    With "Negerplastik" ("Escultura Negra" in portuguese) the Santa Catarina University Press publishes the first book by Carl Einstein (1885-1940) edited in Brazil. In this context and doing justice to the nowadays important relation between art and political action, this article presents information in multidisciplinary perspective about the artist/writer, the translation of "Negergebet" and "Drei Negerlieder", considering the relevance of African arts and literature in Einstein's work, as well as a reading guide tuned and useful in order to understand his work. A Editora da UFSC publica o ensaio "Negerplastik" ("Escultura Negra") de Carl Einstein (1885-1940), autor até então inédito no Brasil. No ensejo e em vista da premência atual do vínculo arte e ação política, este artigo apresenta informações multidisciplinares referentes à atuação do escritor/artista, inclusive a tradução para o português da "Negergebet" ("Prece Africana") e das "Drei Negerlieder" ("Três Canções Africanas") devidas à relevância da literatura e das artes africanas no trabalho legado por Einstein, bem como um mapa de leituras afinadas e úteis à compreensão de seu trabalho. Mit "Negerplastik" ("Escultura Negra" auf Portugiesisch) stellt der Verlag der Bundesuniversität von Santa Catarina die erste in Brasilien veröffentlichte Arbeit Carl Einsteins (1885-1940) vor. Aus diesem Anlass und um die heute als vorrangig empfundene Beziehung zwischen Kunst und politischer Aktion Rechnung zu tragen, stellt dieser Artikel multidisziplinär hergeleitete Informationen über Carl Einstein zur Verfügung - nebst der portugiesischen Übersetzung von "Negergebet" ("Prece Africana") und "Drei Negerlieder" ("Três Canções Africanas"). Dies geschieht angesichts der Bedeutung von Literatur und afrikanischer Kunst im Werk Einsteins, deren Beziehung sich durch diese Informationen eher erschließen mag.

    O objetivo do presente artigo é apresentar alguns aspectos teóricos postulados pelo escritor alemão Alfred Döblin em seus ensaios ao desenvolver sua própria concepção da obra épica na "era da técnica" à luz de questões estilísticas, propondo conceitos como "estilo cinematográfico", "despersonalização", "fantasia factual" e "fantasia cinética". Para uma delimitação conceitual em relação à noção de "estilo", serão tomadas por base as considerações de Antoine Compagnon, postuladas na obra "O demônio da teoria" (1999), bem como as reflexões de Walter Benjamin, presents na resenha "A crise do romance" (1930) e no ensaio "O narrador" (1936). ; The aim of this paper is to present some theoretical aspects, postulated by German writer Alfred Döblin in his essays, as he developed his own conception of the epic work in "the technical era", based on stylistic aspects, proposing concepts such as "film style", "depersonalization", "factual fantasy" and "kinetic fantasy". As a basis for a conceptual definition concerning the notion of "style", this paper takes into account Antoine Compagnon´s arguments in the work "Literature, theory and common sense" (1998), as well as Walter Benjamin's reflections presented in the review "The crisis of the novel" (1930) and the essay "The Storyteller" (1936). ; Ziel dieses Beitrags ist, einige theoretische Aspekte zu präsentieren, die Alfred Döblin in seinen Essays bei der Entwicklung seiner eigenen Auffassung vom epischen Werk im "technischen Zeitalter" im Lichte von stilistischen Fragen verfasst, sowie Begriffe wie "Kinostil", "Depersonation", "Tatsachenphantasie" und "kinetische Phantasie" postuliert hat. Für die genaue Erörterung des "Stil" Begriffs werden die Betrachtungen Antoine Compagnons im Buch "Le démon de la théorie" (1998), wie auch die Überlegungen Walter Benjamins in der Rezension "Krisis des Romans" (1930) und im Essay "Der Erzähler" (1936) als Grundlagen genommen.

    Mais do que um princípio formal, a noção de ensaísmo de Robert Musil adquire o duplo estatuto de uma "utopia" e de uma atitude diante da realidade. É esse duplo viés que permitirá à arte preservar-se como potência crítica e epistemológica num contexto de crise cultural e de valores na Europa no início do XX. Este artigo aborda a noção de ensaísmo de Musil a partir de seus textos críticos e de seu romance "O homem sem qualidades", demonstrando como as idéias expostas no registro estritamente "ensaístico" se configuram no âmbito da representação poética, consumando assim a "utopia" pretendida pelo autor, de fundar novas relações entre as esferas da razão e do sentimento, da ciência e da arte, da objetividade e da subjetividade. ; Robert Musil's essayism concept is more than a formal principle: in his work this concept becomes at the same time a "utopia" and an attitude towards reality. This double aspect allows the art to preserve its critical and episthemological power in a European crisis context at the beginning of the 20th century. This paper deals with Musil's essayism in his critical essays and in his novel, "Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften", pointing out how the essayistic ideas are outlined in the poetical representation, showing how one of the aspects of Musils "utopia" takes effect through the foundation of a new relation between reason and feeling, science and art, objectivity and subjectivity. ; Bei Robert Musil gilt der Begriff des Essayismus nicht nur als formales Prinzip, sondern auch und vielmehr als eine "Utopie" und eine Haltung gegenüber der Wirklichkeit. Dieser doppelte Ansatz des Essayismus erlaubt der Kunst, ihre kritische und ephystemologische Macht zu bewahren gerade in diesem Krisen-Kontext Europas zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Dieser Aufsatz behandelt den Essayismus-Begriff Musils von seinen kritischen Texten und seinem Roman "Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften" ausgehend, um zu zeigen, wie sich die in Essays entwickelten Ideen im Bereich der Dichtung gestalten.     Neste ensaio, pretendo empreender uma análise comparativa entre os modos como o intelectual alemão Georg Simmel e o escritor estadunidense Henry James figuram discursivamente aquilo que Simmel chama de "a tragédia da cultura". Em ensaios escritos na virada do século XX, como "As Grandes Cidades e a Vida do Espírito" (1903), "Do Ser da Cultura" (1908) e "O Conceito e a Tragédia da Cultura" (1911), Simmel trata do conceito tipicamente alemão de cultura ('Kultur'), identificando sua dimensão trágica. Conquanto Henry James mostre-se, especialmente no período da 1ª Guerra Mundial, fortemente comprometido com o ideal inglês de "civilização", pode-se notar, em seus relatos de viagem da virada do século, intitulados "The American Scene" (1907), uma compreensão semelhante à de Simmel da moderna experiência da tragédia da cultura. ; I intend to undertake, in this essay, a comparative analysis between the ways the German intellectual Georg Simmel and the American writer Henry James represent what Simmel calls "the tragedy of culture". In essays written at the turn of the 20th century, such as "The Metropolis and Mental Life" (1903), "On the essence of culture" (1908), and "The Concept and Tragedy of Culture" (1911), Simmel presents the typically German concept of culture ('Kultur'), identifying its tragic dimension. Although Henry James shows himself, especially during World War I, strongly committed to the English ideal of "civilization", it is possible to observe, in his turn-of-the-century travel accounts, "The American Scene" (1907), an understanding similar to Simmel's of the modern experience of the tragedy of culture.

    Abordando o conjunto das chamadas "peças de fala" ("Sprechstücke"), as primeiras quatro obras escritas para o teatro ainda nos anos 60 por Peter Handke, Prêmio Nobel de Literatura de 2019, o ensaio busca localizar nelas mais do que o jogo autorreferencial alienado censurado por muitos num suposto pós-modernismo. Relacionando o projeto do autor com uma tradição modernista propriamente austríaca e com as preocupações de uma possível filosofia política da linguagem, investigamos essa dramaturgia como uma operação crítica em relação a um funcionamento coercitivo da linguagem, para ao fim relacionar esse interesse com sua posição na história do teatro, propondo seu papel chave para compreender a cena contemporânea. ; Addressing the set of so-called 'spoken plays" or "speech plays" ("Sprechstücke"), the first four works written for the theater in the 1960s by Peter Handke, 2019 Nobel Prize for Literature, the essay seeks to locate in them more than the alienated self-referential game condemned by many in a supposed postmodernism. Relating the author's project with a properly Austrian modernist tradition and with the concerns of a possible political philosophy of language, we investigate his playwriting as a critical operation in relation to the coercive function of language, in order to finally relate this interest to its position in theater history, proposing its key role in understanding the contemporary scene.

    Dada a posição excêntrica de Hermann Hesse dentro da literatura de língua alemã no século XX, quase como um "outsider" retrógrado, o objetivo do presente artigo é tentar situar "O lobo da estepe" (1927) nas discussões sobre a "modernidade literária". Para esse fim, serão realizadas considerações que demonstram como o livro representa um sujeito no contexto do mundo moderno dos anos 1920 e como o romance adota uma estrutura multiperspectiva que reflete os novos modos de representação que começaram a ser explorados na forma literária moderna. Essa estrutura será analisada com base nas categorias narratológicas propostas por Genette (1995), apontando as três diferentes perspectivas sobre o protagonista Harry Haller presentes no livro: a do "Prefácio do editor", "As Anotações de Harry Haller" e o "Tratado do lobo da estepe". A partir da análise, discutir-se-á a possibilidade de entender os acontecimentos narrados nas "Anotações”"como frutos da imaginação ou como depoimento autobiográfico do protagonista. No primeiro caso, o livro se encaixaria na categoria do realismo, no segundo, na literatura fantástica. Por fim, serão comparadas as diversas edições do livro - que apresentam diferenças significativas - de modo a evidenciar como a estrutura narrativa pode favorecer a classificação do romance como fantástico. ; Given Hermann Hesse's eccentric position within German-language literature of the 20th century, almost as a retrograde "outsider", the purpose of this article is try to situate "Steppenwolf" (1927) in the discussions about "literary modernity".
