifth chapter discusses proverbs as expressions of the worldview of New England. This is followed by two chapters on the proverbial prowess of American presidents, to wit the proverbial style in the correspondence between John and Abigail Adams and a discussion of Abraham Lincoln’s apocryphal proverb «Don’t swap horses in the middle of the stream.» The eighth chapter traces the tradition of proverb iconography from medieval woodcuts to Pieter Bruegel the Elder and on to modern caricatures, cartoons, and comic strips. The last two chapters deal with the origin and history of the proverbial expression «to tilt at windmills» as an allusion to Cervantes’ Don Quixote and the many proverbial utterances in Mozart’s letters. The book draws attention to the fact that proverbs as metaphorical signs continue to play an important role in oral and written communication. Proverbs as socalled monumenta humana are omnipresent in all facets of life, and while they are neither sacrosanct nor saccharine, they usually offer much common sense or wisdom based on recurrent experiences and observations.

    This Festschrift in honor of Dennis F. Mahoney’s sixty-fifth birthday is somewhat different from the standard Festschrift: rather than present essays from various authors, this Festschrift collects twenty-one of Mahoney’s most important English-language publications on German Classicism and Romanticism published over the past thirty years. Mahoney is the author and editor of many articles and books in German and English, among them Die Poetisierung der Natur bei Novalis (1980), Der Roman der Goethezeit (1988), The Eighteenth Century and Uses of the Past (1992), The Critical Fortunes of a Romantic Novel: Novalis’s «Heinrich von Ofterdingen» (1994), The End of Enlightenment (2000), Friedrich von Hardenberg (Novalis) (2001), and Literature of German Romanticism (2004). Mahoney has taught German language, culture, literature, and film at the University of Vermont for thirty-five years, and has received national and international recognition. On campus he has been a champion of international education, advising students about studying abroad, setting up an exchange program with the University of Augsburg, and inviting students and colleagues from Germany to Vermont. He has received an Excellence in Teaching Award, an Award for Outstanding Contributions to International Education, and he was the first American to be named president of the International Novalis Society. The title of this Festschrift captures Mahoney’s life-long occupation with this rich period of German cultural, intellectual, and literary life. The essays display his erudition and expertise on such subjects as the multifaceted Age of Goethe, including the continuing discussion of the nature of the Bildungsroman and the influence of the French Revolution. The essays deal primarily with Goethe, Schiller, and Novalis, but Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Georg Forster, Caroline von Wolzogen, Jean Paul, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Achim von Amim, and others are discussed as well. These individual essays are representative of Mahoney’s accomplishments as a literary scholar – and a remarkable professor, colleague, and friend.

    This celebratory volume consists of nineteen previously published essays by Professor David A. Scrase. These English-language essays are divided into three sections: (1) studies on the twentieth-century German author Wilhelm Lehmann; (2) literary studies on Johannes Bobrowski, Ludwig Greve, Stephan Hermlin, and others; and (3) studies on the literature, art, and film of the Holocaust. The book addresses German literature of the twentieth century in particular, with an emphasis on modern poetry and fiction by East and West German authors. Another theme concerns itself with biographical matters of various authors. While there is an emphasis on the poetry and fiction of Wilhelm Lehmann, the third section on the Holocaust also addresses the important factor of teaching about the Holocaust at schools and on the undergraduate level of colleges and universities. In its entirety the book includes an impressive overview of the rich German literary world of the twentieth century while also stressing the necessary study of the Holocaust through literary and artistic expressions. The detailed analysis of numerous poems will be of much use to students, and some of the articles on the Holocaust will be useful to instructors as they prepare courses on the literature, art, and film dealing with various aspects of the Holocaust.

    "The thirteen chapters of this book comprise an intriguing and informative entry into the world of proverb scholarship, illustrating that proverbs have always been and continue to be wisdom's international currency. The first section of the book focuses on the field of paremiology (proverb studies) in general, the spread of Anglo-American proverbs in Europe, and the phenomenon of modern proverbs. The second section analyzes the use of proverbs in the world of politics, including a chapter on President Obama, while the third concentrates on the uses of proverbs in literature. The final section ends with detailed cultural studies of the origin, history, dissemination, use, function, and meaning of specific proverbs.Noted scholar Wolfgang Mieder shows that proverbs matter in culture, literature, and politics. Proverbs remain part and parcel of oral and written communication, and, he demonstrates, they deserve to be studied from a range of viewpoints. While various chapters deal with a variety of issues and approaches, they cohere through a rhetorical perspective that looks at the text, texture, and context of proverbs as speech acts that make a noteworthy impact on culture and society.     Widely considered the world's greatest living proverb scholar and known as the author of, among numerous other books, the Encyclopedia of World Proverbs and the coeditor of A Dictionary of American Proverbs, Wolfgang Mieder has brought particular attention and understanding to the uses of proverbs in politics. In this new collection of eight essays, he considers the role of proverbial speech in the American political scene from the Revolutionary War to the present.Mieder introduces this survey with an examination of what characterizes American proverbs, what are their origins, and how they have spread internationally with the expansion of America's political role. He then turns to the origins and varied historical uses of what has become the defining proverb of American democracy, ""government of the people, by the people, for the people."" The employment of proverbs had no brighter exponent among the nation's founding generation than Abigail Adams, who was not without influence despite the exclusion from political office of women. As they have for so much, her abundant letters provide rich sources for politically charged proverbs.Though it is especially associated with Abraham Lincoln, ""a house divided against itself cannot stand"" is a biblical proverb that has proven of wide value as a political expression. Frederick Douglass's proverbial prowess paralleled that of his contemporary Lincoln, and he employed it effectively in his battle for civil rights. Given proverbs' enduring role in American politics, it is an interesting exercise to compare how United States presidents have employed them in their inaugural addresses, which have produced such gems as John F. Kennedy's ""ask not"" dictum. The bonds Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill formed through the World War II alliance were expressed in the proverbial language that frequently enlivened their correspondence. Having addressed these aspects of the proverb in American politics, Mieder winds up by considering the sociopolitical significance of the ambiguous proverb ""good fences make good neighbors

Darin widmet sich der Germanist und Folklorist seinem Thema aus einem sprachkulturellen, literarischen und politischen Blickwinkel und vergleicht sowohl deutsch- als auch englischsprachige Sprichwörter hinsichtlich ihrer Genese und ihres Fortwirkens: Luthers sprichwörtliche Argumentationen werden hier vom Autor ebenso wie das sprichwörtliche Wirken in den Werken Nietzsches und Brechts sowie den Reden Martin Luther Kings und Willy Brandts in den Fokus gerückt. Dieses Buch richtet sich an Sprichwortforscher, Folkloristen und Kulturanthropologen und plädiert nicht zuletzt durch eine spürbare Freude am Sprichwort für eine weitere Beschäftigung mit einem bis dato unausgeschöpften Thema. Wolfgang Mieder legt einen interessanten Sammelband vor, der zwölf Beiträge aus zwei Jahrzehnten (1998–2016) präsentiert, schön geordnet in drei thematische Gruppen zu je vier Aufsätzen: Es sind sprachkulturelle, literarische und politische Studien, wie das Vorwort anschaulich erklärt. Die Chronologie der Beiträge spielt keine Rolle, denn die Themen begleiten Wolfgang Mieder schon seit Jahren. Sie zeigen sein breites, fächerübergreifendes Wissen als Germanist, Folklorist und auch als Slawist und nicht zuletzt als Anglist. – Paula Küng-Hefti, in: Schweizerisches Archiv für Volkskunde 1/2019, S. 102.
