    Abstract ; Aesthetics represent a major theme in K.W.F. Solger's (1780-1819) philosophical as well as philological intellectual development. Our work, based on his manuscripts and on the posthumous editions, will enlighten its genesis and reception between 1800 and 1830. After presenting the sources, we describe how these are connected to one another and which concepts they let prevail (notably symbol, tragedy and irony). His intellectual biography is then being drawn from a historical inquiry stressing out his role in the University of Berlin between 1811 and 1819. A comparison between the different types of texts available today will finally point out the literary stakes of a work that has been kept unfinished by its author and has been widely revised by its posthumous editors. This research is mainly based on correspondence and aims at pointing out Solger's relationships to his contemporaries in the Romantic and Idealistic Berlin.

Die Studien behandeln das Problem der Gegenstandskonstituierung, die Theorie des romantischen Dramas und Strukturen der romantischen Komödie; sie liefern autor- und werkzentrierte Deutungen (Novalis, Tieck, Brentano, Arnim, Eichendorff), Überlegungen zum dramengeschichtlichen Kontext (Schiller, Kleist) und zu Aspekten der Wirkungsgeschichte (Nestroy, Keller, Hofmannsthal, Pirandello)

    Main description: The volume assembles papers delivered at an international conference organized in 1999 to essay a rapprochement between Romantic drama and the latest concerns of research into Romanticism. Central to the joint endeavour is the appropriate appreciation of a generic constellation frequently neglected in comparison with the contemporary 'classical' tradition, a constellation whose specific constitutive features call for adequate perspectivization in terms of literary history. The studies address the problem of the constitution of subject-matter, the theory of Romantic drama, and structures in Romantic comedy. They comprise interpretations centering on works and authors (Novalis, Tieck, Brentano, Arnim, Eichendorff), consideration of the historical context of the dramas (Schiller, Kleist) and of aspects of the history of their impact (Nestroy, Keller, Hofmannsthal, Pirandello)

    Seit den frühen Schriftzeugnissen ist die religiöse Erfahrung ein zentraler Topos. Ihre vielfältigen Formen und Funktionen kennzeichnen nicht nur kosmologische und prophetische Texte, sondern ebenso philosophische Dialoge sowie Epos, Drama und Lyrik. In der Romantik markieren Form und Funktion von religiösen Erfahrungen eine ideengeschichtliche Zäsur, die für die ästhetische Moderne konstitutiv ist. Deren Auswirkungen widmet sich die hier vorliegende Studie anhand der systematischen Analyse von Epiphanien in deutschsprachiger Prosa der Romantik und der 1920er bis 1950er Jahre. Dabei zeigt sich, dass traditionelle und aufklärerische Darstellungsverfahren religiöser Erfahrungen sowie die Sakralisierung von Profanem ineinandergreifen. Epiphanien sind gerade im Ausgang von individuellen sowie historischen Krisenerfahrungen Ausdruck der literarästhetischen Herstellung und Reflexion sakraler Deutungsschemata

Manche Texte Eichendorffs gelten gemeinhin als ›ausinterpretiert‹, andere Texte stoßen bei germanistischen Rezipientinnen und Rezipienten auf Zurückhaltung - auch derjenigen, die Eichendorff nicht für einen randständigen Romantiker, sondern für ein Schwergewicht der deutschen Literatur halten. Der Band plädiert mit Nachdruck für eine erneute Auseinandersetzung mit Eichendorffs Œuvre. Dazu richtet er einerseits den Blick auf Texte, für die sich die Forschung bisher nur selten interessiert hat, andererseits unternimmt er den Versuch, auch häufig interpretierte Texte und Topoi einer Revision zu unterziehen

    Fusing the methods of comparative literature, intellectual history, and philosophical analysis, Harold Skulsky explores a motif that has fascinated storytellers since antiquity: the miraculous transformation of a character into a plant, an animal, or a different human being. The thesis of the study is that the fantasy of metamorphosis challenges the narrator and his audience to confront certain basic anxieties about the human condition: Is the mind reducible to physical properties? What constitutes personhood? How does physical form affect personal identity and continuity of the self? Testing instances in which these and related perplexities appear in literature, Skulsky systematically and provocatively interprets ten major illustrative texts drawn from diverse epochs and languages, including the works of Homer, Ovid, Apuleius, Marie de France, Dante, Donne, Spenser, Keats, Kafka, and Woolf. Through Skulsky's masterly analysis the victims of metamorphosis in narrative literature--whether werewolf, ass, beetle, swine, or tree--provide a profound insight into the complexities of human experience

    Already in the nineteenth century, German-language writers were contending with the challenge of imagining and accounting for a planet whose volatility bore little resemblance to the images of the Earth then in circulation. The Geological Unconscious traces the withdrawal of the lithosphere as a reliable setting, unobtrusive backdrop, and stable point of reference for literature written well before the current climate breakdown.Through a series of careful readings of romantic, realist, and modernist works by Tieck, Goethe, Stifter, Benjamin, and Brecht, Groves elaborates a geological unconscious—unthought and sometimes actively repressed geological knowledge—in European literature and environmental thought. This inhuman horizon of reading and interpretation offers a new literary history of the Anthropocene in a period before it was named.These close readings show the entanglement of the human and the lithic in periods well before the geological turn of contemporary cultural studies. In those depictions of human-mineral encounters, the minerality of the human and the minerality of the imagination become apparent.     Main description: The volume assembles papers delivered at an international conference organized in 1999 to essay a rapprochement between Romantic drama and the latest concerns of research into Romanticism. Central to the joint endeavour is the appropriate appreciation of a generic constellation frequently neglected in comparison with the contemporary 'classical' tradition, a constellation whose specific constitutive features call for adequate perspectivization in terms of literary history. The studies address the problem of the constitution of subject-matter, the theory of Romantic drama, and structures in Romantic comedy.     Main description: This work advances the thesis that the symbolism of the ancient mysteries was of central significance for the self-interpretation of the early generation of German Romantics. Literary works and writings on the theory of art by Schlegel, Schleiermacher, Novalis, Loeben and Eichendorff draw upon this source to outline an exclusive form of 'knowledge' that is neither mythodological nor general and can only be communicated by special modes of discourse. The resulting form of intellectual identity formation is interpreted here as a reaction to modernization processes taking shape in society and in the communication of knowledge. With a view of doing justice to the connotative richness of these Romantic writings, there are also detailed chapters on Antiquity and the immediate wellsprings of Romantic self-interpretation to be found in German Enlightenment thinking
