    Dieser Artikel behandelt den österreichischen Autor Adolf Dessauer (1849-1916), einen Chronisten der Wiener Sitten der Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert. Von Beruf Bankier und Schriftsteller aus Liebhaberei, veröffentlichte Dessauer zwei Romane ("Götzendienst", 1896 und "Großstadtjuden", 1910), die zu Zeiten rasanter wirtschaftlicher und sozialer Wandlungen in der Habsburger Metropole spielen und die heute nahezu vergessen sind. Dessauer richtet seine Aufmerksamkeit auf die Klasse, die mit dem Siegeszug des Wirtschaftsliberalismus aufgestiegen und sich immer mehr mit der dekadenten Aristokratie der österreichischen Hauptstadt verbunden hatte, deren Geschmack und Umgangsformen sie nachahmte. Im Unterschied zu anderen europäischen Nationen schuf das Bürgertum des Habsburger Reiches kein eigenständiges kulturelles oder ästhetisches Repertoire, sondern versuchte, sich auf dem Wege der Imitation die kulturellen Werte des Adels anzueignen, was eine Klasse von Nachahmern hervorrief, auf die Dessauer seinen durchdringenden und ironischen Blick richtete. Gleichzeitig zeigt Dessauer, wie die Partei der antisemitischen Christdemokraten in Österreich unter der Schicht der Handwerker ihre Wähler rekrutierte, die im Zuge der neuen wirtschaftlichen Ordnung proletarisiert wurden: An diese verarmten Handwerker richtet sich die von Dr. Karl Lueger geführte Kampagne, der den Wirtschaftsliberalismus mit dem Judentum und den Juden identifizierte. In "Großstadtjuden" beschäftigt sich der Autor mit denselben Erscheinungen, jedoch aus einem streng jüdischen Blickwinkel, der ausgeht von einigen Familien und der Art, wie jede von ihnen auf den wachsenden Antisemitismus in der österreichischen Hauptstadt reagiert. Im Rückblick stellt sich die Geschichte der österreichischen Juden, zu jener Zeit die nach Warschau zweitgrößte Gemeinde in Europa, in diesem Roman als ein Vorspiel der Geschichte der Juden Europas im 20. Jahrhundert dar, was diesem literarischen Werk, das zum Vergessen verurteilt schien, ein unerwartetes Interesse verschafft. This article takes a new look at the novels of the Austrian Jewish writer Adolf Dessauer (1849-1916). Dessauer wrote an ironic chronicle of his contemporaries' world in turn-of-the-century Vienna. A banker by profession and an amateur novelist, he published two novels in his lifetime ("Götzendienst", in 1896, and "Großstadtjuden", in 1910), both taking place in the Habsburg capital, which was then undergoing a process of rapid economic and social change. Though his books are nowadays virtually forgotten, Dessauer was a very accurate chronicler of the customs of the social class which ascended with economic liberalism, and which became increasingly close to the empire's declining aristocracy, mimicking its tastes and habits. As opposed to what happened in other European nations, the bourgeoisie in the Habsburg Empire never attempted to construct its own aesthetic and cultural repertoire, but consistently imitated the aristocratic patterns of its time. Dessauer makes a biting and ironical portrait of this class and its attempt at aristocratic appearances. He also shows how Karl Lueger's Christian anti-Semitic party in Austria recruited its voters from the impoverished class of artisans, which had lost space as a consequence of the establishment of a new economic order. Lueger's political campaign was directed towards this growing class, and he identified the rise of liberal capitalism with Jews and Judaism. In "Großstadtjuden" Dessauer looks at the same phenomena, but does so from a strictly Jewish point of view. His second novel portrays the reactions of a number of Jewish families from Vienna to rising anti-Semitism. This historical aspect of the Viennese Jewish community, which was Europe's numerically largest after Warsaw's, is a striking prelude to the history of European Jewry in the 20th.century, thus giving Dessauer's work an unexpected afterlife.

    Die Beispiele von Paul Celan und Rose Ausländer zeigen einige dramatische Aspekte des komplexen Verhältnisses zwischen Sprache und Identität, bzw. zwischen der deutschen Sprache im Dritten Reich und der literarischen Identität beider Dichter jüdischer Herkunft. Viktor Klemperer ist das Beispiel eines assimilierten Juden, der stets sein Deutschtum und seine tiefe Zugehörigkeit zu Deutschland und der deutschen Kultur unterstreicht. Ruth Klüger gehört zu einer späteren Generation, die sich eigentlich heimatlos fühlt, aber auch in der deutschen Sprache eine literarische Heimat findet. Canetti, Nobelpreisträger, ein sephardischer Jude, der in Bulgarien geboren ist, wählt für sich als Kosmopolit, als Mensch und Dichter eine Heimat, wo die deutsche Sprache und Kultur die Grenzen bilden. It is our aim to focus on certain aspects of the complex relationship between language – particularly German – and homeland/identity as seen in the work of a number of Jewish poets and authors. Initially we wish to point out this conflicting relationship in the work of Paul Celan and Rose Ausländer, two Jewish poets born in Romania. The examples of Viktor Klemperer and Ruth Klüger emphasize the complexity of this specific characteristic in the biography/work of German authors of Jewish origin. Elias Canetti, the Nobel Laureate born in Bulgaria, is a literary personality whose biography shows the importance of German culture influence in Eastern Europe at the beginning of the Twentieth Century: Canetti considers himself a German poet who belongs to the German-speaking cultural and literary world.

    Dieser Artikel behandelt den österreichischen Autor Adolf Dessauer (1849-1916), einen Chronisten der Wiener Sitten der Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert. Von Beruf Bankier und Schriftsteller aus Liebhaberei, veröffentlichte Dessauer zwei Romane ("Götzendienst", 1896 und "Großstadtjuden", 1910), die zu Zeiten rasanter wirtschaftlicher und sozialer Wandlungen in der Habsburger Metropole spielen und die heute nahezu vergessen sind. Dessauer richtet seine Aufmerksamkeit auf die Klasse, die mit dem Siegeszug des Wirtschaftsliberalismus aufgestiegen und sich immer mehr mit der dekadenten Aristokratie der österreichischen Hauptstadt verbunden hatte, deren Geschmack und Umgangsformen sie nachahmte. Im Unterschied zu anderen europäischen Nationen schuf das Bürgertum des Habsburger Reiches kein eigenständiges kulturelles oder ästhetisches Repertoire, sondern versuchte, sich auf dem Wege der Imitation die kulturellen Werte des Adels anzueignen, was eine Klasse von Nachahmern hervorrief, auf die Dessauer seinen durchdringenden und ironischen Blick richtete. Gleichzeitig zeigt Dessauer, wie die Partei der antisemitischen Christdemokraten in Österreich unter der Schicht der Handwerker ihre Wähler rekrutierte, die im Zuge der neuen wirtschaftlichen Ordnung proletarisiert wurden: An diese verarmten Handwerker richtet sich die von Dr. Karl Lueger geführte Kampagne, der den Wirtschaftsliberalismus mit dem Judentum und den Juden identifizierte. In "Großstadtjuden" beschäftigt sich der Autor mit denselben Erscheinungen, jedoch aus einem streng jüdischen Blickwinkel, der ausgeht von einigen Familien und der Art, wie jede von ihnen auf den wachsenden Antisemitismus in der österreichischen Hauptstadt reagiert. Im Rückblick stellt sich die Geschichte der österreichischen Juden, zu jener Zeit die nach Warschau zweitgrößte Gemeinde in Europa, in diesem Roman als ein Vorspiel der Geschichte der Juden Europas im 20. Jahrhundert dar, was diesem literarischen Werk, das zum Vergessen verurteilt schien, ein unerwartetes Interesse verschafft. This article takes a new look at the novels of the Austrian Jewish writer Adolf Dessauer (1849-1916). Dessauer wrote an ironic chronicle of his contemporaries' world in turn-of-the-century Vienna. A banker by profession and an amateur novelist, he published two novels in his lifetime ("Götzendienst", in 1896, and "Großstadtjuden", in 1910), both taking place in the Habsburg capital, which was then undergoing a process of rapid economic and social change. Though his books are nowadays virtually forgotten, Dessauer was a very accurate chronicler of the customs of the social class which ascended with economic liberalism, and which became increasingly close to the empire's declining aristocracy, mimicking its tastes and habits. As opposed to what happened in other European nations, the bourgeoisie in the Habsburg Empire never attempted to construct its own aesthetic and cultural repertoire, but consistently imitated the aristocratic patterns of its time. Dessauer makes a biting and ironical portrait of this class and its attempt at aristocratic appearances. He also shows how Karl Lueger's Christian anti-Semitic party in Austria recruited its voters from the impoverished class of artisans, which had lost space as a consequence of the establishment of a new economic order. Lueger's political campaign was directed towards this growing class, and he identified the rise of liberal capitalism with Jews and Judaism. In "Großstadtjuden" Dessauer looks at the same phenomena, but does so from a strictly Jewish point of view. His second novel portrays the reactions of a number of Jewish families from Vienna to rising anti-Semitism. This historical aspect of the Viennese Jewish community, which was Europe's numerically largest after Warsaw's, is a striking prelude to the history of European Jewry in the 20th.century, thus giving Dessauer's work an unexpected afterlife.

    Este artigo propõe-se a analisar a trajetória do escritor austríaco Fritz Kalmar e seu conto "Der Austrospinner" ("O austro-louco"), incluído na antologia "Das Herz europaschwer", de 1997, à luz das identidades surgidas no contexto da emancipação e da assimilação judaicas na Áustria. Georg von Winternitz, protagonista desta narrativa, encarna, em seu exílio boliviano, os fundamentos de uma identidade austríaca cultivada na velha Monarquia Habsburga, legatária do Sacro Império Romano Germânico, e organiza sua existência no novo país de acordo com valores éticos e com princípios católicos, humanistas e universalistas, cultivados, sobretudo, por literatos austríacos do fim do século XIX e do início do século XX, que se dedicaram à construção da identidade imperial austríaca. Esse sistema de valores, particularmente caro aos judeus austríacos da época do Kaiser Franz Josef, revela uma surpreendente sobrevida nos Andes bolivianos depois de 1938. Ao adotar um menino indígena que está em vias de tornar-se um ladrão, esse personagem não só pretende educá-lo como, sobretudo, pretende fazer dele "um austríaco", o que significa, para o personagem, nele instilar um sistema de valores vinculado à extinta Áustria imperial. A discussão sobre esse conceito, "o austríaco", presente na literatura austríaca do século XIX e do início do século XX, é trazida à tona para tentar compreender o que se encontra por trás deste projeto. Para além dessa questão surge, ao longo da narrativa, uma alusão ao fato de que tanto o narrador quanto o protagonista da narrativa são descendentes de judeus que também "se tornaram" austríacos. "Tornar-se austríaco", assim, e com isto o conceito de 'gelernter Österreicher', temas inextricavelmente ligados ao processo de emancipação e assimilação judaica na Áustria do século XIX, são questões que ressurgem, de forma distópica e anacrônica, na Bolívia dos anos 1950, na trajetória de Kalmar tanto quanto na de seu personagem. This article analyzes Fritz Kalmar's biography and his short story "Der Austrospinner" in the light of the identities created during the decades of Jewish emancipation in Austria. In his Bolivian exile, Georg von Winternitz, the narrative's protagonist, embodies the fundamental values of an Austrian identity that was conceived during the final years of the Habsburg Monarchy, heir of the Holy Roman Empire, and that was particularly dear to Austrian Jews since the times of Kaiser Franz Josef. After his exile, von Winternitz organizes his existence in the new country according to this Empire's system of values. When he adopts an indigenous boy who is about to become a thief, he not only intends to educate him but also intends to turn him into "an Austrian", which, for him, means instilling in him a system of values belonging to the defunct Austro-Hungarian Empire. The discussion about the meaning of "Austrian" is brought to light, in an attempt to understand von Winternitz's ideals and projects. Both the narrative's protagonist and the narrator descend from Jews who also "became" Austrian, and "becoming Austrian" is a fundamental concept both in Kalmar's personal history and in his books.

    Este artigo propõe-se a mapear, por meio de seus registros literários, alguns momentos da longa e ambivalente história do processo de integração e assimilação dos judeus à cultura austro-alemã - uma história que se inicia já nos últimos anos do século XVIII, e cujos reflexos literários reverberam século XXI adentro. A contraposição entre uma visão essencialista de cultura e outra fundamentada no conceito alemão de 'Bildung' é o princípio fundamental que opera nos diferentes desdobramentos desta história aqui analisados, e gera dúvidas e perplexidades ainda hoje significativas para o estudo da literatura austro-judaica. This article aims at tracing the contours of the long and ambivalent history of the integration and assimilation of Jews to Austro-German Culture, by means of some literary renderings of this phenomenon. The beginnings of this process are to be found in the late 18th century, but its literary reflections shine well into the 21st century. The contraposition between an essentialist understanding of culture and a different one, based on the German idea of 'Bildung', are at the core of the different developments of this process analyzed here, generating doubts and perplexities which are still significant for the study of Austro-Jewish literature.

    Em sua "Selbstdarstellung" (2011 [1924]), Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), ressalta as origens judaicas e, nessa linhagem, o êxodo que marca sua família: percurso que desemboca em Viena e, posteriormente, em Londres, estação final. As marcas do exílio nos escritos freudianos reforçam o vínculo com o judaísmo, índice da herança paterna. O episódio do "gorro na lama", descrito na "Interpretação dos Sonhos" (2019 [1900]), como a humilhação do pai de Freud, Jakob, aos olhos da criança que aspirava a sonhos de grandeza, assim como o presente do Velho Testamento (DERRIDA 2001; YERUSHALMI 1992), abrem portas para outras questões centrais nas teorias freudianas. O pai, a "judeidade" (FUKS 2000), remetem às reflexões de Freud sobre religião, notadamente nas obras "Totem & Tabu" (2012 [1913]), "O Futuro de uma ilusão" (2014 [1927]), "Moisés e o Monoteísmo" (2018 [1939]). Dessas, o Moisés de Freud é o texto derradeiro, cujas raízes ligam-se ao povo judeu. Outros temas, como o anti-semitismo, as vantagens das "teses universalistas" da intelectualidade judaica, (SAID 2004), o isolamento e a resistência (GAY 1990) são igualmente importantes para os estudos psicanalíticos. Ser judeu é ser o Outro, e por isso, transitar pelo (des)território psicanalítico: da pulsão, da escuta das histéricas, da sexualidade infantil, da insistência da neurose, do valor do sonho. In his self-portrayal "Selbstdarstellung" (2011 [1924]), Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) underlines the Jewish origin and the exodus that characterizes his family: the road that leads to Vienna and later ends in London. The signs of exile in Freud's writings strengthen the connection to Judaism, an indication of the paternal inheritance. The episode "Cap in the Mud", described in "Interpretation of Dreams" (2019 [1900]) as the humiliation of Freud's father Jacob seen through the eyes of a child who aspired to dreams of greatness, as well as the gift of the Old Testament received from his father (DERRIDA 2001; YERUSHALMI 1992), both open doors to other central issues in Freudian theories. The father, as well as his Jewish condition (FUKS 2000), refer to Freud's reflections on religion, in particular in the works "Totem & Taboo" (2012 [1913]), "The Future of an Illusion" (2014 [1927]), and "Moses and Monotheism" (2018 [1939]). Of these, Freud's Moses is the last text whose roots are related to the Jewish people. Other themes, such as anti- Semitism, the advantages of the "universalist theses" of Jewish intellectuality, (SAID 2004), and isolation and resistance (GAY 1990), are equally important for psychoanalytic studies. To be a Jew means to be The Other and consequently to cross the psychoanalytic (unknown / non-)territory: the territory of the drive, of listening to hysterics, of children's sexuality, of the insistence on neurosis, of the value of dreams.

But he did this in a typical Habsburg way. Rather then emphasizing the incompatibility between these two worlds, Kompert tries, on the one hand, to preserve the memory of the vanishing world of the Jewish Shtetl, and on the other hand to create a synthesis between this world and the multi-lingual and multi-cultural Austro-Hungarian Empire.
