    Just as today’s embrace of the digital has sparked interest in the history of print culture, so in eighteenth-century Britain the dramatic proliferation of print gave rise to urgent efforts to historicize different media forms and to understand their unique powers. And so it was, Paula McDowell argues, that our modern concepts of oral culture and print culture began to crystallize, and authors and intellectuals drew on older theological notion of oral tradition to forge the modern secular notion of oral tradition that we know today. Drawing on an impressive array of sources including travel narratives, elocution manuals, theological writings, ballad collections, and legal records, McDowell re-creates a world in which everyone from fishwives to philosophers, clergymen to street hucksters, competed for space and audiences in taverns, marketplaces, and the street. She argues that the earliest positive efforts to theorize "oral tradition," and to depict popular oral culture as a culture (rather than a lack of culture), were prompted less by any protodemocratic impulse than by a profound discomfort with new cultures of reading, writing, and even speaking shaped by print. Challenging traditional models of oral versus literate societies and key assumptions about culture’s ties to the spoken and the written word, this landmark study reorients critical conversations across eighteenth-century studies, media and communications studies, the history of the book, and beyond.

    This book considers what was written, printed, published, owned and sometimes read in Ireland between 1680 and 1784. It seeks to evaluate the ephemeral and what has subsequently vanished in order to challenge some common assumptions about the nature and impact of print during the period. It is based on the surviving texts and the letters and comments of contemporaries. Peopled with authors, publishers and readers, it offers a novel approach to the history of the book in Ireland. Also, it places print in the mental and material cultures of the eighteenth century, and among the efforts to subordinate Ireland more firmly to England. It suggests how enthusiastically Ireland plunged into the cultural currents of the eighteenth century - cosmopolitan rather than introverted and insular

    Kostbare Erzeugnisse des Augsburger Buchdrucks gehören zwar zu den gerne präsentierten Schätzen der grossen Bibliotheken und zu den Glanzpunkten in den Katalogen führender Antiquariate, in Augsburg selbst jedoch gab es bisher keine Ausstellung, welche die Erzeugnisse des frühesten Augsburger Buchdrucks in den Mittelpunkt gestellt hat. Allein die reichen Bestände der Augsburger Bibliotheken, insbesondere der Staats- und Stadtbibliothek sowie der Universitätsbibliothek, ermöglichen die Vermittlung eines vollständigen Bilds vom Augsburger Inkunabeldruck, ohne dass weitere Leihgaben ausserstädtischer Institutionen nötig wären.0Bereits in Gutenbergs Todesjahr 1468 erschien das erste in Augsburg gedruckte Buch. Augsburg trat damals überregional vor allem mit dem Druck von Bibeln und Erbauungsliteratur in der Volkssprache hervor. Besondere Bedeutung ist dem Buchschmuck dieser Drucke beizumessen, denn auch hier war Augsburg weithin führend sowohl im Bereich des beigedruckten Holzschnitts als auch in der Verzierung der Drucke durch Miniaturen. 0Mit der Präsentation der typographischen und buchkünstlerischen Meisterwerke der Inkunabelzeit, also der Zeit bis 1500, will die Ausstellung die Tradition des Augsburger Buchdrucks der breiteren Öffentlichkeit nahebringen. Augsburg gehörte neben Köln, Nürnberg, Frankfurt am Main und Leipzig zu den fünf führenden Buchzentren des Alten Reiches, was wesentlich zur Formung des kulturgeschichtlichen Profils der Stadt beigetragen hat.00Exhibition: Diözesanmuseum St. Afra, Augsburg, Germany (10.03.-18.06.2017)

    Denis Janot is the prime example of a vernacular printer espousing the highest standards of French Renaissance printing, highly influential in the adoption of roman type to the printing of vernacular material, and a key figure in the development of book illustration.00This bibliography, a comprehensive revison of the author?s Warwick Ph.D. thesis of 1976, listing 391 editions (41 more than the original version), is based firmly on the description of Janot?s books. Some 1300 copies have been examined, about 80% of the known total. Alongside the bibliography there is an description of Janot?s printing material (including an index of more than 1000 woodcuts), and some analysis of the subjects of his publications

In this book, historian Frédéric Barbier provides an important new economic, political and social analysis of the first great 'media revolution' in the West: Gutenberg's invention of the printing press in the mid fifteenth century. In great detail and with a wealth of historical evidence, Barbier charts the developments in manuscript culture in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and shows how the steadily increasing need for written documents initiated the processes of change which culminated with Gutenberg. The fifteenth century is presented as the 'age of start-ups' when investment and research into technologies that were new at the time, including the printing press, flourished.     "Why were seventeenth-century antiquarians so spectacularly wrong? Even if they knew what ancient monuments looked like, they deliberately distorted the representation of them in print. Deciphering the printed reconstructions of Giacomo Lauro and Athanasius Kircher, this pioneer study uncovers an antiquity born with print culture itself and from the need to accommodate competitive publishers, ambitious patrons, and powerful popes. By analyzing the elements of fantasy in Lauro and Kircher's archaeological visions new levels of meaning appear. Instead of being testimonies of failed archaeology, they emerge as complex architectural messages responding to moral, political, and religious issues of the day. This book combines several histories--print, archaeology, architecture--in the attempt to identify early modern strategies of recovering lost Rome.
