    "In Johann Froben, Printer of Basel, Valentina Sebastiani offers a comprehensive account of the life and printing production of Froben, a major representative of early modern Europe's most refined printing traditions. Some five centuries after they first appeared in print, Sebastiani provides a bibliography of the 329 Froben editions published in Basel between 1491 and 1527 (including an analysis of some 2,500 copies held in more than twenty-five libraries worldwide), listing the paratextual and visual elements that distinguish Froben's books as well as economic, technical, and editorial details related to their production and distribution. Sebastiani's study sheds new light on Froben's family and career, his involvement in the editing and publication of Erasmus's works, and the strategies he adopted to market them successfully"-- Part 1.     The Bern Disputation of 1528 was both the response to the Baden Disputation of 1526 and its continuation. From a formal perspective, the Baden served as a model for the Bernese. However, with respect to the printing of the disputation acts, this model needed to be improved upon as the delayed and flawed Lucerne edition of the Baden acts had led to justified doubts about the reliability of its protocol. In Bern, the four parallel transcripts of their disputation written under the direction of city secretary Peter Cyro were first collated before being delivered to the printer Christoph Froschauer in Zurich by one of the notaries charged with supervising the production of the complete edition. As a result of close cooperation between the typesetter and two theologically educated proofreaders, and under the eyes of Zwingli, a quarto edition appeared on March 23, 1528, almost two months after the Bern disputation and in time for the Frankfurt Book Fair. It was followed exactly one month later by an octavo edition.

    "This book surveys a neglected set of sources, German plague prints and treatises published between 1473 and 1573, in order to explore the intertwined histories of plague, print, medicine and religion during the Reformation era. It argues that a particularly German reform of healing flourished in printed texts during the Renaissance and Reformation as physicians and clerics devised innovative responses to the era's persistent epidemics. These reforms are 'German' since they reflect the innovative trends that originated in or were particularly strong within German-speaking lands, including the rapid growth of vernacular print, Protestantism, and new interest in alchemy and the native plants of Northern Europe that were unknown to the ancients. Their reforms are also 'German' in the sense that they unfolded mainly in vernacular print, which encouraged physicians to produce local knowledge, grounded in personal experience and local observations as much as universal theories. This book contributes to the history of medicine and science by tracing the growth of more empirical forms of medical knowledge. It also contributes to the history of the Renaissance and Reformation by uncovering the innovative contributions of various forgotten physicians.     With the rise of digital technology as a design tool and its acceptance as simply part of the tool chest for today's design studios, there has been a re-evaluation and return to exploring pre-digital typography. Design studios no longer flaunt their digital hardware, in fact quite the opposite. This attitudinal change toward digital technology has coincided with a growing fascination and re-evaluation of those pre-digital skills and processes that had been considered in recent years to be irrelevant. Mapping the rise of digital technology and examining the infinite possibilities it offers and the profound cultural and technical influence it has had in all aspects of visual communication.     Nur ca. 100 Jahre währte die Blütezeit der Blockbücher in Mitteleuropa. Wie die Inkunabel tauchte es erstmals um die Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts auf und dokumentiert damit eine Experimentierphase der Medien- und Drucktechnikgeschichte. Letztendlich konnte sich das Blockbuch in seiner ursprünglichen Form jedoch nicht durchsetzen, weshalb seine kulturgeschichtliche Bedeutung lange Zeit meist zu gering bewertet wurde. In dem die Funktionen, Gebrauchssituationen, Nutzungsräume und die mediengeschichtliche Rolle des Blockbuchs untersucht und hinterfragt werden, leistet diese Arbeit einen Beitrag zur Neubewertung dieses frühen Buchmediums.

King reveals how four crucial new genres--the newspaper, the periodical, the novel, and the biography--are united by their reliance on letters to accustom readers to new forms of print. She introduces the concept of a "bridge genre" to explain the role that the letter played in helping form these new genres and initiate readers into using them. Since readers were familiar with reading letters, this borrowing of epistolary forms and techniques allowed easier access to these new modes of printing and reading texts. This original and groundbreaking work in media and literary history offers a model for the process of genre formation: new genres arise when new media become accessible and intelligible to a mass readership. The bridge genre allowed people to see themselves as connected by networks of communication--as members of what they called "the world" of writing. This phrase, which became ubiquitous as authors analyzed their literary marketplace, implied both global scope and what we would now term a "media environment." In order to recuperate its eighteenth-century meaning, King combines techniques of book history, constituting extensive original archival research, with those of genre theory and literary analysis. The multiple "rises" that scholars have documented in this period--of print, the public sphere, the novel, and the newspaper--converged on a pervasive, but overlooked, strategy: the use of the letter to collect, present, and distribute information"--

Through an analysis of the often overlooked contributions of bookmen like Thomas Hacket, Richard Smith, and Paul Linley, Kirk Melnikoff tracks the crucial role that bookselling publishers played in transmitting literary texts into print as well as energizing and shaping a new sphere of vernacular literary activity The volume provides an overview of the full range of practices that publishers performed, including the acquisition of copy and titles, compiling, alteration to texts, reissuing, and specialization. Four case studies together consider links between translation and the travel narrative; bookselling and authorship; re-issuing and the Ovidian narrative poem; and specialization and professional drama. Works considered include Shakespeare's 'Hamlet', Thévet's 'The new found world', Constable's 'Diana', and Marlowe's 'Dido, Queen of Carthage'. Over time, the loss of these books has presented a significant barrier to our understanding of the past. The monopoly of the Stationers’ Company centralised book production in England to London with printing jobs carried out by members documented in a Register.     Reformation and printing belong together in Zurich from the very beginning. Apart from the fact that Froschauer and Zwingli were personally close, all the important Reformation imprints of Zurich, as well as dozens of Bibles and Bible parts, were printed by him. With about 760 prints Froschauer is one of the big names in the German-speaking world of publishing. He has printed not only Theologica but also many textbooks and groundbreaking illustrated works. Unfortunately only few handwritten documents have been preserved by Froschauer himself. All the more exciting are the correspondences of various scholars and reformers, which contain a wealth of information about Froschauer and 16th century printing. They not only shed light on Froschauer's character, but also on the print-runs, the daily production volume of a printing house, the wage structure and the collaboration with the authors.

    The Zurich woodcut illustrations of the early Reformation show a typical spectrum for the use of images in book printing. Unlike in centres such as Wittenberg or Basel, Zurich's early book illustrations have not been influenced by dominant artists of the period such as Lukas Cranach the Elder or Hans Holbein the Younger. Although Christoph Froschauer occasionally commissioned Holbein to create illustrations for prints made in Zurich, most of the early woodblocks used in Zurich are created by anonymous artists. Nevertheless, the printers in Zurich, above all Christoph Froschauer and Hans Hager, convincingly used the available woodblocks to illustrate their broadsheets, pamphlets and books. They drew on local traditions of the 15th century and often used incunabula illustrations. Among the various text genres of the time, a group of polemical prints stand out, in which woodcuts are effectively employed to fight for the cause of the Reformation. In Zurich, a simple but particularly convincing layout was developed to create a typical local appearance for the title pages of Zwingli's publications that had a high and marketable recognition potential.

    Without printing press, no Reformation, this insight was emphasised already by contemporaries. Basel's share in the written, printed diffusion of the new ideas in the early years of the Reformation was considerable. The first omnibus of Luther's works was printed in Basel in 1518. Basel editions triggered the inner-protestant controversy over the Lord's Supper. The Basel printers promoted the Reformation by erudite disputes and commentaries in Latin and by sermons and liturgies in vernacular. But that was not all. They also printed witty and often unashamed pamphlets in the vernacular with bold illustrations. Yet although the output of Reformation-printing in Basel was substantial, it must be seen in the wider context of the humanistic movement and the respective print production. Seen in this light, the more strictly reformation related print production is dwarfed by the humanist works that accounted for more than a half - actually about three fifths of the overall print production in Basel in the Twenties, while about one third promoted the Reformation.

    This article links profits from the rich literature in the fields of Reformation history and book-history in order to analyse the relation between printing and the Reformation in Geneva from 1478 to 1600 in a general historian's perspective. Although various genres of religious and literary (illustrated) books have been printed for a local market since 1478, texts with evangelical tendency have not been produced in Geneva before 1536. Therefore, the ideas of Reformation were rather introduced by evangelical preachers than by the printing press. But after that Geneva became the centre of protestant or better: Calvinist printed propaganda in French (and Latin) until the early 1560s. Because of changing political contexts - French wars of Religion and the comeback of the Duke of Savoy as a neighbour - and the emerging of reformed printing in France forced Geneva to redirect their production towards more learned and non-religious books in Latin (humanism, classical authors, science). Nether the less, the production of (Genevan) Bibles and texts of Calvin and his followers and successors did not cease.

    Printing and the Reformation challenged book censorship in a new dimension. The Swiss confederates did not simply adopt the papal and imperial politics of censorship but discussed own solutions, which were subsequently implemented by the particular governments in their own interests. Committees of censorships were established within the protestant cities of Zurich, Basle and Berne for proving texts before printing. This official measure was intended to avoid conflicts with other governments and to guarantee domestic peace as well. The practice however was somehow fragmentary, mainly before the middle of the 16th century. Numerous complaints were made, prominently by the catholic confederates. The complaining party demanded usually to sequester the controversial publications and to punish the accused printers and authors as a restoration of the violated honour. The Swiss Diet served repeatedly as a mediation body in settling these conflicts. The city authorities conducted investigations against printers and authors, who violated the censorship rules. Unlike printing, the authorities of the protestant cities rarely controlled bookselling, whereas the catholic governments forbade trade and possession of protestant literature. In accordance with these strict regulations they confiscated frequently forbidden books and had them burnt by the executioner.
