    Zusammenfassung: Quotations "oscillate between the occasional and the conventional" as Burger/Buhofer/Sialm (1982) once succinctly formulated. Developed from a PhD thesis, this book explores precisely this "oscillating" character of quotations: It discusses the nature of quotations and the relationship between common quotations and phraseology from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. Shakespeare's Hamlet was chosen as a canonical text whose frequently quoted traces can be followed across centuries. Scholarly work from various disciplines leads to an understanding of quotations as moving in a space created by the two dimensions of reference and repetition: Quotations are definable by a horizontal communicative axis (reference) and a vertical, intertextual axis of manifest lineages of use (repetition). Empirically, the data led to a categorisation of quotations as verbal, thematic and onomastic, based on the question "what has been repeated: words, themes or names?" Case studies further corroborate the proposition that verbal quotations may become (almost) ordinary multi-word units if the following conditions are met: a) they lose their referential dimension, b) they develop formal and/or semantic usage patterns and/or c) they are no longer limited to their original, literary discourse

    This monograph deals with argument drop in the German prefield. Chapter 1 gives an overview of the book. Chapter 2 focuses on topic drop of structurally vs. obliquely cased arguments. The question by which factors structural and oblique cases can be kept apart is discussed in great detail. It is claimed that oblique case marking is the spell-out of a certain semantic content, namely an actant’s involvement within a complex event, which needs to be represented at the surface – this, however, is impossible under ellipsis. Thus, the gap’s content must be reconstructed via identity with its antecedent. In chapter 3, I show that parts of the gap resulting from topic drop can be bound under predicate identity (in the sense of semantic equivalence) in context and target. In dependence of whether the binder of (the bindee part of) the gap is referential or not, identity between antecedent and gap is obligatory (or not). Chapter 4 is an investigation of 1st/2nd (vs. 3rd) person referential null subjects that can be dropped independently of the presence of a discourse antecedent and despite apparent syncretisms within verbal inflectional paradigms. As is shown, German out of the blue-drop is neither topic drop nor diary drop, but an instance of inflection-dependent subject omission.

    This thesis investigates the processing of non-canonical word orders and whether non-canonical orders involving object topicalizations, midfield scrambling and particle verbs are treated the same by native (L1) and non-native (L2) speakers. The two languages investigated are Norwegian and German. 32 L1 Norwegian and 32 L1 German advanced learners of Norwegian were tested in two experiments on object topicalization in Norwegian. The results from the online self-paced reading task and the offline agent identification task show that both groups are able to identify the non-canonical word order and show a facilitatory effect of animate subjects in their reanalysis. Similarly high error rates in the agent identification task suggest that globally unambiguous object topicalizations are a challenging structure for L1 and L2 speakers alike.
