Thomas Mann's Brazilian origin, from his mother Julia da Silva Bruhns, made it possible for the adult writer to make contact with Brazilian or foreign intellectuals, connected to the cultural scene in Brazil. In the first group we find Gilberto Freyre, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda and Erico Verissimo. Living in Brazil, Karl Lustig-Prean (whom later returns to Europe), and the translator Herbert Caro, settled in Brazil. Also, the direct or indirect contact with thinkers and writers, such as Karl Loewenstein, Heinrich Eduard Jacob, Marte Brill and Stefan Zweig has played a part in bringing Thomas Mann closer to the Brazilian universe. This and other points of contact are described in the present article, which intends to diffuse documents and data long unpublished or unavailable, offering up-to-date approaches to Thomas Mann works, as well as indicating biographical and documental information related to the writer, regarding his relationship to Brazil.

Although Heinrich Eduard Jacob visited Brazil in 1932, having written various articles about this trip in particular, and later three books on Brazilian issues, he is almost unknown in Brazil. The following paper, therefore, focuses on the biography of the journalist and writer and his Brazilian books "Hothouse South America" (1934), "Coffee. The Epic of a Commodity" (1935) and "Estrangeiro. Einwandererschicksal in Brasilien" (1951). Furthermore he is put in context with other German-speaking authors who wrote about Brazil in the thirties and forties. These were mainly émigrés fleeing the Nazism such as Stefan Zweig, Richard Katz, Wolfgang Hoffmann-Harnisch, Frank Arnau and Marte Brill. Regarding the image of Brazil espoused by Jacob, it becomes clear that he, as so many other authors, saw in Brazil a "Land of a future" (as he called it) and an alleged existing "racial democracy". Nevertheless, he doesn’t refrain from revealing the proverbial Brazilian cordiality to be only appearance and from pointing out existing difficulties such as the politics regarding the coffee and the negative consequences of the nationalism promoted by the Vargas-Regime. By doing so, he took a view that opposed the one of his friend Stefan Zweig. Einwandererschicksal in Brasilien" (1951).

Brecht's early play 'Baal' contains an allusion to Brazil. The interpretation of the image of Brazil designed in this play might raise a profitable discussion in order to introduce Brecht's theatre into the classroom and to motivate the students to study it. Therefore, the present paper suggests that the study of Brecht's theater should be started with the analysis of his first play and sketches a possible way to do this.

Among the travels of the Austrian writer Ida Pfeiffer (1797–1858) was a two-month-long stay in Rio de Janeiro in 1846. Her travelog ("Eine Frau fährt um die Welt") on this experience, as well as the books of the same genre, contributes to the creation of the imaginary of Brazil among her European readers. But it could also be said that the book represents the author's imaginary of what she might encounter in Brazil, as well as those of other Europeans. This article presents the results of an analysis of the moments in the text in which these imaginaries are made evident by the author, the book being thus considered a historical source of the European imaginary about Brazil in the 19th century.

"Brazil – a country of the future" ("Brasilien – ein Land der Zukunft"), written by Stefan Zweig in the 40s, is one of the few books to portray Brazil as a harmonious country. However, although the book is widely acknowledged as a fine piece of work, one cannot afford to ignore that some other German authors from the same period presented other entirely different views of Brazil. This paper focuses on the novel "Romanceiro Brasileiro" by Ulrich Becher, an author relatively neglected in the Germanic studies. The primary aim is to examine some aspects of the image of Brazil. Unlike Zweig, who shows a tendency to conceal potential conflicts which could threaten his idea of a harmonious Brazil, Becher points out the contradictions and disparities of the country, focusing on aspects which contradict the idyllic image suggested by Zweig, such as Brazil's serious social problems and injustice. By doing so, Becher may have created a more plausible image of Brazil.
