    "L'idéologie républicaine, empreinte d'esprit de fraternité, postule que les hommes naissent libres et égaux en droit. Sous l'Ancien Régime, c'est la question du rang qui gouverne l'organisation sociale, et, à travers titres et dignités, la place occupée qui dit l'identité des êtres et des lignages, le pouvoir des acteurs. Étudié par Fanny Cosandey dans l'entourage royal, le rang s'offre en observatoire des rapports de forces des sujets entre eux et, surtout, avec le monarque. Celui-ci, soucieux de manifester sa capacité d'ordonner, se joue du cérémonial comme d'un attribut de la puissance souveraine et d'un instrument des relations sociales. Les manuscrits conservés par les maîtres de cérémonie livrent les ressorts de l'agencement des préséances : de l'organisation palatiale à l'ordre parfait de Versailles ; des querelles de rang à l'art du rituel ; du jeu monarchique des placements à la permanence dynastique; de la conception patrimoniale des rangs à la difficulté de penser l'individu (et le statut des femmes en milieu politique masculin). Au final, les tensions issues de la loi du rang mettent bien en relief les contradictions de l'Ancien Régime : d'un côté, une royauté marquée par les origines féodales de la puissance souveraine ; de l'autre, une société focalisée sur un idéal de conservation des privilèges que les déplacements cérémoniels viennent sans cesse contester. L'arbitrage des querelles se révélera un inusable outil dans les mains du monarque. Ce livre n'est pas la description d'un ordre social totalement dépassé. La France est sans doute un des pays démocratiques qui accorde le plus d'importance aux places, au protocole et au rang.
