    This book describes the most important kinds of texts in English and introduces the methodological techniques used to analyse them. Three analytical approaches are introduced and compared, describing a wide range of texts from the perspectives of register, genre and style. The primary focus of the book is on the analysis of registers. Part 1 introduces an analytical framework for studying registers, genre conventions, and styles. Part 2 provides detailed descriptions of particular text varieties in English, including spoken interpersonal varieties (conversation, university office hours, service encounters), written varieties (newspapers, academic prose, fiction), and emerging electronic varieties (e-mail, internet forums, text messages). Finally, Part 3 introduces advanced analytical approaches using corpora, and discusses theoretical concerns, such as the place of register studies in linguistics, and practical applications of register analysis.     Die Studie beschäftigt sich mit dem Perfekt im Deutschen und Englischen und dessen Verhältnis zu zwei Klassen von Adverbien. Die Klasse der durativen Adverbien ist seit Dowtys (1979) Word meaning and Montague grammar immer im Zusammenhang mit dem Perfekt diskutiert worden, weil diese Adverbien nur dann mehrdeutig zwischen einer universellen und einer existentiellen Lesart zu sein schienen. Datenrecherchen zeigen aber, dass diese Mehrdeutigkeiten bei allen Tempora vorkommen. Dies führt zu einer neuen Analyse der Durativadverbien, bei der die Quantifizierung über Teilintervalle von der Bedeutung des Durativs abgespalten und die Mehrdeutigkeiten als Skopusambiguitäten gedeutet werden. Die Theorie erzeugt auch Lesarten, die für manche Sprecher nicht akzeptabel sind; diese werden durch eine optimalitätstheoretische Komponente herausgefiltert. Die zweite in der Studie behandelte Klasse von Adverbien sind die Extended-Now-Adverbien wie schon immer. Diese wurden bisher nicht im Zusammenhang mit dem Perfekt diskutiert; hier wird anhand von Korpusdaten argumentiert, dass diese Adverbien eine Behandlung des deutschen und englischen Perfekts als Extended-Now erzwingen. Anterioritätstheorien in der Nachfolge von Reichenbach (1947) sind nicht haltbar. Das durch datenbasierte Untersuchungen motivierte Temporalsystem ist einfacher und kompositionaler als bestehende Ansätze

    Main description: Gibt es eine Kategorie Progressiv im Deutschen? In dieser Arbeit werden, basierend auf der Auswertung verschiedener Korpora, potentiell progressive Konstruktionen (am/beim/im V sein, dabei sein zu V) und der so genannte Absentiv (z. B. schwimmen sein) untersucht, jeweils im Kontrast zum Niederländischen und zur englischen Progressivform (-ing).     Main description: Is there such a thing as progressive in German? Basing its arguments on the evaluation of various corpora, the study discusses potentially progressive constructions (am/beim/im V sein, dabei sein zu V) and the so-called absentive (e.g. schwimmen sein) and contrasts them with Dutch on the one hand and English on the other.     In this book, Yufang Ho compares the text style difference between the two versions of John Fowles' The Magus, exemplifying the methodological principles and analytic practices of the corpus stylistic approach. The Magus was first published in 1966 and was revised and republished by Fowles in 1977. Fowles' own comment on the second edition was that it was 'rather more than a stylistic revision.' The book explores how the revised version is linguistically different from the original, especially in terms of point of view (re) representation. The corpus stylistic approach adopted combines qualitative and quantitative comparison to confirm the overall text style difference. The analysis demonstrates that computer assisted methods can identify significant linguistic features which literary critics have not noticed and provide a more detailed descriptive basis for literary interpretation of (either edition) of the novel. This analysis of The Magus serves as a case study and exemplar of how corpus techniques may be used generally in the study of linguistics.
