    In the wake of World War II and the Holocaust, it seemed there was no place for German in Israel and no trace of Hebrew in Germany — the two languages and their cultures appeared as divergent as the directions of their scripts. Yet when placed side by side on opposing pages, German and Hebrew converge in the middle. Comprised of essays on literature, history, philosophy, and the visual and performing arts, this volume explores the mutual influence of two linguistic cultures long held as separate or even as diametrically opposed. From Moses Mendelssohn’s arrival in Berlin in 1748 to the recent wave of Israeli migration to Berlin, the essays gathered here shed new light on the painful yet productive relationship between modern German and Hebrew cultures.

    "Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754) was the foremost representative of the Danish-Norwegian Enlightenment and also a European figure of note. He was an Enlightenment thinker in the conventional sense, with significant works in natural law and history, but also a very important body of moral essays and epistles. He authored several engaging autobiographies and European travelogues; and - not least - a major utopian novel that was a European bestseller, a couple of interesting satires, and a large number of plays, mainly comedies. These comedies have secured Holberg's status as the most significant playwright in Scandinavia before Ibsen and Strindberg; his plays remain hugely popular and have hardly been off the stage since he died. Through his extensive oeuvre, but especially through his plays, Holberg had a decisive influence on the formation of modern Danish as a literary language, something that was a self-conscious effort on the part of a man who saw himself as an educator of the public. Despite all these accomplishments Holberg is most often remembered outside of the Nordic countries for Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite and in the title of one of the most prestigious prizes in the humanities. It is the aim of the contributors to this volume to revive Holberg as a very major figure from a very minor corner of the Enlightenment world, presenting the latest scholarship from Scandinavia on the main areas of Holberg's work with serious emphasis on the wider European Enlightenment context and perspectives.     The Daughter Zion allegory represents a particular narrative articulation of the paradigm of bridal mysticism deriving from the Song of Songs, the core element of which is the quest of Daughter Zion for a worthy object of love. Examining medieval German religious writing (verse and prose) and Dutch prose works, Annette Volfing shows that this storyline provides an excellent springboard for investigating key aspects of medieval religious and literary culture. In particular, she argues, the allegory lends itself to an exploration of the medieval sense of self; of the scope of human agency within the mystical encounter; of the gendering of the religious subject; of conceptions of space and enclosure; and of fantasies of violence and aggression. Volfing suggests that Daughter Zion adaptations increasingly tended to empower the religious subject to seek a more immediate relationship with the divine and to embrace a wider range of emotions: the mediating personifications are gradually eliminated in favour of a model of religious experience in which the human subject engages directly with Christ.0Overall, the development of the allegory from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries marks the striving towards a greater sense of equality and affective reciprocity with the divine, within the context of an erotic union

Yet when placed side by side on opposing pages, German and Hebrew converge in the middle.     Main description: Dieses Buch befaßt sich mit der Auslautverhärtung des Deutschen. Insbesondere wird erörtert, wie dieses phonologische Phänomen in einer Theorie zu behandeln ist, die Prinzipien und Parameter anstelle von Regeln einsetzt. Zunächst werden die zu analysierenden Daten aufgeführt, worauf eine eingehende Diskussion früherer Arbeiten zu diesem Thema folgt. Anschließend wird die Rektionsphonologie vorgestellt und eine rektionsphonologische Analyse der Auslautverhärtung entwickelt, die viele der Probleme in früheren Ansätzen löst. Die Auslautverhärtung wird als phonologischer Reduktionsprozeß interpretiert, wobei dem laryngalen Element L (= Stimmhaftigkeit in Obstruenten) die autosegmentale Lizenz entzogen wird. Schließlich wird danach gefragt, ob und in welchem Sinne durch die Auslautverhärtung phonologische Kontraste neutralisiert werden, wie oft in der Literatur angenommen wird

Specifically, it discusses how this phonological event can be handled in a theoretical framework based on principles and parameters rather than rules. It begins with an outline of the data to be analysed, which is followed by a detailed discussion of earlier work on final devoicing. The author then introduces Government Phonology and develops a Government Phonology analysis which overcomes many of the problems associated with these previous accounts. She argues that final devoicing should be interpreted as a phonological weakening process which consists in the withdrawal of autosegmental licensing from the laryngeal element L (= voicing on obstruents). Finally, the author investigates whether final devoicing results in phonological neutralisation, as is often assumed in the literature
