    West Yiddish dialects have hardly been documented at all as they were abandoned almost everywhere at an early stage in favour of German varieties. This study provides transcriptions, translations, and commentaries on recordings from four places in the south-west of the Yiddish language area, where West Yiddish asserted itself for a relatively long time. Most of the texts come from Endingen in Switzerland. The study devotes especial attention to the sociolinguistic situation and to the influences of the co-territorial German dialects. The transcribed excerpts are included as sound documents on the two CDs included. Westjiddische Dialekte sind kaum dokumentiert, weil sie schon früh praktisch überall zugunsten deutscher Varietäten aufgegeben wurden. Diese Arbeit bietet Transkriptionen, Übersetzungen und Kommentare zu Tonaufnahmen aus vier Orten im Südwesten des jiddischen Sprachgebietes, in denen sich das Westjiddische relativ lange hielt; die meisten Texte stammen aus Endingen in der Schweiz. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird der soziolinguistischen Situation und den Einflüssen der koterritorialen deutschen Dialekte gewidmet. Die transkribierten Ausschnitte finden sich als Tondokumente auf zwei Begleit-CDs. Ausgezeichnet mit dem Hugo-Moser-Preis 2005.

    Until about 150 years ago, West Yiddish was the language used by Jews in Germany for their everyday affairs. It stood in close and intensive contact with the dialects of the Christian population. These dialects absorbed numerous loan-words from Yiddish, partly via the mediation of special languages like Rotwelsch ('thieves' Latin'). The dictionary is based on the responses of 108 informants and on written sources from the Bavarian region of Central Franconia. The references are studied for their etymology, semantics, morphology and phonology. Lexicological and word-geographical indications from all over the German-speaking territory are drawn upon to study their dissemination both in Yiddish and in various special languages. Westjiddisch war bis vor 150 Jahren die Alltagssprache der Juden in Deutschland. Es stand mit den Dialekten der Christen in intensivem Kontakt. Die Dialekte haben zahlreiche Lehnwörter aus dem Jiddischen aufgenommen, zum Teil auch über die Vermittlung durch Sondersprachen wie das Rotwelsche. Das Wörterbuch beruht auf einer Befragung von 108 Gewährsleuten und auf schriftlichen Quellen aus dem bayerischen Regierungsbezirk Mittelfranken. Die Belege werden bezüglich Etymologie, Semantik, Morphologie und Lautung untersucht. Ihrer Verbreitung im Jiddischen und den Sondersprachen wird anhand von Darstellungen aus dem ganzen deutschen Sprachraum nachgegangen.
