Lavater was admired and detested for his unconventional approach to theology and his rediscovery of physiognomy. He was an avid communicator and through his correspondence became known to almost all leading personalities of eighteenth century Europe, such as Goethe, Wieland and Rousseau. The more than 21,000 letters in Lavater's estate in the Zentralbibliothek Zürich display the enormous thematic variety produced during a remarkable forty years of correspondence. This unique source material is now being published for the first time. IDC Publishers makes this collection available for research to such various disciplines as theology, history, literature, arts, humanities and above all, the history of eighteenth century culture. Scope: * 9,121 letters from Lavater * 12,302 letters to Lavater * 1,850 correspondents

Lüngen H. A hierarchical model of German morphology in a spoken language lexicon environment . Bielefeld (Germany): Bielefeld University; 2002. ; The dissertation presents a sign-based theory of the morphology of German. The general strategy is to evaluate the existing controversial literature on the lexicon in Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar on the one hand and on morphology on the other hand, and to make the results compatible by formulating the necessary feature declarations, type hierarchies, principles and schemata in HPSG. It is argued that a Morphological Head Feature Principle holds for morphological and syntactic head features in German derivation and compounding. In inflection, though, syntactic head features are combined via a newly introduced Inflectional Marking Principle. Furthermore, a morphological ...

It is widely acknowledged by second language researchers that whether pedagogical rules should or can be explicitly taught is largely dependent on their complexity. Nevertheless, there is no consensus on what rule complexity exactly means. This paper first examines existing accounts of rule complexity and presents a conceptual analysis of the term ‘rule’. It then proposes that ‘complex’ should not be equated with ‘difficult’, but used in a purely structural sense. Specifically a conditional formulation is proposed in which the number of concepts in the antecedent and the consequent, the number of subconditions, and the number of ‘if-then’ connections (subrules) within a given rule domain govern complexity. Finally, a classification of strategies of complexity reduction in foreign language pedagogy is sketched. Throughout, examples will be given from the field of German as a foreign language.

In South Tyrol the Italian and German languages have coexisted for centuries. After a problematic development in the first half of the 20th century the situation has stabilised through an intense programme to protect the German-speaking minority living there. Though these protective measures were introduced primarily to keep the linguistic identity of the Italian and German language groups stable, they have led to a considerable degree of individual bilingualism, especially with the speakers of German. At the same time certain means were introduced to facilitate the use of German in the legal and administrative context of Italy. So these steps at the end have led to an intensified contact between the languages, and there is a growing awareness of the advantages of speaking more than one language. With the opening towards Europe and with general trends in society like globalisation and individualisation, a new model of a bilingual identity is developing which takes into consideration its usefulness in modem transcultural interaction as well as its value for regional self-identification. This development also leads to a higher degree of linguistic variation in the society of South Tyrol.

  22. Intransitive accomplishments and the lexicon : the role of implicit arguments, definiteness, and reflexivity in aspectual composition

Theories of aspectual composltlon assume that accomplishments arise when a transitive verb has an incremental theme argument which is realized as a quantized NP-foremost, an NP which is not a mass noun or a bare plural-in direct object position. A problem confronting this assumption is the large number of intransitive, unergative verbs in Getman and English that occur in accomplishment expressions. The paper argues that this problem can be solved within a Standard theory of aspectual composition if additional, independently motivated lexical assumptions about argmnent structure, the representation of implicit arguments and lexical presuppositions are made. It turns out that a distinction between lexically detennined definitcness versus non-definiteness of implicit arguments in particular plays a cmcial role, as weil as one between implicitly reflexive and non-reflexive arguments in that implicitly definite and implicitly reflexive arguments allow for accomplishment expressions. This is explained by the semantics of definiteness and refl.exivity, respectively. Apart from these verbs, there is another large group of unergatives which show that, in contrast to a common assumption in aspectual composition theory, verbs thermselves and not only VPs can be quantized. This leads to a lexical distinction between "mass" and "count" verbs.

This paper is about the meaning of the progressive aspect, which has been notoriously difficult to give a satisfying account of. A number of intriguing properties of its meaning were first brought out in formal semantic treatments. An event semantics approach to the progressive which integrates concepts of normality and perspective as well as adequate lexical representations seems to be particularly promising. In section 2 I will present several problems connected with the semantics of the progressive that are crucial for shaping its truth conditions. Several solutions to these problems that have been suggested in the literature will be discussed. In section 3 I will sketch a preliminary account of the meaning of the progressive aspect. In section 3.1 the basic components that underlie the truth conditions of the progressive will be described. In section 3.2 I will present underlying lexical assumptions and the truth conditions for the progressive. Finally, in section 4, I will evaluate the proposal by revisiting the problems discussed.

In the German-speaking regions of Switzerland, dialect is spoken by all social groups in most communicative situations, Standard German being used only when prescribed. Swiss dialects rarely appeared in written form before the 1980s, apart from the genre of dialect literature. Due to the growing acceptance of informal writing styles in many European languages, dialect is increasingly employed for written personal communication, in particular in computer-mediated communication (CMC). In Swiss Internet Relay Chat (IRC) rooms, varieties of German are used side by side as all chatters have a command of both standard and dialectal varieties. Depending on the channel, the proportion of dialectal contributions can be as high as 90 percent. The choice of a particular variety depends on both individual preference and on the predominant variety used within a specific thread. In this paper I take a quantitative approach to language variation in IRC and demonstrate how such an approach can help embed qualitative research on code-switching in CMC.

The Book of Job from the Old Testament is juxtaposed in detail with its hypertext in Thomas Mann's novel: the chapter where Jacob mourns for his "dead" Joseph. An argument is made that Mann's awareness of rabbinical literature creates a connection with the Akedah tradition, i.e., different ways of dealing with the sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham in Genesis. The notion that Abraham actually does kill Isaac, as suggested by a medieval rabbinical text, is interwoven into the analysis of Jacob's mourning for Joseph who appears as an Issaac-like sacrificial victim in Mann's novel. A connection is established between Abraham, Job and Jacob as figures whose children are claimed by God, and their reactions to this test are compared.
