Vor diesem Hintergrund entschloss sich der Herausgeber, das Projekt eines Wörterbuchs der Editionsphilologie zu initiieren. Der Band fasst Beiträge und Arbeitsergebnisse zu diesem Vorhaben zusammen und möchte damit zu einer allgemeinen Sensibilisierung für die Problematik editorischer Begrifflichkeit beitragen

    Early in 1965 a group of scholars in the University of Toronto conceived the idea of a continuing conference on editorial problems at which scholars actively at work upon editorial tasks could come together for a free discussion of their work, learning from each other's experience, pooling their common intellectual resources, and seeking out expert opinion and counsel. This volume contains most of the papers presented at the first conference, held in October 1965, in St. Michael's College and University College in the University of Toronto, focusing on the editing of sixteenth-century texts. Among those who attended the Conference were scholars from such diverse disciplines as English and French literatures, Islamic studies, history, bibliography, drama, and others. The papers presented represent varying approaches to editing, but all reflect a sense of dedication of the editor. The first two papers in this volume firmly stress dramatic and poetic editing, and place English and French side by side from the point of view of the modern editor, with many ideas a possibilities thrown out for the beginning scholar. The next two, concentrating on Erasmus and More, introduce humanistic concerns, and chart some of the problems of sixteenth-century editors and translators themselves. In the final two essays, newer ground is broken, first in the study of a publisher in Lyon, with its new documentation of the economics and sociology of sixteenth-century publishing, and its intriguing material on international book trade; the final essay discusses the Frankfurt Book Fair, and the publication of Zeitungen. Richard J. Schoeck has contributed an Introduction from which the following remarks are taken. "'By common consent the constitution of an author's text is the highest aim that a scholar can set before himself: this is the dictum, R.C. Bald has stressed, of a classical scholar, 'and a classical scholar is far more acutely conscious than a student of the modern literatures that for over two thousand years the preservation and elucidation of the texts of the great writers has been the primary concern of literary study.' To the novice, there may be an 'exquisite tedium' in the work of an editor; but the experienced scholar will know that the role of an editor is always at least 'the fastidious one of entremetteur' and to the dedicated the words of John Burnet above will not seem too extravagant." By bringing together the views of experiences of a distinguished group of scholars on editorial approaches to a variety of material this volume will provide valuable background for anyone interested in the editing of texts

Der Band enthält Vorträge, die auf der 11. internationalen Fachtagung der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für germanistische Edition vom 22. bis 25. Februar 2006 in Weimar gehalten worden sind. Das thematische Spektrum des Bandes ist denkbar weit, sodass er sowohl für Germanisten als auch für Musikwissenschaftler und Philosophiehistoriker von Interesse ist. Erörtert werden spezielle Probleme anhand laufender Editionsprojekte wie auch Modelle von Editionen, die sich erst in der Vorbereitung befinden. Zugleich werden theoretische Aspekte des Rahmenthemas zur Diskussion gestellt, sodass der Band insgesamt eine verlässliche Orientierung über die aktuelle Situation in Editionstheorie und -praxis bereithält. The volume contains papers delivered to the 11th International Specialist Conference of the Working Group for Editing Germanic Texts from 22nd to 25th February 2006 in Weimar. The range of topics covered in the volume is extremely broad, so that it is of interest both for Germanists and for musicologists and historians of philosophy. The papers discuss specific problems arising from current editorial projects and models for editions which are at present in a preparatory stage. At the same time, there is a debate around theoretical aspects of the overall subject of the conference, so that altogether the volume provides a reliable orientation to the present state of editorial theory and practice.

    Die Philologie, im engeren Sinn verstanden als Textkritik, ist in den neusprachlichen Fächern zu einer so hochspezialisierten Tätigkeit geworden, daß sie seit längerer Zeit der weiteren Fachwelt kaum noch methodologische Impulse gegeben hat. Dies hat sich mit der Propagierung einer sogenannten 'New Philology' zu Beginn der 90er Jahre schlagartig geändert, die Textkritik auf Texttheorie und Textgeschichte bezieht. Der Band vereinigt die Ergebnisse eines internationalen Kolloquiums an der Universität Jena (19.-21.10.1995), bei dem Romanisten und Germanisten, Linguisten und Literaturwissenschaftler die Thesen der 'New Philology' kritisch prüften mit dem Ziel, den Dialog der verschiedenen Teildisziplinen wieder in Gang zu bringen. In the study of modern languages at universities, philology understood in the narrower sense of textual criticism has become such a specialized activity that for a long time it generated only very few methodological impulses of broader relevance to the subjects and disciplines in which it was practised. This state of affairs changed dramatically with the advent of the so-called 'New Philology' in the early 90s, an approach relating textual criticism to text theory and text history. The volume assembles the findings of an international colloquium held at the University of Jena (19 Oct. to 21 Oct. 1995), at which linguists, literary scholars and specialists in Romance and German Studies subjected the theories of this 'New Philology' to a critical review, the overall objective being to revive the dialogue between the relevant disciplines and sub-disciplines.

    Das Münchner Graduiertenkolleg »Textkritik als Grundlage und Methode historischer Wissenschaften« hat Editoren und Texttheoretiker aus den 'klassischen' philologischen Fächern, aus der Geschichts-, Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft sowie der Philosophie zusammengeführt. Die interdisziplinäre Ausrichtung des Kollegs spiegelt sich in den Beiträgen zu diesem Sammelband, der neben texttheoretischen und editionsgeschichtlichen Arbeiten auch kleinere Editionen und Handschriftenstudien enthält. Der Band erscheint aus Anlaß des 65. Geburtstags von Hans Walter Gabler, der von 1996 bis zum Abschluß des Kollegs im Jahre 2002 dessen Sprecher gewesen ist. The Munich-based German Research Council-funded post-graduate research group 'Textual Criticism as a Basis and Method in Historical Studies' brought together editor and text theoreticians from the Classics, art history, musicology and philosophy. The interdisciplinary nature of the research group is reflected in the contributions to this collection, which contains smaller-scale editions and manuscript studies alongside studies on text theory and editing history. The volume marks the 65th birthday of Hans Walter Gabler, who was spokesman of the research group from 1996 to its conclusion in 2002.

The articles in this volume examine the phenomenon of literary collaboration. The initial concern is a stock-taking process with regard to literature in German, at the same time placing the various forms of literary teamwork in a historical perspective. The variety of different kinds of collaboration (drama, music, journalism) is also thematized with a view to extending the purview beyond that of a mere overview and establishing the phenomenon of literary collaboration more firmly in the focus of scholarly discussion.

As such it provides a documentary overview of the history of scholarly editions of works in modern German.     "The place of the editor in literary production is an ambiguous and often invisible one, requiring close attention to publishing history and (often inaccessible) archival resources to bring it into focus. In The Art of Editing, Tim Groenland shows that the critical tendency to overlook the activities of editors and to focus on the solitary author figure neglects important elements of how literary works are acquired, developed and disseminated. Focusing on selected works of fiction by Raymond Carver and David Foster Wallace, authors who represent stylistic touchstones for US fiction of recent decades, Groenland presents two case studies of editorial collaboration. Carver's early stories were integral to the emergence of the Minimalist movement in the 1980s, while Wallace's novels marked a generational shift towards a more expansive, maximal mode of narrative. The role of their respective editors, however, is often overlooked. Gordon Lish's part in shaping the form of Carver's early stories remains under-explored; analyses of Wallace's fiction, meanwhile, tend to minimise Michael Pietsch's role from the creation of Infinite Jest during the mid-1990s until the present day. Drawing on extensive archival research as well as interviews with editors and collaborators, Groenland illuminates the complex and often conflicting forms of agency involved in the genesis of these influential works. The energies and tensions of the editing process emerge as essential factors in the creation of fictions more commonly understood within the paradigm of solitary authorship.
