    This article looks at Bible engagement in a digital age, focusing both on multimedia engagement with the Bible through the ages and on the changes that new technologies bring to the reading process, and asking some questions about our use of different technologies for different tasks. The article opens up the new possibilities afforded to scholars through the digitization of manuscripts and libraries, but also looks at the limitations of digital Bibles in their current forms. What new areas of research do the digital humanities open up for us?

    This contribution offers a new critical edition of the treatise De fide contra Manichaeos, a Latin anti-Manichaean tractate attributed to Evodius of Uzalis. The edition is the result of the study of all extant manuscripts of De fide, 30 in total. The introduction offers a thorough discussion of the textual transmission of De fide, in which I attempt to assess the relations between all manuscripts. De fide has been transmitted in three major branches, with one manuscript not pertaining to one particular branch of the transmission. The archetype of De fide appears to have contained a collection of seven African anti-heretical texts. In the introduction I also discuss previous editions of De fide, including the edition of the Maurists and the most recent edition of Zycha in the CSEL series. The main section of the contribution consists of the new critical edition, with three apparatuses: a biblical apparatus, an apparatus of Manichaean and apocryphal source texts, and a (negative) critical apparatus. The critical apparatus contains the textual variants of all manuscripts with the exception of the codices descripti. A facing translation in English, with additional footnotes, complements the Latin text. In a final section, I discuss several textual-critical choices in greater detail.

    The article offers the first complete edition of the Greek text of the Pseudo-Chrysostomic homily In illud : Ignem ueni (CPG 4669) and an editio princeps of the Old Armenian version of the sermon. The introduction ventures the analysis of seven Greek and four Armenian manuscripts which have been used for the edition ; the problems of the textual transmission on the Greek and Armenian soil are discussed. It is shown that the earlier edition of the Greek text by Savile was based on a copy of a contaminated witness of the text, whereas a complete form of the sermon survived in a number of manuscripts. Two of the Armenian manuscripts also present a contaminated redaction, which, however, is different from the Greek contaminated redaction. A French translation of the established critical text accompanies the publication.

    This article offers a personal perspective on religious history after the institutionalisation of this field in the History Department at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2015. In essence and method, religious history is like history of religion(s). In German and Dutch, one can speak of Religionsgeschichte or religiegeschiedenis/godsdienstgeschiedenis. Different terms are in use in English and French, reflecting the different traditions in the disciplines of theology and history. History of religion(s)/histoire des religions is commonly associated with comparative studies of (non-Christian) religions, while religious history/histoire religieuse developed as a specialisation within general history (mostly concerned with Christianity and therefore close to what is known as church history or ecclesiastical history). While understanding religious history as general history with a focus on the religious factor in cultural, social, and political realities, various research traditions should be converged and integrated by means of conceptual exchange, cross-disciplinary approaches, and linked scholarly networks. Given the interest in global dimensions and long-term developments, computer-assisted research of digitalised sources is recommended for doing religious history today.

    Incorporating digital tools into Religious Studies courses provides experiences and conditions that transform students into scholars. In this essay we discuss two courses we taught in conjunction with the Religious Soundmap Project of the Global Midwest, a collaborative digital humanities project that we co-directed from 2014 to 2016. Engaging students as contributors to a collaborative digital research project helped them to appreciate some of the key practical, theoretical, and ethical challenges that we face as scholars of religion. In particular, our work together brought to the fore critical questions about definition, classification, and representation. Even more, because they knew their work would be accessible to broader audiences outside the classroom, potentially including the very communities whom they were studying, students were able to perceive the stakes of these questions in ways we had not previously experienced. Incorporating digital tools enabled our students to see themselves as scholars of religion.

    The Center for the Study of Material and Visual Cultures of Religion at Yale University (MAVCOR) does not simply, or even most fundamentally, shape a physical center at Yale University. Although MAVCOR organizes events at Yale and coordinates project cycles involving Yale affiliates as well as scholars from other universities in the United States and around the world, much of MAVCOR's activity is conducted online. MAVCOR publishes a born-digital, open-access double-blind peer-reviewed journal, MAVCOR Journal. It also features a born-digital exhibition space, the Material Objects Archive. In at least two ways, MAVCOR is deliberately interstitial, invested in the connective spaces between both disciplines and technologies. First, the Center emerged from a desire to promote interdisciplinary conversation among scholars of religion, art history, anthropology, and others engaged with our subjects of inquiry. We have aimed to accomplish this goal by shaping a forum for conversation and an archive for mutual use. Second, MAVCOR engages the need to form a space for peer-reviewed content online in a manner that emphasizes the mutually beneficial relationship of print and digital modes of inquiry. In this work, MAVCOR's overarching commitment is to promote innovative, substantively researched, thoughtfully constructed scholarship, with robust interdisciplinarity as a fundamental element of form and content.

    This article is an experiment in digital methodology. It applies tools associated with the digital humanities to the study of Protestant evangelicalism in order to ask what digital research methods can offer the study of religion. Beginning with the development of a social media computer program called a Twitter bot designed to mimic evangelical ministers on twitter, the article considers how digital scholarship allows the work scholars produce to mirror more closely the religious worlds they study. Next, the article analyzes the results of the program using text analysis software. In documenting trends in the bot's output, the article highlights how digital research methods can help answer long-standing questions in the field as well as potentially ask new ones. It concludes, The article, then, is both an exploration of contemporary religious cultures and a consideration of new media methods for analyzing them.

    The article argues for a re-assessment of the widespread assumption that Friedrich Breckling should be considered the editor of the 1687/90 German edition of the works of the sixteenth-century “Familist” author Hiel. After discussing the evidence which had seemed to point towards such a role for Breckling, the article draws on unedited material to demonstrate that the Hiel edition should instead be ascribed to Loth Fischer. This sheds new light on the religious and intellectual attitudes of the heterodox Lutheran theologian Breckling. When compared to his contemporary Gottfried Arnold, Breckling not only questioned the contemporary boundaries of orthodoxy, but also re-negotiated them, integrating elements from older heterodox traditions.

    Literature is an important medium for representing and communicating world views and values. This article focuses on the representation of culture and religion and reveals constructions of identities in children's literature. The analysis of selected contemporary books from the German speaking area considers the representation of the main characters and their cultural and religious background as well as their faith and practices with a discourse analytical approach. The analysed narrations tend to specify difference by means of cultural and religious characteristics; instead of dissolving those categories, narrations strengthen them. The article states the importance of literature in the mediation of knowledge, self-concepts, interpersonal perceptions and normative paradigms.

    In source-critical studies the verse John 14,31 is a code text since Julius Wellhausen. It should illustrate that the following chapters John 15-17 are secondary additions or toned down as a relecture of the farewell scenes John 13,1-14,31. In this essay it will be attempted to read this verse in a philologically corrected way. The history of research since Hugo Grotius is reconstructed, too. Parallel the content of the first part of the farewell speech is reconstructed, recognizing that the so-called 'high christology' of John leads to a special ecclesiology, the definition of which is given in John 15,1-17. The 'high christology' and the 'sacred ecclesiology' together serve to strengthen a Christian house-church, which tries to exist outside the synagogue in a distrustful up to hostile Hellenistic Polis society. Its social situation has totally changed and therefore a missionary and ethical change of strategy is needed. The evangelist proposes on the basic of the Jesus tradition a new one, brotherly love as attractive way to continue the mission and to live the ethics of Jesus.

    Codex Bezae lacks the Greek text of Acts 10.4-14, but the Latin text survives on fol. 455a. Damage to the manuscript has caused traces of ink from the now-lost Greek text to be transferred onto the Latin page of Acts 10.4-14. They preserve a mirror image of text from fol. 454b, the facing page at the time of the damage. By reversing high-resolution images of fol. 455a with photo-editing software, the offset ink can be deciphered. As a result, the surviving Greek text from Acts 10.4-9 in Codex Bezae is published here for the first time.

    Luke's account of Martha and Mary of Bethany is present in the textual tradition in two versions. The majority of scholars and editors prefer the shorter reading, "only one thing is necessary." This view is also taken up by the influential UBS Committee, which regards the long reading as a conflation. This preference for the shorter reading is mistaken on several grounds. First, it builds on a factual error presupposing a reading that does not exist in the extant Greek textual tradition. Second, it neglects the history of interpretation and specifically its significance for the textual problem. Third, it is motivated at least in part by positing a dichotomy between the two sisters. In this article, I argue that the long reading in the passage in Luke 10:41-42, where Jesus replies to Martha that "few things are necessary, or indeed only one" is the initial text and the lectio difficilior, as well as the text that is best suited to its narrative context in Luke's Gospel.
