    "Within two years of the success of his first play Die Räuber on the German stage in 1781, Schiller wrote a drama based on a rebellion in sixteenth century Italy, its title: The Conspiracy of Fiesco at Genoa. A Republican Tragedy. At the head of the conspiracy stood Gian Luigi de' Fieschi (1524-1547), Schiller's Count Fiesco, a clever, courageous and charismatic figure, an epicurean and unhesitant egoist, politically ambitious, but unsure of his aims and principles. He is one of Schiller's mysterious, protean characters who secures both our admiration and disgust. With Fiesco as tragic hero Schiller examines the complex entanglement of morality and politics in his own times that was to preoccupy him throughout his career. The play was a moderate success when performed in Mannheim in 1784; it was more popular in Berlin where, during Schiller's lifetime, it was performed many times in a version by Carl Plümicke, which however radically altered the play's meaning.     Commonly viewed as a revolutionary and propagandist Herman Gorter (1864-1927) is often overlooked despite his lasting contribution to Dutch poetry. This selection of thirty-one poems, translated by Paul Vincent, focuses on Gorter's experimental love and nature lyrics in Poems of 1890, and the Introductionsets the poems in the context of his earlier seminal work 'Mei' (May) as well as his often neglected Socialist verse. The lyrical expansiveness, consistent use of rhyme and vivid imagery of the Dutch landscape that characterises 'Mei' evolves into more fragmentary verse in Poems of 1890, and the joyful celebratory tone of Gorter's poetry increasingly co-exists with a sense of isolation and introspection. This can be viewed in the context of a rapidly changing political scene in Europe in the prelude to the First World War and the Russian Revolution. This is a valuable collection that revisits Gorter's literary and political legacy, and introduces English-speaking readers to a selection of his most accessible and lyrical poems

    "This collection explores the varied modalities and cultural interventions of translation in early modern England and France. Paying attention to the shared parameters of these two translation cultures, it argues for their interaction as an important and untold story. The essays touch on key figures in this story - Mary Sidney, Montaigne and Florio, Urquhart and Rabelais - but also probe the role of translation in the large cultural shifts experienced in parallel by the two countries. Topics explored include: the galvanizing impact of Greek and Hebrew on the two translation cultures; translation's guises in the humanist practice of France and England; as definition of national difference; as a broker of state diplomacy; as a tool for sceptical philosophy; and as a means of imagining a linguistic utopia. The essays' scope ranges from methodological reflections toward a cultural history of early modern translation, to the adventures of a sceptical adverb between France and England"--

Within two years of the success of his first play Die R©Þuber on the German stage in 1781, Schiller wrote a drama based on a rebellion in sixteenth century Italy, its title: The Conspiracy of Fiesco at Genoa. A Republican Tragedy. At the head of the conspiracy stood Gian Luigi dеђ́ة Fieschi (1524-1547), Schillerђ́ةs Count Fiesco, a clever, courageous and charismatic figure, an epicurean and unhesitant egoist, politically ambitious, but unsure of his aims and principles. He is one of Schillerђ́ةs mysterious, protean characters who secures both our admiration and disgust. With Fiesco as tragic hero Schiller examines the complex entanglement of morality and politics in his own times that was to preoccupy him throughout his career. The play was a moderate success when performed in Mannheim in 1784; it was more popular in Berlin, where during Schillerђ́ةs lifetime, it was performed many times in a version by Carl Pl©ơmicke, which however radically altered the plaуђ́ةs meaning. There have been some noteworthy productions on the German stage and television, even if it has remained somewhat in the shadow of Schillerђ́ة other works. In the English-speaking world it is all but unknown and very seldom performed. This translation aims to remedy that oversight

    Commonly viewed as a revolutionary and propagandist Herman Gorter (1864-1927) is often overlooked despite his lasting contribution to Dutch poetry. This selection of thirty-one poems, translated by Paul Vincent, focuses on Gorter's experimental love and nature lyrics in Poems of 1890, and the Introductionsets the poems in the context of his earlier seminal work 'Mei' (May) as well as his often neglected Socialist verse. The lyrical expansiveness, consistent use of rhyme and vivid imagery of the Dutch landscape that characterises 'Mei' evolves into more fragmentary verse in Poems of 1890, and the joyful celebratory tone of Gorter's poetry increasingly co-exists with a sense of isolation and introspection. This can be viewed in the context of a rapidly changing political scene in Europe in the prelude to the First World War and the Russian Revolution. This is a valuable collection that revisits Gorter's literary and political legacy, and introduces English-speaking readers to a selection of his most accessible and lyrical poems
