    Zentrales Thema des Sammelbandes ist der Begriff der Verfestigung bzw. der formalen Stabilität im Deutschen und im Sprachvergleich, der die Aktualität der neueren lexikographischen und phraseologischen Forschung besonders prägt. Die hier versammelten 23 Beiträge reihen sich thematisch in diese Aktualität ein und behandeln diskursive Aspekte der Verfestigungs- bzw. Stabilitätsproblematik im Diskurs. Arbeiten und Forschungsergebnisse ausgewiesener internationaler Experten werden hier zusammengeführt, die sich der Schnittstelle zwischen Pragmatik und Morphologie/Syntax widmen und vor allem das Deutsche oder den Sprachvergleich betreffende Fragestellungen im Zusammenhang mit Grammatikalisierungs-, Lexikalisierungs- und/oder Phraseologisierungsphänomenen diskutieren.     This paper describes the thematic variation observed in two newspaper genres - news reports and commentaries - in English and Spanish and studies the influence of genre-specific and language-specific constraints on the observed variation. The study is based on the contrastive analysis of certain clausal and discourse-thematic features in a bilingual comparable corpus consisting of a total of thirty-two texts (sixteen news reports and sixteen commentaries), evenly divided into English and Spanish texts. The analysis shows that despite the language-specific features which can be observed in certain thematic selections at clause level, most of the clausal and discourse thematic differences in the material can be related to the different communicative purposes which characterize these two genres. In view of the similarities and statistically significant differences between the two genres in both languages, it is suggested that genre is the major factor affecting the thematic variation in the bilingual sample, while language-specific differences play a secondary role.     Biographical note: Elke Teich teaches at the University of Saarland, Saarbrücken, Germany. The intuition that translations are somehow different from texts that are not translations has been around for many years, but most of the common linguistic frameworks are not comprehensive enough to account for the wealth and complexity of linguistic phenomena that make a translation a special kind of text. The present book provides a novel methodology for investigating the specific linguistic properties of translations. As this methodology is both corpus-based and driven by a functional theory of language, it is powerful enough to account for the multi-dimensional nature of cross-linguistic variation in translations and cross-lingually comparable texts.

    Are the Japanese really courteous, conciliatory, and group-oriented, whereas Germans are direct, adversative, and individual? With reference to the linguistic phenomenon of the directive, the study closely examines these much-rehearsed stereotypes. With a consistently contrastive approach based on an empirical survey, systematic differences and overlaps in the pragmalinguistics of directives are established for German and Japanese. The study describes the extent to which factors like social field of interaction, age, gender, social norms and values, etc. have a significantly different bearing on directive usage behavior in the two language communities. Sind Japaner wirklich höflich, konfliktscheu und gruppenorientiert, Deutsche dagegen direkt, konfrontationsfreudig und individuell? Anhand des sprachlichen Phänomens der Aufforderung werden innerhalb der vorliegenden Arbeit diese gängigen Stereotypen einer genauen Überprüfung unterzogen. Mittels einer systematischen Gegenüberstellung, die auf einer empirischen Erhebung basiert, werden Systemdifferenzen und -überschneidungen in der Pragmalinguistik des Aufforderns im Deutschen und Japanischen herausgearbeitet. Es wird dargestellt, inwiefern Faktoren wie das soziale Interaktionsfeld, Alter, Geschlecht, soziale Normen und Werte etc. das Aufforderungsverhalten in beiden Gesellschaften unterschiedlich signifikant beeinflussen.

Main description: The intuition that translations are somehow different from texts that are not translations has been around for many years, but most of the common linguistic frameworks are not comprehensive enough to account for the wealth and complexity of linguistic phenomena that make a translation a special kind of text. The present book provides a novel methodology for investigating the specific linguistic properties of translations. As this methodology is both corpus-based and driven by a functional theory of language, it is powerful enough to account for the multi-dimensional nature of cross-linguistic variation in translations and cross-lingually comparable texts.

    Are the Japanese really courteous, conciliatory, and group-oriented, whereas Germans are direct, adversative, and individual? With reference to the linguistic phenomenon of the directive, the study closely examines these much-rehearsed stereotypes. With a consistently contrastive approach based on an empirical survey, systematic differences and overlaps in the pragmalinguistics of directives are established for German and Japanese. The study describes the extent to which factors like social field of interaction, age, gender, social norms and values, etc. have a significantly different bearing on directive usage behavior in the two language communities. Sind Japaner wirklich höflich, konfliktscheu und gruppenorientiert, Deutsche dagegen direkt, konfrontationsfreudig und individuell? Anhand des sprachlichen Phänomens der Aufforderung werden innerhalb der vorliegenden Arbeit diese gängigen Stereotypen einer genauen Überprüfung unterzogen. Mittels einer systematischen Gegenüberstellung, die auf einer empirischen Erhebung basiert, werden Systemdifferenzen und -überschneidungen in der Pragmalinguistik des Aufforderns im Deutschen und Japanischen herausgearbeitet. Es wird dargestellt, inwiefern Faktoren wie das soziale Interaktionsfeld, Alter, Geschlecht, soziale Normen und Werte etc. das Aufforderungsverhalten in beiden Gesellschaften unterschiedlich signifikant beeinflussen.

    Zentrales Thema des Sammelbandes ist der Begriff der Verfestigung bzw. der formalen Stabilität im Deutschen und im Sprachvergleich, der die Aktualität der neueren lexikographischen und phraseologischen Forschung besonders prägt. Die hier versammelten 23 Beiträge reihen sich thematisch in diese Aktualität ein und behandeln diskursive Aspekte der Verfestigungs- bzw. Stabilitätsproblematik im Diskurs. Arbeiten und Forschungsergebnisse ausgewiesener internationaler Experten werden hier zusammengeführt, die sich der Schnittstelle zwischen Pragmatik und Morphologie/Syntax widmen und vor allem das Deutsche oder den Sprachvergleich betreffende Fragestellungen im Zusammenhang mit Grammatikalisierungs-, Lexikalisierungs- und/oder Phraseologisierungsphänomenen diskutieren.     This paper describes the thematic variation observed in two newspaper genres - news reports and commentaries - in English and Spanish and studies the influence of genre-specific and language-specific constraints on the observed variation. The study is based on the contrastive analysis of certain clausal and discourse-thematic features in a bilingual comparable corpus consisting of a total of thirty-two texts (sixteen news reports and sixteen commentaries), evenly divided into English and Spanish texts. The analysis shows that despite the language-specific features which can be observed in certain thematic selections at clause level, most of the clausal and discourse thematic differences in the material can be related to the different communicative purposes which characterize these two genres. In view of the similarities and statistically significant differences between the two genres in both languages, it is suggested that genre is the major factor affecting the thematic variation in the bilingual sample, while language-specific differences play a secondary role.
