    Abstract ; Aesthetics represent a major theme in K.W.F. Solger's (1780-1819) philosophical as well as philological intellectual development. Our work, based on his manuscripts and on the posthumous editions, will enlighten its genesis and reception between 1800 and 1830. After presenting the sources, we describe how these are connected to one another and which concepts they let prevail (notably symbol, tragedy and irony). His intellectual biography is then being drawn from a historical inquiry stressing out his role in the University of Berlin between 1811 and 1819. A comparison between the different types of texts available today will finally point out the literary stakes of a work that has been kept unfinished by its author and has been widely revised by its posthumous editors. This research is mainly based on correspondence and aims at pointing out Solger's relationships to his contemporaries in the Romantic and Idealistic Berlin.

    Other ; Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Garbage, The City, and Death. A Four Act Scandal in Post-war Germany The paper explores the dramaturgy of the scandals around the play Garbage, The City and Death (Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod) by German playwright, theatre and film maker Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Published in 1976, the play immediately caused a scandal in West Germany, because it was accused of reproducing anti-Semitic stereotypes. The presentation sheds light on the different phases of the scandal and their historical and cultural contexts in post-war Germany – starting as a literary scandal in 1976, being transformed into a theatre scandal in the 1980ies and finally being dissolved by the German premiere in 2009. The paper is structured as follows: Act One: The Literary Scandal. Destroying Fassbinder’s Garbage, Act Two: Preventing the Staging of the Play, Act Three: Blocking the Opening Night, Act Four: Performing the Play in Germany. By analysing the dramaturgical structure of this specific scandal, the paper discusses the following hypotheses: 1. Scandals arise through the circulation of decontextualised information in public. This is due to either a lack of information about the actual object or incident being scandalised or a lack of information about the context of the object or incident. This lack is caused by the logic of the scandal itself: Because the play or the performance is prohibited, it has been withdrawn from the public, making it impossible to form a well-founded opinion on the controversy. 2. The scandal is driven forward by an emotionalising rhetoric built around the decontextualised information. 3. Once the gap of information is filled, the scandalising rhetoric turns into a rhetoric of irrelevance: Reviews of the first performance of Garbage, The City and Death in Germany considered the play hardly a matter of public concern.

    Abstract ; Die Definition des Schleiers als Ursymbol der Kunst bei Goethe, für die W. Emrich ein wichtiger Initiator ist, bleibt im wesentlichen Punkt unverändert als schlagkräftiger Ausdruck. Auf der einen Seite ist der Schleier ein frühes Anzeichen der späteren Formel ›offenbares Geheimnis‹, auf der anderen ›das Urbild‹, in dem alle Bildlichkeit der Dichtung gründet, oder eine wahre Symbolik, hinter deren Andeutungen das Lebendige um so deutlicher sichtbar wird, und schließlich die neuzeitliche Konstruktion des Ästhetischen schlechthin, mit der das Geheimnis aus den semantischen Tiefenschichten in die Textur der Dichtung übergetreten ist. Alles in allem ist der Schleier ein Symbol, das für die Definition der Kunst bei Goethe unverzichtbar ist. Außer diesen Zügen des Schleiers, die die Ambivalenz als Hauptmerkmal stiften, sind andere Erscheinungsformen des Schleiers in den Werken Goethes in breitem Maße vorhanden, die es nötig haben, anders kategorisiert zu werden. Die völlige Verblendung ist die eine, die stufenweise Entschleierung die andere. Das Hauptziel meiner Arbeit ist, den begrenzten Einsatz des Schleiersymbols allein in der Kunstebene auch auf andere Ebenen zu erweitern, und zwar mit einer gezielt motivischen Untersuchung der mannigfaltigen Erscheinungsformen des Schleiers. Demnach wird es ein Hauptanliegen der vorliegenden Arbeit sein, durch eine typologische Bestimmung des Schleiermotivs, das abhängig vom Kontext jeweils natürlich auch andere Konnotationen haben wird, Goethes Denkbild näher zu bestimmen. Anhand einer Parallelstellen-Konkordanz sollen Funktion und Bedeutung des Schleiers im Spannungsfeld zwischen Vorhang und Verhängnis ermittelt werden. Aber um im umfassenden Werk Goethes nicht zu sehr blindlings umherzuirren, sollen nur repräsentative Fälle als Demonstrationsobjekte ausgewählt und kategorisiert werden, um auch die Einzelheit in ihrem vollen Sinn im umfassenden Horizont der Denkform Goethes zu sichern. Und am Rande der Schleierdiskussion bildet sich eine Kulisse für das Nachdenken über die verschiedenen Formen der modernen Subjektivität. Die wissenschaftliche und die ästhetische Subjektivität sind das augenfälligste Ergebnis. ; Abstract ; The definition of veil as the original symbol of Goethe’s art, for which W. Emrich is an important initiator, remains mainly unchanged as a striking expression. On one hand the veil is an early sign of the later formula “obvious secret” but on the other hand the archetype in which all symbols of poetry is based. Or a true symbol expressing strongly the vitality and finally par excellence the contemporary construction of the aesthetic which leads to the secret from the profound semantics in the texture of poetry. All in all defining art, the veil is a symbol, which is essential for Goethe. Beyond these characters of veil, which shows ambivalence as a main feature, there are other forms of the veil at Goethe’s art, which have to be seen in a different way. The perfect infatuation is the one; the gradual unveiling is the other. The main goal of my study is to see the broad use of the veil symbols not only in the art area but also in other areas: To assign a motive-examination of the diverse appearances of veils. Thus, it will be a main objective of this study to define Goethe’s way of thinking more precisely. For this I will analyze the veil motive typologically, which depending on the context, but sometimes of course will have other konnotations. Applying concordance for parallel phrases I will determine the function and the meaning of veils as curtain or as fate. But in order not to be blindly strayed in Goethe’s broad work, only adequate cases should be selected and categorized as demonstration objects to ensure that all details in their comprehensive horizon of Goethe’s way of thinking are assured. And on the verge of the veil discussion a scenery is formed for meditation on the various forms of the modern subjectivity. The academic and aesthetical subjectivity is the most significant result.
