This article is an experiment in digital methodology. It applies tools associated with the digital humanities to the study of Protestant evangelicalism in order to ask what digital research methods can offer the study of religion. Beginning with the development of a social media computer program called a Twitter bot designed to mimic evangelical ministers on twitter, the article considers how digital scholarship allows the work scholars produce to mirror more closely the religious worlds they study. Next, the article analyzes the results of the program using text analysis software. In documenting trends in the bot's output, the article highlights how digital research methods can help answer long-standing questions in the field as well as potentially ask new ones. It concludes, The article, then, is both an exploration of contemporary religious cultures and a consideration of new media methods for analyzing them.

"In recent years, Arab activists have confronted authoritarian regimes both on the street and online, leaking videos and exposing atrocities, and demanding political rights. Tarek El-Ariss situates these critiques of power within a pervasive culture of scandal and leaks and shows how cultural production and political change in the contemporary Arab world are enabled by digital technology yet emerge from traditional cultural models. Focusing on a new generation of activists and authors from Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula, El-Ariss connects WikiLeaks to The Arabian Nights, Twitter to mystical revelation, cyberattacks to pre-Islamic tribal raids, and digital activism to the affective scene-making of Arab popular culture. He shifts the epistemological and historical frameworks from the postcolonial condition to the digital condition and shows how new media challenge the novel as the traditional vehicle for political consciousness and intellectual debate. Theorizing the rise of "the leaking subject" who reveals, contests, and writes through chaotic yet highly political means, El-Ariss investigates the digital consciousness, virality, and affective forms of knowledge that jolt and inform the public and that draw readers in to the unfolding fiction of scandal. Leaks, Hacks, and Scandals maps the changing landscape of Arab modernity, or Nahda, in the digital age and traces how concepts such as the nation, community, power, the intellectual, the author, and the novel are hacked and recoded through new modes of confrontation, circulation, and dissent.""--

Offensive language in social media is a problem currently widely discussed. Researchers in language technology have started to work on solutions to support the classification of offensive posts. We present the pilot edition of the GermEval Shared Task on the Identification of Offensive Language. This shared task deals with the classification of German tweets from Twitter. GermEval 2018 is the fourth workshop in a series of shared tasks on German processing.

We present the pilot edition of the GermEval Shared Task on the Identification of Offensive Language. This shared task deals with the classification of German tweets from Twitter. It comprises two tasks, a coarse-grained binary classification task and a fine-grained multi-class classification task. The shared task had 20 participants submitting 51 runs for the coarse-grained task and 25 runs for the fine-grained task. Since this is a pilot task, we describe the process of extracting the raw-data for the data collection and the annotation schema. We evaluate the results of the systems submitted to the shared task. The shared task homepage can be found at projects.cai. fbi.h-da.de/iggsa/

In this rapidly changing, technologically advancing and globally networked world, the possibilities of expression for the young generation that are now available have never been as great as they are today. Internet and communication technologies have not only expanded the number of activities of youth, but also the number of ways in which these activities are carried out. Pakistan's youth are also being influenced by the recent wave of social media. Social media platforms offer their users many different and innovative ways to express themselves. Whether it's passive online expression, such as casually liking and sharing social media content, or active online expression, such as commenting, discussing, interfering in online political controversies, evaluating, reading, and forwarding blogs, both promote different levels and forms of civic and political engagement (Gil De Zúñiga et al., 2009; C. Vaccari et al., 2015). In addition, all political parties at the national level in Pakistan also have social media accounts and social media teams. Political parties and personalities use social media for political campaigns and to gain access to young voters, especially those who have previously turned away from politics (Tasenţe + Nicoleta, 2013). Social media is now an increasingly popular platform for bringing about lasting change in the political environment of any country, whether in the mobilization of political protest in Spain through social networks (Anduiza et al., 2014) or in the case of the movement of the Arab Spring (Breuer, 2012; Breuer et al., 2015). This study examines the phenomenon of political communication on Facebook and Twitter and its impact on the political mobilisation of young people in the context of political and social conditions in Pakistan. The data collected on various websites, which include surveys on social media users and on voter voting trends and their political participation, provide some clues to these phenomena and a solid foundation to address this research and test the ...
