    In this article, we analyse the use of modality markers in a German text taken from the Freiburger Korpus. We notice how the necessity of preserving face influences the speakers' choices of downgraders and upgraders, devices that determine the intensity of the speech acts and, therefore, the mood of the interaction. ; Die Autorin analysiert die Anwendung der modality markers einem Text aus dem Freiburger Korpus. Sie zeigt wie das Bedürfnis, das Gesicht zu wahren, die Sprecher dazu führt, downgraders oder upgraders auszuwählen, die die Intensität der Sprechakte und damit auch die emotionale Stimmung der Interaktion steuern.

    The purpose of this article is to analyze the results of a survey carried out with students of German as a foreign language, who were inserted in three different learning contexts in the city of São Paulo. The research aimed to investigate the beliefs of these learners concerning their process of learning the German language. The data, collected through questionnaires and interviews, revealed many of these beliefs, some related to, for example, the process of learning the German grammar. The results suggest a relationship between the beliefs and the choice of certain learning strategies. In the analysis stage, we sought to identify possible sources for the detected beliefs, as well as their potential effects on the learning process. In this article, some of the beliefs identified in the survey will be described and analyzed in relation to theoretical and methodological assumptions for teaching grammar in the didactic methods of foreign languages. ; O objetivo deste trabalho é divulgar e analisar os resultados de uma pesquisa realizada em três instituições paulistanas nas quais se ensina/aprende alemão como língua estrangeira. A pesquisa teve como objetivo geral investigar as crenças que alunos de língua alemã mantêm em relação a seu processo de aprendizagem. O corpus, coletado a partir de questionários e entrevistas, revelou muitas dessas crenças, referentes, por exemplo, à aprendizagem de gramática. Os resultados também apontam para a existência de uma relação entre as crenças e a adoção de determinadas estratégias de aprendizagem. Durante a análise, buscou-se identificar possíveis origens para as crenças detectadas, bem como os efeitos potenciais das mesmas sobre a aprendizagem da língua alemã. No presente artigo, algumas das crenças constatadas no estudo serão descritas e analisadas em relação a pressupostos teóricos e metodológicos da didática de línguas estrangeiras para o ensino de gramática.

    This article presents an overall history of a course in German as a Foreign Language (DaF) from the early 1950s until the present time. It focuses on the historical process of institutionalization of this endeavor in Germany and the increasing importance of the subject of German on the international scene through policies related to language and culture enacted by the German government, and the commercialization of books on the teaching of German produced for the global market. ; O artigo apresenta as linhas gerais do desenvolvimento histórico da área de Alemão como Língua Estrangeira (ALE), desde os anos de 1950 até os dias de hoje, focalizando principalmente o processo de sua institucionalização na Alemanha bem como a crescente projeção da área no âmbito internacional, através de medidas de política linguística e cultural do governo alemão e a comercialização de livros didáticos produzidos para o mercado global. ; Der Artikel zeichnet die allgemeinen Entwicklungslinien des Fachs Deutsch als Fremdsprache (DaF) ab den Fünfziger Jahren bis zur heutigen Zeit nach.     Distance-learning language courses are gaining ground because they meet contemporary social demands and expand opportunities for access to new knowledge. They also favor interaction among people with similar goals but who live in places where no live learning arrangements are available. Taking Valente (2002), Garrison and Anderson (2000), and other authors for theoretical bases, this paper reflects on the criteria and aspects to be considered when one plans and ministers online teacher training courses. The data were taken from a distance-based university extension course offered on the Moodle learning platform by a university in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The objective was to encourage German language teachers to further develop their own language skills, reflect on aspects of inter-culturality in teaching the target language, and provide experience with current technological resources. This paper describes the elements that proved to be relevant in the creation and planning of the course, based on authors who deal with characteristics of computer-mediated teaching. The importance of this study is related to the fact that little information is available on the planning of courses in online formats. ; Os cursos de línguas a distância vêm ganhando força por se adequarem às demandas sociais contemporâneas e ampliarem as possibilidades de acesso a novos conhecimentos, favorecendo a interação entre pessoas com objetivos semelhantes, mas oriundas de regiões distantes do local no qual os cursos são constituídos e ministrados.     This paper discusses the notion of linguistic staging as applied to the field of German as a Foreign Language (DaF). We thus propose a concept of staging of linguistic competence as a strategic procedure by which the scientific academic literacy of writers is enacted in a foreign language. Through staging, learners show linguistic competence to formulate complex structures and to express routines and actions of conventionalized language in the target discourse. We hold that linguistic enacting can be expressed through specific structures as well as through processes of selection of terms. This conjecture is discussed based on the predicative use of syntagmas beginning with als, which, due to this structure's functional and semantic properties, can be seen as a means for linguistic staging. The corpus is comprised of abstracts written in German by Brazilian doctoral and master's students, and of "think aloud" protocols of the production of those texts. The data suggest that writers often find it difficult to carry out syntactic plans beginning with als and to choose the correct verbs for arguments beginning with als. Nonetheless, two strategies of linguistic staging were identified during the study: paraphrasing and accessing semantically concrete concepts before taking up abstract concepts. ; O presente ensaio discute a noção de encenação linguística, aplicando-a ao campo de estudos de Alemão como Língua Estrangeira (DaF). Assim, propomos um conceito de encenação da competência linguística, como um procedimento estratégico através do qual a competência científica dos escritores é representada por meio da língua estrangeira.     It is our aim to focus on certain aspects of the complex relationship between language – particularly German – and homeland/identity as seen in the work of a number of Jewish poets and authors. Initially we wish to point out this conflicting relationship in the work of Paul Celan and Rose Ausländer, two Jewish poets born in Romania. The examples of Viktor Klemperer and Ruth Klüger emphasize the complexity of this specific characteristic in the biography/work of German authors of Jewish origin. Elias Canetti, the Nobel Laureate born in Bulgaria, is a literary personality whose biography shows the importance of German culture influence in Eastern Europe at the beginning of the Twentieth Century: Canetti considers himself a German poet who belongs to the German-speaking cultural and literary world. ; Die Beispiele von Paul Celan und Rose Ausländer zeigen einige dramatische Aspekte des komplexen Verhältnisses zwischen Sprache und Identität, bzw. zwischen der deutschen Sprache im Dritten Reich und der literarischen Identität beider Dichter jüdischer Herkunft. Viktor Klemperer ist das Beispiel eines assimilierten Juden, der stets sein Deutschtum und seine tiefe Zugehörigkeit zu Deutschland und der deutschen Kultur unterstreicht. Ruth Klüger gehört zu einer späteren Generation, die sich eigentlich heimatlos fühlt, aber auch in der deutschen Sprache eine literarische Heimat findet. Canetti, Nobelpreisträger, ein sephardischer Jude, der in Bulgarien geboren ist, wählt für sich als Kosmopolit, als Mensch und Dichter eine Heimat, wo die deutsche Sprache und Kultur die Grenzen bilden.

    The current paper discusses Herta Müller's poetry essays in the context of contemporary autobiographical German writing. The question of referentiality of her essays will receive special attention; in these writings several aesthetic characteristics of autobiographical composition will also be shown. Furthermore, it will be demonstrated to what extent the effect of her essayistic writing is not only aesthetic, but also and mainly political. ; No presente artigo discute-se o ensaísmo poetológico de Herta Müller no contexto da escrita autobiográfica alemã contemporânea. A questão da referencialidade de seus ensaios receberá especial atenção; nesses textos também serão apontadas as diversas características estéticas da composição autobiográfica. No mais, demonstra-se em que medida o efeito de sua escrita ensaística não é somente estético mas também e, principalmente, político.

    This article analyses the parallels between, on the one hand, the portrayal of the 'struggling modern subject' depicted by Goethe in his "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers" and, on the other, the psychosocial profile of the 'sentimental man' from the 18th century, product of the cultural environment of the Empfindsamkeit. I argue that in this novel, in borrowing the Empfindsamkeit's most traditional literary genre — the epistolary novel —, Goethe ends up mimicking a number of topoi and discursive techniques proper to this tradition, though in a radically heterodox fashion. The approach will lead us to a deduction of Goethe's own views on the modern subject, which situates him as an important figure within the discourse of modernity. ; O artigo analisa os paralelos entre o retrato do 'sujeito moderno em crise' visto no romance "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers" de Goethe e, por outro lado, o perfil psicossocial do 'homem do sentimento' do século XVIII, fruto da cultura da Empfindsamkeit. Defendo a perspectiva de que, no romance, Goethe não apenas se utiliza do formato literário mais tradicional da Empfindsamkeit (o do romance epistolar), como também se apropria de topói e técnicas discursivas que lhe são próprias em registro radicalmente heterodoxo. A argumentação nos ligará a uma dedução da visão do conceito de subjetividade moderna com que Goethe trabalha em sua fase final do Sturm und Drang, e que o situa como importante nome do discurso filosófico da modernidade.

    In this article, we compare two translations of the novel "Verstörung" (first published in German in 1967) by the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard: the Portuguese translation (1986, by Leopoldina Almeida) and the Brazilian translation (1999, by Hans Peter Welper and José Laurenio de Melo). The article is based on the premise that "Verstörung" is a book with a strong performative dimension; the disturbance which names the book is not only represented in the plot and the characterization of the characters, but also - and especially – in the style, in the language of the German text. We discuss and compare different solutions of translations in the Portuguese versions, as well as the paratexts contained in the two publications. We found two different postures in dealing with the specifics of the language in this novel, both with consequences for their performative effect. Finally, we suggest that these attitudes can be seen as reflections of different moments of literary criticism in relation to Thomas Bernhard. ; Neste artigo, comparamos duas traduções em língua portuguesa do romance "Verstörung" (primeira edição em língua alemã em 1967) do escritor austríaco Thomas Bernhard: a tradução portuguesa (1986, por Leopoldina Almeida) e a brasileira (1999, por Hans Peter Welper e José Laurenio de Melo). Partimos da premissa de que "Verstörung" é um livro com uma dimensão performativa acentuada, ou seja, a perturbação que dá nome ao livro não está representada apenas no enredo e na caracterização dos personagens, mas também – ou sobretudo – no estilo, na linguagem do texto em alemão. Discutimos e comparamos diferentes soluções tradutórias nas referidas versões em português, assim como os paratextos que constam nas duas publicações. Constatamos duas posturas divergentes ao lidar com as especificidades da linguagem da obra, ambas com consequências para o seu efeito performativo. Por fim, sugerimos que essas posturas possam ser reflexos das diferenças da própria crítica literária em relação a Thomas Bernhard em dois momentos ...

    Die hier veröffentlichten Beiträge zeigen literarische Armutsrepräsentationen, die historisch und geographisch variieren und dabei keineswegs immer mit Elend gleichzusetzen sind oder der sozialen Not, die uns die Medien in den letzten Jahren in Form von biertrinkenden Proleten in den Schlafstätten der großen Metropolen präsentiert. Norbert D. Wernicke beschreibt Armut und Armenpflege in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts bei Gotthelf und Dickens, Nadja Reinhard über einen auch heute noch aktuellen Aspekt, die soziale Ausgrenzung als Folge von Armut bei Büchners Woyzeck. Kristina Lahl betrachtet die Erwerbsarmut in den Angestelltenromanen von Hermann Ungar, Martin Kessel und Hans Fallada in der Zeit der Weimarer Republik. Über Heinrich Bölls wenig bekannten Erstlingsroman Kreuz ohne Liebe, transzendentale Heimatlosigkeit und die christliche Existenzphilosophie eines Leon Bloy schreibt Natalia Bashki. Sandra Annika Meyers Beitrag handelt von Schaustellernarrationen von Agla Veteranyi und Franco Biondi und der bedrückenden Armut in Rumänien. Eine Aufwertung des sozialen und kulturellen Kapitals gegenüber dem ökonomischen Kapital und somit eine Umwertung des Armutsbegriffs finden wir bei Immanuel Nover und in seinen Überlegungen zu einer "Poetologie des Wartens bei Clemes Meyer". Und Christoph Lorke schließlich widmet sich dem Thema Armut und Unterversorgung in der DDR aus historischer Perspektive anhand der Reportage von Daniela Dahn über das Prenzlauer "Bergvolk". Offiziell gab es in der DDR keine Armut, und auch heute ist diese soziale Realität kaum bekannt. Im zweiten Teil dieser Ausgabe sind Beiträge aus Literaturwissenschaft und Linguistik versammelt, die nicht direkt zum aktuellen Themenschwerpunkt gehören.     Die Zeitschrift Pandaemonium Germanicum erscheint zweimal jährlich und versteht sich als Forum für die wissenschaftliche Diskussion in den verschiedenen Bereichen der internationalen Germanistik, nämlich der Literatur- und Übersetzungswissenschaft, Linguistik, DaF und Kulturstudien. Die Zeitschrift wird von der deutschen Abteilung der FFLCH-USP (Universität São Paulo) seit 1997 herausgegeben und will zur Verbreitung unveröffentlichter Forschungen von GermanistInnen aus Brasilien und anderen Ländern, sowie zur Förderung des Dialogs zwischen der Germanistik und anderen Wissensbereichen beitragen.

    In this paper we discuss some of Anatol Rosenfeld's most important writings on the theater, especially his O Teatro épico (Epic Theater), where he takes up the principles of Brecht’s dramatic art and Brecht's work in organizing anthologies of outstanding German literary authors (Lessing, Goethe and Schiller, for example). The objective here is to show how all these influences are intertwined in Rosenfeld’s analysis of the Brazilian theatrical production of the 1960s. Between the lines of Rosenfeld's critique one can see the ethical dimension he attributes to Brazil's intellectual activity. He also mentions the efforts taken to adapt the transforming potential of Brechtian theater to the specific political and cultural context of countries like Brazil. ; O presente artigo aborda alguns dos principais escritos de Anatol Rosenfeld sobre teatro, sobretudo O teatro épico, obra em que se debruça sobre os preceitos da dramaturgia de Brecht, bem como seu trabalho como organizador de antologias de autores canônicos da literatura alemã (Lessing, Goethe, Schiller), para mostrar como essas influências se cruzam em sua análise da produção teatral brasileira dos anos 1960. Nas entrelinhas da crítica de Rosenfeld, percebe-se a dimensão ética que ele atribuía à sua atividade intelectual e, ainda, um esforço de adaptar o potencial transformador do teatro brechtiano às demandas de um contexto político e cultural específico como o brasileiro.

    One of the most important chapters in the reception of German theater in Brazil began in 1958 with the presentation of Berthold Brecht's play "The Good Woman of Setsuan". The subsequent performance of many of his works brought up new dramaturgic and theoretical questions in a context that was open to aesthetic experimentation and marked by a dialectic between the theater and the turbulent social context of the period. Groups such as Arena, Oficina, and CPC discussed, updated and articulated Brecht's work through their experimentation. Since this reception in Brazil, both in the late 1950s and today, is based on several different theoretical and critical references, it would seem well to go back to Anatol Rosenfeld's critique of Brecht. From his broad knowledge of aesthetic theater, epic theater theory, Brazilian theater and Brecht's work, Rosenfeld holds an important place in the debates on Brecht's works and Brecht's influence on Brazilian theater. In this article we take up several phases in Rosenfeld's work, which is theoretical as well as historical and critical. His contributions are considered among the most lucid and updated studies on Brecht and the Brazilian theater. ; Um dos capítulos mais importantes da recepção do teatro alemão no Brasil se iniciou em 1958, com a montagem de "A alma boa de Setsuan". A encenação de muitas entre suas obras a partir de então colocou novas questões dramatúrgicas e teóricas num cenário aberto à experimentação estética e marcado pela dialética entre o teatro e o turbulento contexto social brasileiro da época. Grupos como o Arena, o Oficina e o CPC discutiram, atualizaram e articularam a obra de Brecht com suas próprias pesquisas. Como essa recepção, ontem como hoje no Brasil, é feita a partir dos mais diferentes referenciais teóricos e críticos, faz-se necessária a revisitação da crítica esclarecedora de Anatol Rosenfeld sobre Brecht.     The article discusses Heiner Müller's play "Description of image" as an example of his late playwriting. By analyzing the various movements of the text, we seek to understand its qualification, given by Müller himself in his autobiography, as an autodrama, a term that would refer, according to the hypothesis of the article, to a comparison with the Brechtian genre of the learning play (Lehrstück). ; O artigo aborda a peça "Descrição de imagem", de Heiner Müller, como um exemplo de sua dramaturgia tardia. Pela análise dos diversos movimentos do texto, busca-se entender a qualificação, dada pelo próprio Müller em sua autobiografia, da peça como um autodrama, termo que remeteria, segundo a hipótese do artigo, a um confronto com o gênero brechtiano da peça de aprendizagem (Lehrstück).

    In 1903 Arthur Schnitzler published the play "Reigen" ("La ronde"), which presented ten dialogues, each one occurring before and after a sexual conquest. The play intended to present typical behavior of social statuses through the way each figure behaved in achieving the same goal. The sexual inferences in the text caused a commotion and it was criticized as being immoral. In 1950 the play was transposed to the screen in a movie directed by Max Ophüls. This work was basically faithful to the play, but gave a certain lightness to the theme, which would seem to indicate a loosening of moral standards toward sex during that period. In 2012 Fernando Meirelles directed a film inspired by Schnitzler's play: "360". Even though the present day stands out for its sexual liberation, the movie does not show Ophüls' lightness. On the contrary, the film is bleak and depicts interpersonal relationships through the prism of guilt implied by infidelity and repressed sexual desires. In this article we will discuss how the theme of lust and sexual impulses expressed by Schnitzler evolved in its different representations after more than a century, and how the ethical problem was shaped to each work and its moment in history. ; Em 1903, Arthur Schnitzler publicou a peça "Reigen" (port. "A ronda"), a qual apresentava dez diálogos, cada qual se desenvolvendo antes e depois de uma conquista sexual. A obra pretende apresentar comportamentos típicos de diferentes classes sociais através da forma como se comportavam para chegar ao mesmo objetivo. A ciranda sexual apresentada no texto causou comoção em sua época e foi criticada por sua alegada imoralidade. Em 1950, a peça foi transposta para o cinema em um filme de Max Ophüls. Sua obra buscou ser fiel ao original, mas também concedeu uma certa leveza ao tema, o que parece indicar um alargamento nos padrões morais diante o sexo. Em 2012, Fernando Meirelles filmou uma releitura da peça de Schnitzler: "360". Na atualidade, uma era marcada pela liberação sexual, o filme não mantém a leveza ...
