Although Lessing translated from the major European languages, and translation became a subject of literary criticism in the 18th century for the first time, Lessing’s role in this has seldom been examined. The present volume contains papers on Lessing’s theory and practice of translation, on his translations of individual authors, and on his contribution to the development of German vocabulary. Obwohl Lessing aus den wichtigsten europäischen Sprachen übersetzt und das Übersetzungsproblem in Deutschland in der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts erstmals Gegenstand der Literaturkritik wird, ist Lessings Rolle darin bisher nur selten untersucht worden. Der vorliegende Band enthält Aufsätze zu Lessings Theorie und Praxis der Übersetzung, zu seinen Übersetzungen einzelner Autoren sowie zu seinem Anteil an der Entwicklung des deutschen Wortschatzes.

    Der Autor geht der Frage nach, welchen Qualitätsstandards ein zweisprachiges Fachwörterbuch entsprechen muß, das den Benutzer zum aktiven Gebrauch einer Fachsprache befähigen soll. Gegenstand des untersuchten Wörterbuchs ist die deutsch-französische Rechnungslegung. Ein solches Wörterbuch muß einen terminologisch verengten Begriff von Fachsprache überwinden und eine Brücke zur sogenannten 'Gemeinsprache' schlagen. In dem hier vorgelegten (meta-)lexikographischen 'Werkstattbericht' werden drei Qualitätskriterien untersucht, und zwar in Hinblick auf: 1. die Zusammenstellung des Korpus, 2. das 'Schneiden' der Kollokationen, 3. die Frage der Äquivalenz. The author inquires into the quality standards required for a two-language special-language dictionary to enable its users to make active use of the special language in question. The dictionary examined here is a lexicon of German-French accounting terms. In order to function, such a dictionary must transcend a terminologically restricted concept of special(ist) language and establish and reflect the links with so-called 'everyday' language. The (meta)lexicographic 'workshop report' presented here investigates three quality criteria: 1. the composition of the corpus, 2. the 'cut' of collocations, 3. the question of equivalence.

    Kein Buch wurde häufiger übersetzt als die Bibel; sie existiert in 2817 Sprachen. Karl-Heinz Göttert erzählt in seinem Buch 'Luthers Bibel. Geschichte einer feindlichen Übernahme' die Geschichte dieser Übersetzungen. Von den Fragen nach den hebräischen und griechischen "Originalen" über die Septuaginta und die Vulgata zeigt er, wie die Bibelübersetzungen die Sprachen prägten, die Kultur beeinflussten und mit welchen Strategien die Übersetzer ihre Theologie durchzusetzen versuchten - bis zur Jahrtausendübersetzung Luthers, die den Prozess der christlichen Vereinnahmung der heiligen Schriften der Juden auf den Gipfel treibt. Nebenbei zeigt sich, wie die Übersetzung der Bibel unsere Vorstellungen von Kritik und Aufklärung, Treue und Fälschung, Rationalität und dem, was Sprache leisten kann, entscheidend geprägt hat

    Thomas Mann owes his place in world literature to the dissemination of his works through translation. Indeed, it was the monumental success of the original English translations that earned him the title of 'the greatest living man of letters' during his years in American exile (1938-52). This book provides the first systematic exploration of the English versions, illustrating the vicissitudes of literary translation through a principled discussion of a major author. The study illuminates the contexts in which the translations were produced before exploring the transformations Mann's work has undergone in the process of transfer. An exemplary analysis of selected textual dimensions demonstrates the multiplicity of factors which impinge upon literary translation, leading far beyond the traditional preoccupation with issues of equivalence. Thomas Mann in English thus fills a gap both in translation studies, where Thomas Mann serves as a constant but ill-defined point of reference, and in literary studies, which has focused increasingly on the author's wider reception.
