    Abstract ; The contribution analyses how the late medieval Harðar saga uses place-names as literary devices. It proposes that toponyms are employed not only to locate plot elements, but also for purposes of subversion, the dropping of keywords then taken up by the narrative in an often grotesque and ironic fashion, the creation of an (again, typically ironic) subtext, and the evocation of physical topographies and their visual appearance in the context of accounts of travels. Thus, the contribution argues that place-names are a central part of the storyteller’s toolkit which can provide important pointers for how to read the saga. ; Abstract ; Der Beitrag analysiert, wie die spätmittelalterliche Harðar saga Ortsnamen als literarische Ausdrucksmittel verwendet. Dabei wird vorgeschlagen, dass Toponyme nicht nur herangezogen werden, um die Schauplätze von Elementen der Sagahandlung zu lokalisieren, sondern auch zu Zwecken der Subversion, als insbesondere in ironischer und grotesker Weise verwendete Stichwortgeber für die Entwicklung von einzelnen Episoden der Saga, zur Schaffung eines (erneut typischerweise ironischen) Subtexts, und zur Evozierung des visuellen Erscheinungsbilds der physischen Topographie im Rahmen von Reisebeschreibungen. Damit erweisen sich Ortsnamen als ein zentraler Teil des »Werkzeugkastens« des Erzählers, der für eine Interpretation der Saga wichtige Anhaltspunkte geben kann.

    Other ; Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Garbage, The City, and Death. A Four Act Scandal in Post-war Germany The paper explores the dramaturgy of the scandals around the play Garbage, The City and Death (Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod) by German playwright, theatre and film maker Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Published in 1976, the play immediately caused a scandal in West Germany, because it was accused of reproducing anti-Semitic stereotypes. The presentation sheds light on the different phases of the scandal and their historical and cultural contexts in post-war Germany – starting as a literary scandal in 1976, being transformed into a theatre scandal in the 1980ies and finally being dissolved by the German premiere in 2009. The paper is structured as follows: Act One: The Literary Scandal. Destroying Fassbinder’s Garbage, Act Two: Preventing the Staging of the Play, Act Three: Blocking the Opening Night, Act Four: Performing the Play in Germany. By analysing the dramaturgical structure of this specific scandal, the paper discusses the following hypotheses: 1. Scandals arise through the circulation of decontextualised information in public. This is due to either a lack of information about the actual object or incident being scandalised or a lack of information about the context of the object or incident. This lack is caused by the logic of the scandal itself: Because the play or the performance is prohibited, it has been withdrawn from the public, making it impossible to form a well-founded opinion on the controversy. 2. The scandal is driven forward by an emotionalising rhetoric built around the decontextualised information. 3. Once the gap of information is filled, the scandalising rhetoric turns into a rhetoric of irrelevance: Reviews of the first performance of Garbage, The City and Death in Germany considered the play hardly a matter of public concern.

    Abstract ; Diese Dissertation untersucht das variable Verhalten von sogenannten „bare nouns“ (Nominale ohne Artikel) im Persischen. Dieses Verhalten kann jedoch nicht verstanden werden ohne eine Reihe von entscheidenden Eigenschaften der persischen Satzstruktur zu betrachten. Dazu gehören Informationsstruktur, Prosodie und Wortstellung, sowie die semantischen und syntaktischen Funktionen verschiedener morphologischer Markierungen im Persischen. Die vorliegende Dissertation kann daher zum besseren Verständnis von satzinterner Syntax, Semantik und Prosodie des Persischen beitragen. Ich beginne meine Untersuchung mit dem Vergleich der BNs in verschiedenen Positionen mit Nominalen, die mit verschiedenen Morphemen gekennzeichnet sind. Die quasi-inkorporierten Nominale im Persischen scheinen zur Klasse der diskursintransparenten inkorporierenden Sprachen zu gehören. Doch dies scheint nicht immer zu stimmen, unter bestimmten Umständen zeigen persische BNs Diskurstransparenz. In Kapitel 3 untersuche ich daher, unter welchen Umständen BNs Diskurstransparenz zeigen und warum. In Kapitel 3 präsentiere ich einen Alternativvorschlag zu Farkas & de Swart, in dem ich darlege, dass ein BN tatsächlich einen neuen Diskursreferenten einführt. Aber der Numerus von BNs ist neutral (numerusneutralen Diskursreferenten).In der zweiten Hälfte der Dissertation wird die Interpretation von BNs in verschiedenen Positionen und mit unterschiedlichen grammatischen Funktionen diskutiert. Kapitel 4 konzentriert sich auf BNs in Objektposition. Wir stellen einen direkten Vergleich an zwischen BNs als tatsächliche BNs, d.h. Nominale, die nicht mit einem Morphem markiert sind, und Kontexten, in denen sie mit dem Morphem -ra auftreten. Ich werde argumentieren, dass -ra lediglich markiert, dass ein BN oder auch ein anderes Nominal nicht in seiner VP-internen Position interpretiert, sondern in eine VP-externe Domäne bewegt wird. Das bedeutet, das Morphem -ra ist ein syntaktisches Morphem auf Phrasenebene. ; Abstract ; This thesis explores the variable behavior of bare nouns in Persian. Bare singular nouns realize different grammatical functions, including subject, object and indirect object. They receive different interpretations, including generic, definite and existential readings. However, the task of understanding the reasons for, and limits on, this variation cannot be achieved without understanding a number of pivotal features of Persian sentential architecture, including Information Structure, prosody, word order, and the functions of various morphological markers in Persian. With respect to the discourse transparency of Incorporated Nominals, under certain circumstances, Persian bare nouns show discourse transparency. These circumstances are examined in chapter 3, and it is proposed that bare nouns do introduce a number neutral discourse referent. This proposal is phrased within Discourse Representation Theory. In the second half of the dissertation, the interpretation of bare nouns in different positions and with different grammatical functions are discussed. Under the independently supported hypothesis of position>interpretation mapping developed by Diesing (1992), we will see the role of the suffix -ra in indicating that an object has been moved out of VP. For subjects, there is no morphological marking corresponding to –ra on objects, and we have to rely on prosody and word order to determine how a VP is interpreted using theories of the interaction of accent and syntactic structure. It is proposed that both subject and object originate within the VP, and can move out to the VP-external domain. The motivation for these movements are informational-structural in nature, relating in particular to the distinctions between given and new information, and default and non-default information structure.

    Abstract ; Kognitive Kontrolle wird besonders in solchen Momenten deutlich, wenn eine geplante Handlung gestört wird. Weil zwei widerstreitende Verhaltenstendenzen gleichzeitig bestehen oder anlaufen, entsteht ein Konflikt. Experimentell können kognitive Konflikte beispielsweise mit dem Stroop-Paradigma hergestellt und untersucht werden (Stroop, 1935). Es ist dabei eine aktuelle Frage, wie Konflikte zeitlich verarbeitet werden und wo im Gehirn diese Verarbeitung geschieht. Zeitlich können Konflikte beispielsweise dann entstehen, wenn die Informationen des Stimulus abgerufen werden oder auch erst dann, wenn die intendierte Antwort tatsächlich für die Artikulation ausgewählt werden muss. Eine weiterführende Frage ist, ob sich die entsprechenden Ergebnisse für verschiedene Stroop-Varianten unterscheiden. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden diese Fragen systematisch für die Verarbeitung von Objekten und Zahlen mit zwei Varianten des Stroop-Paradigmas untersucht. In der vorliegenden Dissertation präsentiere ich Ergebnisse von Reaktionszeitstudien und fMRT-Experimenten zum zeitlichen Ablauf und zu neuronalen Substraten kognitiver Konflikte während der Verarbeitung von Objekten und Zahlen. Um die Konflikte zeitlich und räumlich lokalisieren zu können, wird die Abrufphase und die Antwortphase separat modelliert. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die Konflikte eher während des Abrufs als bei der Antwortauswahl stattfinden. Außerdem wird geschlussfolgert, dass die Konflikte für Zahl- und Objektrepräsentationen nicht auf gemeinsamen neuronalen Substraten basieren. Die Ergebnisse meiner Reaktionszeitstudien und der MRT-Studien deuten also darauf hin, dass Konflikte bei der Verarbeitung von Objekten und Zahlen zwar einem ähnlichen zeitlichen Verlauf folgen, aber offenbar in unterschiedlichen neuronalen Netzwerken verarbeitet werden. ; Abstract ; In daily life, we constantly have to adjust our goals and plans to changing task demands and internal needs. Our ability to balance the initiation and inhibition of our actions, and to solve resulting conflicts between them, is referred to as cognitive control. To study the processes of cognitive control, the Stroop Paradigm has become a popular tool (Stroop,1935). The Stroop Paradigm is frequently used to address central questions of cognitive control. It is, for instance, an open issue, where and when in the processing stream cognitive conflicts arise. Do they arise early, for example, during the retrieval of target and distractor? Or do they occur late, when the response is prepared for execution? Another debate is concerned with the question whether the findings agree for different Stroop variants (Van Maanen et al., 2009). In this dissertation I present research on the temporal characteristics and the neural substrates of cognitive conflicts during the processing of objects and numbers. To better understand the locus of the conflict, the retrieval phase and the response phase are modelled separately. The results from several reaction time studies and from two fMRI experiments speak to the issue that processing costs occur during retrieval, i.e., early in the processing stream, for both, object and number representations. The results further indicate that the processing of the conflict between target and distractor for number and object representations do not rely on common neural substrates. I will thus present the results from behavioural and functional imaging experiments, showing similar temporal patterns for the conflicts in both systems, but distinct underlying neural networks.

    Abstract ; Die Alternativensemantik nach (Rooth, 1985, 1992) geht davon aus, dass sprachlicher Fokus eine Menge von Alternativen evoziert und Fokuspartikeln auf diese Menge Bezug nehmen. Die vorliegende Dissertation untersucht den Ein uss von Fokuspartikeln und prosodischem Fokus auf die mentale Repräsentation von Alternativenmengen. Im Speziellen wurden die sprachlichen und kognitiven Mechanismen, die am Aufbau einer Alternativenmenge beteiligt sind, mittels psycholinguistischer Experimente getestet. Experiment 1a und 1b untersuchen späte Repräsentation der gesamten Alternativenmenge. Die Experimente zeigen, dass Fokuspartikeln zu einer reicheren Enkodierung der Alternativenmenge führen, was sich in einem verbesserten Gedächtnisabruf äußert. Experiment 2 und 3 untersuchen die Prozesse, die am Aufbau von Alternativenmengen beteiligt sind. In Experiment 2 (Probe Recognition) führten Fokuspartikeln zu Interferenzeffekten beim Erkennen von erwähnten Alternativen sowie bei der Ablehnung nicht-erwähnter Alternativen. Eine weitere Analyse und Experiment 4 untersuchen die Mitglieder der Alternativenmenge. Die Daten deuten darauf hin, dass die Alternativenmenge aus sämtlichen möglichen Ersetzungen des fokussierten Elements inklusive unrelatierter Elemente besteht. Im Vergleich von intonatorischem Fokus und Fokuspartikeln (Experiment 5 und 6) zeigte sich, dass Fokus den Abruf von kontextuellen Alternativen erleichtert während Fokuspartikeln zu zusätzlichen Kompetitionseffekten führen. Im Allgemeinen liefert deutet die vorliegende Dissertation darauf hin, dass intonatorischer Fokus eine Alternativenmenge im Kopf des Hrers evoziert und dabei hilft relevante Alternativen zu identifizieren. Fokuspartikeln haben eine zusätzliche Funktion und führen whrend der Sprachverarbeitung zu einem strkeren Wettberwerb zwischen Mitgliedern der Alternativenmenge. ; Abstract ; According to Rooth'' alternative semantics (Rooth, 1985, 1992), focus evokes a set of alternatives and that focus particles make reference to this set. The present thesis examines the impact of focus particles and intonational focus on the mental representation of alternatives. In particular, it explores the linguistic and cognitive mechanisms that underlie the establishment of alternative sets in a series of psycholinguistic experiments. Two delayed recall experiments (Exp. 1a and 1b) revealed that participants were better at recalling mentioned alternatives to a focused element when the discourse contained the particles only or even. Experiments 2 and 3 found interference effects of focus particles in the recognition of mentioned alternatives and the rejection of unmentioned alternatives. An additional analysis and Experiment 4 indicate that the set of alternatives consists of various possible replacements of the focused element. Experiment 5 showed that contrastive accents facilitated the retrieval of alternatives while focus particles caused interference effects relative to the condition with an L+H* accent. Overall, this thesis indicates that intonational focus activates alternatives in the listeners mind and helps identifying relevant alternatives. Focus particles, on the other hand, cause stronger competition between the focused element and its alternatives.

    Abstract ; Vorangegangene Untersuchungen zeigen, dass emotionale Inputeigenschaften (extrinsische Eigenschaften) das Erlernen neuer Wortbedeutungen bei Kindern befördern. Diese Eigenschaften sind nicht Teil des Referenten, auf den sich ein zu erlernendes Wort bezieht, z.B. der +/-fröhliche Gesichtsausdruck eines Sprechers, der ein unbekanntes Objekt mittels eines neuen Wortes benennt. Die vorliegende Studie konzentriert sich auf zwei bisher unbeachtete Fragen: a) Lassen sich ähnliche Einflüsse finden, wenn die emotionale Inputeigenschaft Teil des Referenten eines zu erlernenden Wortes ist (intrinsische Eigenschaften), z.B. der +/-fröhliche Gesichtsausdruck eines Akteurs in einer durch ein Verb benannten Handlung? b) Beeinflussen diese Eigenschaften die Bedeutung eines neuen Wortes, indem die emotionale Information mitbestimmt, wie das Wort in späteren Kontexten interpretiert wird? Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich im Einklang mit Studien zu extrinsischen Inputeigenschaften die intrinsischen Eigenschaften ebenfalls förderlich auf das Erlernen neuer Wörter bei Kindern auswirken. Darüber hinaus legt die Studie nahe, dass die Wahrnehmung emotionaler Information während des Wortlernens individueller Variabilität unterliegt. Diese beeinflusst wiederum, wie Kinder die Bedeutung des neuen Wortes konstruieren und interpretieren. Verschiedene Faktoren wie Sprachkompetenz, Aufmerksamkeitssteuerung und soziale Kognition werden diskutiert, die individuelle Unterschiede in der Wahrnehmung emotionaler Information beim Wortlernen hervorrufen könnten. ; Abstract ; Previous research shows that emotional properties of the input (extrinsic properties) enhance children’s learning of novel words. These properties are not features of the referent a novel word is referring to, e.g. the +/-happy intonation or facial expression of a speaker, who is referring to an object or event by using a novel word. With respect to this finding, the present study focuses on two unnoticed questions: a) Are similar influences found when the emotional properties are features of the referent of the word to be acquired (intrinsic properties), e.g. the +/-happy facial expression of an actor in an event that is labeled by a novel verb? b) Do these properties influence the meaning of a novel word, in that the emotional information constrains how the word is interpreted in later contexts? The results indicate that in line with studies on extrinsic emotional properties children’s learning of novel words is enhanced by intrinsic emotional properties. Furthermore, the study suggests that children’s perception of emotional information while learning a novel word is subject to individual variability, which affects how children construct and interpret the meaning of the novel word. Different factors such as language competence, attentional control and social cognition are discussed for inducing individual differences in emotion perception while word learning.
