    À la croisée de la sociologie de la culture et des approches postcoloniales, cette thèse explore les mécanismes par lesquels des écrivains contemporains originaires de pays francophones d’Afrique subsaharienne accèdent à la reconnaissance littéraire. Le matériau empirique comprend des archives, des entretiens avec des auteurs, des éditeurs et des professeurs, des observations de manifestations culturelles, ainsi qu’une enquête statistique sur 404 écrivains socialisés dans cette région du monde, actifs entre 1983 et 2008. Leur légitimation se fait en deux vagues distinctes : le tournant des années quatre-vingt puis le milieu des années quatre-vingt-dix. L’accroissement du nombre de titres parus, l’importance prise par le roman dans la hiérarchie des genres littéraires et l’évolution des possibilités éditoriales contribuent à structurer un espace littéraire africain. L’enjeu de cet espace est la définition légitime de l’écrivain africain, liée à la nature de son rapport à l’Afrique. Depuis les années quatre-vingt, la population d’auteurs étudiés, qui constitue une élite sociale et culturelle marquée par la mobilité, se féminise continûment, se sédentarise hors d’Afrique et se professionnalise. Les éditeurs situés à Paris, où s’affirme un secteur spécialisé, jouent un rôle décisif sur un marché du livre en partie dissocié des marchés qui prévalent en Afrique. Des études de cas s’articulent à l’analyse de ces évolutions globales : celle du manifeste « pour une littérature-monde en français » envisagé comme une mobilisation collective, celle de la représentation de la colonisation dans les œuvres d’Amadou Hampâté Bâ et d’Ahmadou Kourouma, celle de courriers de lecteurs At the crossroads of the sociology of culture and postcolonial studies, this dissertation explores the mechanisms by which contemporary writers from Francophone countries of sub-Saharan Africa attain literary recognition. The empirical material comprises archives, interviews with writers, publishers, and cultural agents; ethnographic observations of cultural events; and a statistical survey of 404 writers who were socialized in this part of the world, and who were active between 1983 and 2008. Their legitimation follows two waves: the first occurs in the early eighties and the second in the mid-nineties. The increase in the number of publications, the importance of the novel in the hierarchy of literary genres, and the evolution of the publishing industry combine to structure an African literary space. Its stake is the legitimate definition of the African writer, related to the nature of the writer’s relationship to Africa. The authors located in this space are socially elite and often mobile. From the eighties onwards, the number of new female writers has increased steadily; writers are more professionalized and more often settled outside Africa. Publishers in Paris have played a decisive role in a book market partly dissociated from the markets prevailing in African countries. The analysis of these global evolutions is complemented by case studies: the controversy surrounding the manifesto “Toward a World Literature in French” seen as a collective mobilization; the representation of colonization in the texts of Amadou Hampâté Bâ and Ahmadou Kourouma; and letters from readers

    Ce travail se propose de comparer les oeuvres de deux représentants majeurs de la modernité poétique du tournant du XXe siècle, Fernando Pessoa et Rainer Maria Rilke, que rapproche notamment la propension à produire des modèles poétiques multiples et concurrents. On suppose ici que ce phénomène, associé généralement à la « crise du moi » qui caractériserait cette période artistique et littéraire, n'est par ailleurs pas étranger au fait que les deux poètes entretiennent dans leur rapport au monde et à la création un intérêt particulier pour l'ouïe et le domaine du sonore, aussi bien sur le plan de la production que de la réception (le « poïétique » et l'« esthésique », selon une terminologie proposée par Paul Valéry). L'étude s'intéresse ainsi à diverses facettes des oeuvres des deux poètes, de leur conception de l'inspiration poétique et de la notion de rythme à leur recours à des techniques de spatialisation, en passant par d'autres aspects qui leur sont communs, tels que l'écriture théâtrale, l'intérêt pour le spiritisme ou encore la traduction et l'écriture en langue étrangère. L'établissement de parallèles selon un tel « point d'écoute » acroamatique voudrait permettre de mieux cerner la modernité (et l'anti-modernité) propre aux deux auteurs et, par extension, contribuer à la définition de leur pertinence particulière dans le contexte de la post-modernité This study intends to compare the works of two leading representatives of poetic modernism at the turn of the 20th century, Fernando Pessoa and Rainer Maria Rilke, who notably shared an inclination for producing multiple and concurrential poetic models. The study's author assumes that this phenomenon, commonly linked to a « crisis of the self » characteristic of this artistic and literary period, is eminently related to the fact that both poets had a keen interest in the realm of sound and hearing, at the poietic (the side of production) as well as the aesthesic level (i.e. the level of aesthetic reception), to borrow a terminology coined by Paul Valéry. The study therefore focuses on several facets of the work of the two poets, ranging from their conception of poetic inspiration and the notion of rhythm to their resort to techniques of spatialization, along with other aspects common to both, as dramatic writing, the interest in spiritism, translation and writing in a foreign language. By establishing parallels from an acroamatic « point of hearing », the study aims at allowing for a better understanding of the two authors' specific modernism (and antimodernism), as well as beginning to trace out their relevance in the context of postmodernism

L'étude s'intéresse ainsi à diverses facettes des oeuvres des deux poètes, de leur conception de l'inspiration poétique et de la notion de rythme à leur recours à des techniques de spatialisation, en passant par d'autres aspects qui leur sont communs, tels que l'écriture théâtrale, l'intérêt pour le spiritisme ou encore la traduction et l'écriture en langue étrangère. L'établissement de parallèles selon un tel « point d'écoute » acroamatique voudrait permettre de mieux cerner la modernité (et l'anti-modernité) propre aux deux auteurs et, par extension, contribuer à la définition de leur pertinence particulière dans le contexte de la post-modernité This study intends to compare the works of two leading representatives of poetic modernism at the turn of the 20th century, Fernando Pessoa and Rainer Maria Rilke, who notably shared an inclination for producing multiple and concurrential poetic models. The study's author assumes that this phenomenon, commonly linked to a « crisis of the self » characteristic of this artistic and literary period, is eminently related to the fact that both poets had a keen interest in the realm of sound and hearing, at the poietic (the side of production) as well as the aesthesic level (i.e. the level of aesthetic reception), to borrow a terminology coined by Paul Valéry. The study therefore focuses on several facets of the work of the two poets, ranging from their conception of poetic inspiration and the notion of rhythm to their resort to techniques of spatialization, along with other aspects common to both, as dramatic writing, the interest in spiritism, translation and writing in a foreign language. By establishing parallels from an acroamatic « point of hearing », the study aims at allowing for a better understanding of the two authors' specific modernism (and antimodernism), as well as beginning to trace out their relevance in the context of postmodernism

    À la croisée de la sociologie de la culture et des approches postcoloniales, cette thèse explore les mécanismes par lesquels des écrivains contemporains originaires de pays francophones d’Afrique subsaharienne accèdent à la reconnaissance littéraire. Le matériau empirique comprend des archives, des entretiens avec des auteurs, des éditeurs et des professeurs, des observations de manifestations culturelles, ainsi qu’une enquête statistique sur 404 écrivains socialisés dans cette région du monde, actifs entre 1983 et 2008. Leur légitimation se fait en deux vagues distinctes : le tournant des années quatre-vingt puis le milieu des années quatre-vingt-dix. L’accroissement du nombre de titres parus, l’importance prise par le roman dans la hiérarchie des genres littéraires et l’évolution des possibilités éditoriales contribuent à structurer un espace littéraire africain. L’enjeu de cet espace est la définition légitime de l’écrivain africain, liée à la nature de son rapport à l’Afrique. Depuis les années quatre-vingt, la population d’auteurs étudiés, qui constitue une élite sociale et culturelle marquée par la mobilité, se féminise continûment, se sédentarise hors d’Afrique et se professionnalise. Les éditeurs situés à Paris, où s’affirme un secteur spécialisé, jouent un rôle décisif sur un marché du livre en partie dissocié des marchés qui prévalent en Afrique. Des études de cas s’articulent à l’analyse de ces évolutions globales : celle du manifeste « pour une littérature-monde en français » envisagé comme une mobilisation collective, celle de la représentation de la colonisation dans les œuvres d’Amadou Hampâté Bâ et d’Ahmadou Kourouma, celle de courriers de lecteurs At the crossroads of the sociology of culture and postcolonial studies, this dissertation explores the mechanisms by which contemporary writers from Francophone countries of sub-Saharan Africa attain literary recognition. The empirical material comprises archives, interviews with writers, publishers, and cultural agents; ethnographic observations of cultural events; and a statistical survey of 404 writers who were socialized in this part of the world, and who were active between 1983 and 2008. Their legitimation follows two waves: the first occurs in the early eighties and the second in the mid-nineties. The increase in the number of publications, the importance of the novel in the hierarchy of literary genres, and the evolution of the publishing industry combine to structure an African literary space. Its stake is the legitimate definition of the African writer, related to the nature of the writer’s relationship to Africa. The authors located in this space are socially elite and often mobile. From the eighties onwards, the number of new female writers has increased steadily; writers are more professionalized and more often settled outside Africa. Publishers in Paris have played a decisive role in a book market partly dissociated from the markets prevailing in African countries. The analysis of these global evolutions is complemented by case studies: the controversy surrounding the manifesto “Toward a World Literature in French” seen as a collective mobilization; the representation of colonization in the texts of Amadou Hampâté Bâ and Ahmadou Kourouma; and letters from readers
