Bemerkung(en):	Advertised in the United States chronicle, Providence, Sept. 29, 1785 Alden notes two states. In one (state A), p. [24] ends with three humorous poems. In another state (state B), p. [24] ends with a request from the printer Alden, J.E. Rhode Island, 1002 Attributed to Benjamin West by Evans. The author introduces himself, p. [17-18], as though for the first time: "I am a stranger to that part of the public where my labours are now to appear." The previous almanacs in this series, and that for the following year, are signed by West Drake, M. Almanacs, 12884 Drake, M. Almanacs, 12885 English Short Title Catalog, W22738 Evans, 19377 Reproduction of original from Boston Public Library The eclipse predictions are nearly identical with those in Bickerstaff's genuine Boston almanack for 1786 (Boston : E. Russell, 1785); the author signs himself "Isaac Bickerstaff Esq." in a note dated at Providence, the locale of Benjamin West. Bemerkung(en):	Includes files in TIFF, GIF and PDF formats with inclusion of keyword searchable text Advertised in the Hampshire herald, Springfield, Nov. 22, 1785 An astronomical diary: or An almanack, for 1785, by Isaac Bickerstaff (Springfield: Brooks & Russell) is attributable to Strong for similar reasons, and is presumably the almanac mentioned in the preface to the present one as the author's production for the previous year. The identity between the present almanac and the Patten edition, together with the slight variance between their calculations and those in the Hudson & Goodwin almanac issued under Strong's own name and calculated for Hartford, suggest that the calculations in the former were made for Stebbins & Russell and for the meridian of Springfield, and that Stebbins & Russell then printed Patten's issue for him Attributed by Evans to Benjamin West, evidently on the basis of West's association with the name Bickerstaff. However, except for the statement of the meridian on the title page, the almanac is identical in content and typography with An almanack, for the year of our Lord Christ, 1786 ... Calculated for the meridian of Hartford ... By Isaac Bickerstaff (Hartford: Nathaniel Patten). In these two publications the eclipse notes and the calendar page calculations are practically identical with those in Nehemiah Strong's An astronomical ephemeris, calendar, or almanack for ... 1786 ... Rhode Island, 1001 Drake, M. Almanacs, 12883 Erroneously attributed by Evans to Benjamin West. The actual calculator appears to be Nathan Daboll. The eclipse predictions are practically identical with those in The New England almanack and gentlemen and ladies diary for 1786 (New London), calculated by Daboll under the pseudonym of Edmund Freebetter. The astronomical and horological notes on the calendar pages are similar, and the calculations for the moon are identical. The other calculations on these pages vary to a degree reflecting the difference in meridian between New London and Providence Evans, 19375 West and Carter, the publisher, severed relations with the 1781 issue. West's almanac was published thereafter at Providence by Bennett Wheeler as the North American calendar, while Carter continued the New England almanack over the Bickerstaff pseudonym with which West is often identified. The eclipse predictions (p. [3]), the ephemeris (p. [8]), the astronomical notes on the calendar pages, and the columns on these pages giving calculations for the moon's place and its rising and setting, are all either identical or practically so with those in West's The North-American calendar for 1785 (Providence). The remainder of the calendar page calculations vary slightly for the most part, reflecting the difference in meridian between Providence and Boston Microform version available in the Readex Early American Imprints series
