    Abstract: Poetry is very challenging to translators and often even regarded to be untranslatable because the unity of form and content is after Robert Frost’s famous saying considered to be “lost in translation.” This problem has resulted in a highly controversial debate whether to give priority to form or content if both cannot be preserved. In the age of free verse, that often results in a neglect of poetic form. Whether preference is given to form or content, however, it is striking that the general assumption underlying the debate seems to be that form and content are two separable entities and that one can be preserved without the other. My dissertation, on the other hand, builds on the assumption that both form and content are part of the dynamic meaning construal of the translator. Rather than supporting untranslatability claims with this notion, I aim to show that the constraint of poetic form can foster the finding of innovative solutions. I analyse my own and other poetry translations together with their source texts on the basis of categories that were developed from a cross-fertilisation of (cognitive) linguistics, literary and translation studies in order to investigate the inherent potentials of sound, rhythmical and grammatical structures and their realisation in creative reading and translating. My approach is therefore a transdisciplinary combination of theory from different fields and practise. The analysis reveals a multitude of functions of form and formal patterning in the creative meaning construction of the translator and the transFORMations resulting in a translation that is not necessarily inferior to the source text

    Abstract: Poetry is very challenging to translators and often even regarded to be untranslatable because the unity of form and content is after Robert Frost’s famous saying considered to be “lost in translation.” This problem has resulted in a highly controversial debate whether to give priority to form or content if both cannot be preserved. In the age of free verse, that often results in a neglect of poetic form. Whether preference is given to form or content, however, it is striking that the general assumption underlying the debate seems to be that form and content are two separable entities and that one can be preserved without the other. My dissertation, on the other hand, builds on the assumption that both form and content are part of the dynamic meaning construal of the translator. Rather than supporting untranslatability claims with this notion, I aim to show that the constraint of poetic form can foster the finding of innovative solutions. I analyse my own and other poetry translations together with their source texts on the basis of categories that were developed from a cross-fertilisation of (cognitive) linguistics, literary and translation studies in order to investigate the inherent potentials of sound, rhythmical and grammatical structures and their realisation in creative reading and translating. My approach is therefore a transdisciplinary combination of theory from different fields and practise. The analysis reveals a multitude of functions of form and formal patterning in the creative meaning construction of the translator and the transFORMations resulting in a translation that is not necessarily inferior to the source text

Wenn Goethes Überlegungen zu Morphologie und Metamorphose Manifestationen der im späten 18. Jahrhundert auf breiter Front beobachtbaren Verzeitlichungsprozesse darstellen, drängt sich die Frage auf, wie das Verhältnis von Zeit und Form in der als Zeitkunst verstandenen Literatur des Autors wirksam wurde.

    Friedrich August Wolfs "Prolegomena zu Homer" (1795) waren in der intellektuellen Welt des späten 18. Jahrhunderts eine kleine Sensation. Wolf zeigte in seiner Schrift, dass die großen Epen der Antike nicht Produkt eines einzigen genialen Schöpfers waren, sondern "dieser kunstvolle Aufbau erst das Werk späterer Jahrhunderte" war. [.] Die Frage der ursprünglichen Formeinheit des Epos wurde von den Zeitgenossen heiß diskutiert. Dass das Problem der epischen Formeinheit die Gemüter er hitzte, ist nicht verwunderlich, wenn man bedenkt, dass es beim "Epos als einheitsvoller Totalität" (Hegel) um nichts Geringeres geht als einen Gründungsmythos der modernen Literatur. Denn der Roman, der sich im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts zur dominanten literarischen Gattung entwickelte, bezog sich auf das Epos als seinen Fluchtpunkt. Dabei definierte sich der Roman als heterogenes Gebilde durch den Gegensatz zu der vermeintlich homogenen Formeinheit des Epos. Diese Gegenüberstellung wurde durch Wolfs Zweifel an der ursprünglichen Einheit des Epos radikal infrage gestellt.

    Ausgehend von David Wellberys Befund, dass wir es im Bereich der Literatur seit der Transformation des Formenverständnisses ab 1800 mit einem endogenen Formenbegriff zu tun haben, möchte ich den Effekten nachspüren, die die Integration des Kraft-Begriffs in den des Lebens im Bereich der Literatur hat. Denn insofern sich ab 1800 davon sprechen lässt, dass die Formen der Literatur - insbesondere die des Romans - eine Theorie von Formung allgemein und damit eine Theorie von Leben im Besonderen verhandelt, gehe ich davon aus, dass mit der Erweiterung des Lebensbegriffs um den der Kraft, der auch in der Literatur statthat, eine Erweiterung des endogenen zu einem emergenten Formenverständnisses in Betracht gezogen werden muss. Und zwar deshalb, weil Literatur im Gegensatz zur Physiologie Formungsprozesse darstellen und reflektieren kann. Kurzum: Weil die Literatur Kraft in ihr Leben aufnimmt und in das Leben zurückgibt, erweitert sich auch der Funktionsumfang ihrer Formen, sie werden emergent. Ausgemacht wurde diese Funktion indes nicht erst in der Literatur, auch wenn sie erst dort zur Anschauung kommen kann - und genau deshalb zur Lebenskraft des Lebens werden konnte.
