    The monumental quality of Johann Christoph Gottsched's role in the history of Germany becomes apparent when one compares the situation at the beginning of the eighteenth century and the situation midway through the century. Prior to Gottsched there was no standard for German poetics. There was no repertoire for the German theater in its infancy. There was no standard reference work on German rhetoric. There was no German grammar which could lead to the establishment of a literary language Gottsched (1700-66) filled all these lacunae and gained a position of eminence from about 1720 to - in many fields - until his death, but with regard to the drama only until 1758 when he was knocked from his pedestal, so to speak, by the young G. E. Lessing in the so-called "Siebzehnter Literaturbrief" in the serial publication Briefe die neueste Literatur betreffend. Despite the fact that Gottsched retained his eminence in other fields of literary and philological endeavor, Lessing's and his friend Friedrich Nicolai's criticism was so biting and so effective that Gottsched's own star began to sink just as that of Lessing, Nicolai, and Mendelsohn rose. Because of Gottsched's rejection of Milton and Shakespeare, who, he felt, signified a return to the Baroque, a rejection which led to the controversy between "Leipzig," that is, Gottsched and his followers, and "the Swiss," that is, J. J. Bodmer, J. J. Breitinger and their followers, Gottsched's reputation partially eroded Only since the middle of this century has there been renewed recognition of Gottsched's contributions and his highly significant position in the history of German literature. That conference, also entitled Reception and the Classics, sought to define and articulate the particular role of Classics and classicists in the project of Reception Studies.1 The field of Reception Studies ranges over a vast stretch of time and material, from classical antiquity to the present day, from literature to art, music, and film; it is thus an inherently interdisciplinary field in its encompassing of a great variety of departments and disciplines, each with its own canons, practices, and shared working assumptions. This interdisciplinary practice has formed the intellectual foundation for the present collection: although Reception Studies as a field has grown in scope and energy between conference and publication, we feel that the question of where Classics stands in relation to its peer disciplines remains alive and crucial"--

    In Germany, Weimar Classicism (roughly the period from Goethe's return to Germany from Italy in 1788 to the death of his friend and collaborator Schiller in 1805) is widely regarded as an apogee of literary art. But outside of Germany, Goethe is considered a Romantic, and the notion of Weimar Classicism as a distinct period is viewed with skepticism. This volume of new essays regards the question of literary period as a red herring: Weimar Classicism is best understood as a project that involved the ambitious attempt not only to imagine but also to achieve a new quality of wholeness in human life and culture at a time when fragmentation, division, and alienation appeared to be the norm. By not succumbing to the myth of Weimar and its literary giants, but being willing to explore the phenomenon as a complex cultural system with a unique signature, this book provides an account of its shaping beliefs, preoccupations, motifs, and values. Contributions from leading German, British, and North American scholars open up multiple interdisciplinary perspectives on the period. Essays on the novel, poetry, drama, and theater are joined by accounts of politics, philosophy, visual culture, women writers, and science. The reader is introduced to the full panoply of cultural life in Weimar, its accomplishments as well as its excesses and follies. Emancipatory and doctrinaire by turns, the project of Weimar Classicism is best approached as a complex whole.     This book argues that Nietzsche's polemics against the 19th-century reception of Goethe and Schiller should not obscure his own more positive evaluation of Weimar classicism, as has generally been the case. The authors uncover the continuing influence of Weimar classicism at the very heart of Nietzsche's aesthetic theory, which in turn became the cornerstone of his epistemological and moral concerns. The book takes as its starting point the view that 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' has a single, coherent message that it identifies with what Goethe called 'the gospel of beauty.' A hitherto unappreciated unity of plot, style, and argument is thus revealed in both 'Zarathustra' and Nietzsche's philosophical 'oeuvre' as a whole, showing how he participates in a 'perennial aesthetic.' In this connection Nietzsche's statement in 'The Gay Science' is revealing: 'I want to learn more and more to see what is necessary in things as what is beautiful ? then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful.' The book provides an overview of related scholarly literature; discusses Nietzsche's aesthetic theory in 'The Birth of Tragedy'; recounts the composition of 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' and offers an interpretation of its 'aesthetic gospel'; a concluding chapter explores historical continuities in aesthetic theory. By demonstrating the constitutive function of the aesthetics of Weimar classicism in his philosophy, this book opens up a fresh and original perspective on Nietzsche.     The monumental quality of Johann Christoph Gottsched's role in the history of Germany becomes apparent when one compares the situation at the beginning of the eighteenth century and the situation midway through the century. Prior to Gottsched there was no standard for German poetics. There was no repertoire for the German theater in its infancy. There was no standard reference work on German rhetoric. There was no German grammar which could lead to the establishment of a literary language Gottsched (1700-66) filled all these lacunae and gained a position of eminence from about 1720 to - in many fields - until his death, but with regard to the drama only until 1758 when he was knocked from his pedestal, so to speak, by the young G. E. Lessing in the so-called "Siebzehnter Literaturbrief" in the serial publication Briefe die neueste Literatur betreffend. Despite the fact that Gottsched retained his eminence in other fields of literary and philological endeavor, Lessing's and his friend Friedrich Nicolai's criticism was so biting and so effective that Gottsched's own star began to sink just as that of Lessing, Nicolai, and Mendelsohn rose. Because of Gottsched's rejection of Milton and Shakespeare, who, he felt, signified a return to the Baroque, a rejection which led to the controversy between "Leipzig," that is, Gottsched and his followers, and "the Swiss," that is, J. J. Bodmer, J. J. Breitinger and their followers, Gottsched's reputation partially eroded Only since the middle of this century has there been renewed recognition of Gottsched's contributions and his highly significant position in the history of German literature. Here is the first monograph to appear on Gottsched in almost a hundred years
