    "Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) was a Flemish Baroque painter whose work has largely been overshadowed by his contemporaries Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. Providing new insight on the artist as well as art historical context for his works, Jacob Jordaens and Antiquity emphasizes his strategic intelligence with respect to imagery and the art market and challenges the common characterization of Jordaens as a bourgeois artist of genre scenes. Jordaens's work is examined as an example of classical culture being introduced into the commercial and intellectual life of Antwerp. He was an artist with an unusual talent for conveying imagery from classical literature, ranging from Satyr and Peasant to Diogenes Searching for an Honest Man. Focusing on the theme of antiquity, this volume features eighty paintings, drawings, tapestries, and sculptures from private collections and major museums, including the Museo Nacional del Prado in Spain and the Statens Museum for Kunst in Denmark."--Publisher's website

Comparisons with modern art and literature help to balance the historicism of classical scholarship with transcultural theoretical critique.     "Nicolas Poussin construit un imaginaire de l'Antiquité en collectant ses sources aussi bien dans le domaine visuel (gravure, architecture, sculpture) que littéraire, et ses lettres comme ses oeuvres portent la marque indélébile de la pensée et des motifs antiques. La création picturale de l'artiste a déjà été envisagée de bien des façons. Ses relations avec la France et l'Italie, les différents thèmes déployés dans ses tableaux, la représentation de la nature, sont autant de sujets analysés par les spécialistes. Cette publication a pour objectif de faire le point plus spécifiquement sur le rapport de Poussin vis-à-vis de l'Antiquité. Elle propose une lecture de la culture romaine de l'antique au XVIIe siècle avec en toile de fond le souci de penser les créations poussiniennes comme une fabrique où se rencontrent différentes expérimentations, aussi bien à partir des textes que des connaissances contemporaines de l'art ancien. Un des fils conducteurs de cette publication est en effet de montrer que l'oeuvre de Poussin ne s'inscrit pas uniquement dans une logique de l'emprunt et de l'influence, mais également dans une pratique de l'assemblage, propre au travail d'atelier. En s'engageant davantage dans le processus de création de l'artiste, l'ouvrage cherche à saisir sa manière de travailler, entre les modèles antiques disponibles et les réutilisations qu'il opère dans ses oeuvres. Enfin, il envisage la postérité de cette manière propre à Poussin de concevoir l'Antiquité." P. [4] of cover
