The manuscript Kiel, University Library S.H. 8 A. 8o, which contains the earliest copy of the so-called Roskilde Chronicle as well as the complete monastic Offices and Masses of the Danish St Knud Lavard (1131), was published in facsimile, together with an edition of the liturgical material, by John Bergsagel in 2010. Comprising, respectively, the first attempt at a history of Denmark and the earliest music that can reasonably be supposed to have been written in Denmark, the publication provided the occasion for an international symposium, held at the Royal Library in Copenhagen in 2012, at which the historical, theological, liturgical and musicological aspects of its contents were discussed in contributions from thirteen invited scholars, which are collected in this volume.

Aristotle in Aquinas's theology' explores the role of Aristotelian concepts, principles, and themes in Thomas Aquinas's theology. Each chapter investigates the significance of Aquinas's theological reception of Aristotle in a central theological domain: the Trinity, the angels, soul and body, the Mosaic law, grace, charity, justice, contemplation and action, Christ, and the sacraments. In general, the essays focus on the Summa theologiae, but some range more widely in Aquinas's corpus. For some time, it has above all been the influence of Aristotle on Aquinas's philosophy that has been the centre of attention. Perhaps in reaction to philosophical neo-Thomism, or perhaps because this Aristotelian influence appears no longer necessary to demonstrate, the role of Aristotle in Aquinas's theology presently receives less theological attention than does Aquinas's use of other authorities (whether Scripture or particular Fathers), especially in domains outside of theological ethics. Indeed, in some theological circles the influence of Aristotle upon Aquinas's theology is no longer well understood. Readers will encounter here the great Aristotelian themes, such as act and potency, God as pure act, substance and accidents, power and generation, change and motion, fourfold causality, form and matter, hylomorphic anthropology, the structure of intellection, the relationship between knowledge and will, happiness and friendship, habits and virtues, contemplation and action, politics and justice, the best form of government, and private property and the common good. The ten essays in this book engage Aquinas's reception of Aristotle in his theology from a variety of points of view: historical, philosophical, and constructively theological Central Aristotelian themes in Aquinas's trinitarian theology / Gilles Emery, OP -- Aristotelianism and angelology according to Aquinas / Serge-Thomas Bonino, OP -- Aquinas and Aristotelian hylomorphism / Raymond Hain -- Aristotle and the mosaic law / Matthew Levering -- Aristotle's philosophy in Aquinas's theology of grace in the Summa Theologiae / Simon Francis Gaine, OP -- Aristotle and Aquinas's theology of charity in the Summa Theologiae / Guy Mansini, OSB -- Aristotelian doctrines in Aquinas's treatment of justice / Christopher A. Franks -- Contemplation and action in Aristotle and Aquinas / Mary Catherine Sommer -- Aristotle in the Summa Theologiae's Christology / Corey L. Barnes -- Aristotle in Aquinas's sacramental theology / John P. Yocum

During the last two decades virtue ethics has become the focal point of renewed ethical and theological interest. To lead a good life, it proves useful to watch those who have mastered the art of living. The conviction that living is an art is at the heart of virtue ethics. Living a good life requires exercise, and is a question of acquiring a virtuous character rather than of complying with external ethical and legal rules. This renaissance partly builds on Thomas Aquinas. He in turn recovered Aristotelian, Ciceronian and Augustinian thought on virtue ethics. The interpretation and development of virtues and vices form the core of his authorship, as the 'secunda pars' of his 'Summa Theologiae' readily displays. And yet, the most important virtues for him are not the moral ones, such as Justice, Temperance, Prudence and Fortitude, but those virtues that are both infused by and aimed at God: Faith, Hope and Love. These are virtues that the philosophers of antiquity were not aware of. To account for them, Aquinas had to adapt the classical understanding of virtues. For Aquinas, the moral virtues come to full fruition only when they are embedded in a life before God, a life lived exercising the God given theological virtues. By ignoring Faith, Hope and Love, the present discussion of virtue ethics not only ignores those virtues that were for Aquinas of utmost importance, but also fails to arrive at a complete understanding of his view of the moral virtues
