    Regarded as the secondary source advocated by some scholars for this battle around Brunanburh in AD 937, Egil's Saga 'Skalla-Grimssonar' (collated c. AD 1242-3) becomes problematical when compared with literary, historic and archaeological evidence. Thus, this argument places the saga in a rather awkward position. In addressing the general veracity of this saga, allegedly 'written' by Snorri Sturluson in 1240/1 we must draw a comparison to distinguish reality from fiction. For this article highlights not only the questionable traditions of Egil fighting at Brunanburh but whether Snorri's interpretation was motivated by self-interest. More importantly, could other people have gathered together Snorri's notes and produced Egil's Saga? Doubts arise as to its authenticity as many scholars have previously expressed the differing literary anomalies within the narrative. Was the saga written by more than one person? Was it embellished by Snorri or others? Where did the Brunanburh traditions come from? Is it accurate enough to be used as a historic source - a factual reference? The author suggests this approach may identify the incongruities within this saga demonstrating a correct analysis

    L'Anonyme d'Oxyrhynchos avait donné un récit clair et dense des événements survenus en Grèce et en Asie durant la période qui l'intéressait, une vingtaine d'années environ. Mais il en est des fragments d'un texte comme de ceux d'une statue: il faut restituer les parties manquantes pour comprendre l'originalité de l'oeuvre en partie détruite par le temps, et on ne peut le faire qu'à partir d'autres répliques, heureusement conservées, des premiers travaux historiques, entièrement perdus, consacrés aux guerres qui aboutirent à la précaire «hégémonie thébaine». Il nous a donc paru indispensable de donner une traduction aussi exacte que possible d'un certain nombre de textes grecs et latins traitant les mêmes sujets que l'Anonyme. Le lecteur disposera ainsi d'un «dossier» thématique où il trouvera des éléments de comparaison et des informations complémentaires. Il pourra également prendre la mesure des déficiences de Xénophon

Italian and French Novellas in England -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index Using a comparative, feminist approach informed by English and Italian literary and theatre studies, this book investigates connections between Shakespearean comedy and the Italian novella tradition. Shakespeare’s comedies adapted the styles of wit, character types, motifs, plots, and other narrative elements of the novella tradition for the Elizabethan and Jacobean stage, and they investigated social norms and roles through a conversation carried out in narrative and drama. Arguing that Shakespeare’s comedies register the playwright’s reading of the novella tradition within the collaborative playmaking context of the early modern theatre, this book demonstrates how the comic vision of these plays increasingly valued women’s authority and consent in the comic conclusion. The representation of female characters in novella collections is complex and paradoxical, as the stories portray women not only in the roles of witty plotters and storytellers but also through a multifaceted poetics of enclosed spaces – including trunks, chests, caskets, graves, cups, and beds. The relatively open-ended rhetorical situation of early modern English theatre and the dialogic form and narrative material available in the novella tradition combine to help create the complex female characters in Shakespeare’s plays and a new form of English comedy
