In a major new study of this 'Great Transition,' Bruce Campbell assesses the contributions of commercial recession, war, climate change, and eruption of the Black Death to a far-reaching reversal of fortunes from which no part of Eurasia was spared. The book synthesises a wealth of new historical, palaeo-ecological and biological evidence, including estimates of national income, reconstructions of past climates, and genetic analysis of DNA extracted from the teeth of plague victims, to provide a fresh account of the creation, collapse and realignment of Western Europe's late medieval commercial economy"-- 1.     "The Dutch Revolt (ca. 1572-1648) led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people. In Exile Memories and the Dutch Revolt, Johannes Müller shows how migrants and their descendants in the Dutch Republic, England and Germany cultivated their Netherlandish heritage for more than 200 years. Memories of war and persecution shaped new religious and political identities that combined images of suffering and heroism and served as foundational narratives of newcomers. Exposing the underlying narrative structures of early modern exile memories, this volume shows how stories about the Dutch Revolt allowed migrants to participate in their host societies rather than producing a closed and exclusive diaspora. Un constat objectif met en évidence que l'expédition de Bonaparte en Égypte possède un retentissement qui transcende le simple contexte opératif. Menée par un jeune général ambitieux et un pouvoir politique en difficulté, cet événement militaire agit comme un catalyseur de passions. Plus important pour ce qu'il représente dans l'inconscient collectif que pour des raisons strictement militaires, il a un véritable pouvoir sur les âmes de l'époque et de nos contemporains. Dans L'invention politique de l'événement, l'auteur souhaite montrer comment l'idéologie et la politique se nourrissent de l'événement original grâce à une reconstruction du fait historique par la propagande afin d'édifier une nouvelle structure de société. L'utilisation efficace et orientée de la représentation du fait historique rend possibles les conditions du changement politique. Réunies autour d'un événement au service de l'oeuvre politique, elles permettront alors à Bonaparte de devenir Napoléon"-- In a French society marked by the notions of memory and commemoration, it seems more than essential to study the relations that exist between 'War' and 'Society.' An objective observation shows that Bonaparte's expedition to Egypt had a repercussion that transcended the simple operative context. Led by an ambitious young general and a troubled political power, this military event acted as a catalyst for passions. More important for what it represents in the collective unconscious than for strictly military reasons, it has a real power over the souls of the time and our contemporaries. In the political invention of the event, the author wishes to show how ideology and politics fed on the original event by reconstructing the historical fact through propaganda in order to build a new structure of society. The efficient and directed use of the representations of historical facts makes possible the conditions of political change. Gathered around an event at the service of the political work, they will then allow Bonaparte to become Napoleon

    "In the middle of the sixth century the eastern Roman (Byzantine) empire was the largest state in western Eurasia. A century later it was a fraction of the size, its eastern provinces torn away by the early Islamic conquests in the middle of the seventh century. It had lost three-quarters of its lands and probably more of its tax revenues. How did it survive beyond the year 700 CE? Surrounded on all sides by challenges, most particularly from the dynamism and strength of the Islamic Caliphate, it should not have done: massively outnumbered and out-resourced, its territory repeatedly and continuously laid waste, its towns turned to fortresses, its population decimated by warfare and plague, even the capital, Constantinople, the largest city in the western world, besieged and threatened. Yet it did survive. By bringing together evidence for beliefs, identities and attitudes, administrative structures and the search for resources, the organization of its armies and the system of crisis management in its tax system, this book seeks to locate and describe the mechanisms of survival.     "Many of the wars of the late Republic were largely civil conflicts. There was, therefore, a tension between the traditional expectation that triumphs should be celebrated for victories over foreign enemies and the need of the great commanders to give full expression to their prestige and charisma, and to legitimize their power. Triumphs in the Age of Civil War rethinks the nature and the character of the phenomenon of civil war during the Late Republic. At the same time it focuses on a key feature of the Roman socio-political order, the triumph, and argues that a commander could in practice expect to triumph after a civil war victory if it could also be represented as being over a foreign enemy, even if the principal opponent was clearly Roman. Significantly, the civil aspect of the war did not have to be denied.
