    In Translating the World, Birgit Tautz provides a new narrative of German literary history in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Departing from dominant modes of thought regarding the nexus of literary and national imagination, she examines this intersection through the lens of Germany's emerging global networks and how they were rendered in two very different German cities: Hamburg and Weimar.German literary history has tended to employ a conceptual framework that emphasizes the nation or idealized citizenry, yet the experiences of readers in eighteenth-century German cities existed within the context of their local environments, in which daily life occurred and writers such as Lessing, Schiller, and Goethe worked. Hamburg, a flourishing literary city in the late eighteenth century, was eventually relegated to the margins of German historiography, while Weimar, then a small town with an insular worldview, would become mythologized for not only its literary history but its centrality in national German culture. By interrogating the histories of and texts associated with these cities, Tautz shows how literary styles and genres are born of local, rather than national, interaction with the world. Her examination of how texts intersect and interact reveals how they shape and transform the urban cultural landscape as they are translated and move throughout the world.A fresh, elegant exploration of literary translation, discursive shifts, and global cultural changes, Translating the World is an exciting new story of eighteenth-century German culture and its relationship to expanding global networks that will especially interest scholars of comparative literature, German studies, and literary history

    In einem disziplinären und exemplarischen Zugriff werden die übersetzungstheoretischen Ausführungen des deutschen Latinisten Manfred Fuhrmann (1925-2005) ins Zentrum gestellt sowie dessen Übertragungstätigkeit (v. a. die Reden Ciceros) als Teil der Vermittlung der Antike aufgearbeitet. Die Darstellung der Theoriegeschichte geht von den Äußerungen Fuhrmanns aus und erweitert sie. Schwerpunkt ist die Diskussion der Übersetzungstheorie ab der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Fuhrmanns Überlegungen werden daraufhin untersucht, inwieweit sie einen paradigmatischen Beitrag zur Theorie des Übersetzens im 20. Jahrhundert liefern und welche Systematisierungsvorschläge er für das Übersetzen antiker Literatur, speziell von Prosatexten, bietet. Mit der Frage nach Ausgangs- oder Zielsprachenorientierung wird zugleich diskutiert, welche Antike für die Gegenwart übersetzt, transformiert werden soll. Analysen der Cicero-Übersetzungen bieten konkretes Material für die Beantwortung der Frage, welcher Transformation Fuhrmann den antiken Redner unterzieht.

    Biographical note: Elke Teich teaches at the University of Saarland, Saarbrücken, Germany. The intuition that translations are somehow different from texts that are not translations has been around for many years, but most of the common linguistic frameworks are not comprehensive enough to account for the wealth and complexity of linguistic phenomena that make a translation a special kind of text. The present book provides a novel methodology for investigating the specific linguistic properties of translations. As this methodology is both corpus-based and driven by a functional theory of language, it is powerful enough to account for the multi-dimensional nature of cross-linguistic variation in translations and cross-lingually comparable texts.

Die Studie untersucht die Übersetzung fiktiver Stimmen in der Literatur anhand von deutschen und spanischen Originaltexten aus der ganzheitlichen Perspektive der Übertragung von Oralität. Untersucht werden acht Schlüsselwerke ? Geschichten, Romane und Theaterstücke ? aus den letzten 50 Jahren und deren Übersetzungen in andere Sprachen (Englisch, Französisch, Portugiesisch, Katalanisch und Rumänisch), um daraus die Redemittel und Elemente der Variationskette abzuleiten, mit denen Oralität im geschriebenen Text evoziert und simuliert wird. In this study, the rendering of verbal expression in the translation of fictitious voices in literature is viewed in its entirety on the basis of original German and Spanish texts. Eight key works, including stories, novels, and plays from the last fifty years and their translations into other languages, including English, French, Portuguese, Catalan and Rumanian, have been examined in order to deduce the means of verbal expression and the chain of variation elements that evoke and simulate orality in written text.

    Der Autor geht der Frage nach, welchen Qualitätsstandards ein zweisprachiges Fachwörterbuch entsprechen muß, das den Benutzer zum aktiven Gebrauch einer Fachsprache befähigen soll. Gegenstand des untersuchten Wörterbuchs ist die deutsch-französische Rechnungslegung. Ein solches Wörterbuch muß einen terminologisch verengten Begriff von Fachsprache überwinden und eine Brücke zur sogenannten 'Gemeinsprache' schlagen. In dem hier vorgelegten (meta-)lexikographischen 'Werkstattbericht' werden drei Qualitätskriterien untersucht, und zwar in Hinblick auf: 1. die Zusammenstellung des Korpus, 2. das 'Schneiden' der Kollokationen, 3. die Frage der Äquivalenz. The author inquires into the quality standards required for a two-language special-language dictionary to enable its users to make active use of the special language in question. The dictionary examined here is a lexicon of German-French accounting terms. In order to function, such a dictionary must transcend a terminologically restricted concept of special(ist) language and establish and reflect the links with so-called 'everyday' language. The (meta)lexicographic 'workshop report' presented here investigates three quality criteria: 1. the composition of the corpus, 2. the 'cut' of collocations, 3. the question of equivalence.

The present book provides a novel methodology for investigating the specific linguistic properties of translations.     Main description: Die Studie analysiert die wichtige Rolle, die Übersetzungen deutscher Lyrik für den französischen Literaturbetrieb in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts spielen. Im Kontext der allgemeinen Übersetzungsproblematik geht es weniger um die traditionelle Erforschung des Einflusses als um die Beschreibung, welche Übersetzer wann durch den bisher wenig beachteten Transfer von Themen, Motiven metrischen Formen etc. bedeutsam geworden sind. Main description: This study analyses the general significance of translation in the literary life of an epoch, a country and a language, and engages in particular with the status of German lyric poetry in French literature in the first half of the 19th century. In the wider context of a study of the problem of translation, the author enquires into the poetical affinity and relative synchronicity of Germany and France, and points the way to areas which have not yet been sufficiently researched, such as the significance of translations and translators for the development of French poetry. She goes beyond traditional research approaches into 0influence0 and sees translation as the vehicle for the transfer of motifs or forms, or of changes in metre.

    Was kennzeichnet die Form des Übersetzens von Literatur? Dieser Band gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über die zentralen Fragen der literarischen Übersetzung, mit denen sich Übersetzer_innen zwischen Deutsch und fünf slawischen Sprachen (Tschechisch, Polnisch, Slowenisch, Kroatisch, Ukrainisch) konfrontiert sehen. Die Beiträger_innen erörtern u.a. Phänomene der »kulturellen Übersetzung« und der »Interkulturalität« im ostmitteleuropäischen Kontext, den Einfluss von Machtverhältnissen auf die Übersetzung sowie Aspekte der Gesellschaftskritik in der Übersetzung. In sechs »Panoramen« werden zudem die aktuelle Situation und Hauptakteure der Literaturübersetzung in den genannten Ländern übersichtlich vorgestellt. Schamma Schahadat (Prof. Dr.), geb. 1961, lehrt slavische Literaturwissenschaft am Slavischen Seminar der Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen und leitet das EU-Projekt »TransStar Europa«. Stepán Zbytovsky (PhD), geb. 1977, ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für germanische Studien der Karls-Universität in Prag.
