Zwar erfüllt der Held als Statthalter des Allgemeingültigen eine wichtige Legitimationsaufgabe. Doch in einer Zeit politischer Differenzierung verliert gerade die Behauptung interessenübergreifender Integrität an Überzeugungskraft. "Politische" Strategien müssen deshalb die moralische Überlegenheit des Heroischen glaubwürdig machen. So wird das Heroische Teil einer auf Konkurrenz und Überbietung angelegten politischen Psychologie. Dies möchte das Buch an Ethiken, Politiken, Hofmannslehren, heroischen Romanen und genealogischer Literatur zeigen Impressive though they are, the monuments to heroic greatness dating from the Baroque period leave us very much in the dark about the actual nature of their subject, at least in political terms. As embodiments of things held to be universally valid, heroes did of course fulfill an important legitimizing function. But in a time of increasing political differentiation, the assertion of a form of integrity transcending individual interests was rapidly losing its convincement potential. Accordingly, 'political' strategies were compelled to trade on the moral superiority of the heroic principle. This made heroism part of a form of political psychology centered on competition and one-upmanship. The book sets out to demonstrate this with reference to ethical works, political writings, courtly manuals, heroic novels, and genealogical literature

    Systemvoraussetzungen: Internetzugang, Web-Browser, mobil: iOS und Android Das Werk Nicolas Borns wird zurzeit neu entdeckt und dabei von klischeehaften Zuschreibungen befreit. Das vorliegende eBook ist diesem Anliegen verpflichtet, indem er intensive Relektüren einzelner Texte Borns vorlegt. Zusätzlich geht er darüber hinaus und fragt in systematischer Absicht nach den Merkmalen und Funktionen politischer Literatur. Das Politische in der Literatur, so die zugrunde liegende These, sollte zuerst in den Konstellationen von Werkgestalt und historischer Situation aufgesucht werden. Entsprechend aktualisiert die Fokussierung auf Born einen konkreten historischen Rahmen für die allgemeine Fragestellung: den Zeitraum zwischen 1967 und 1982, also zwischen dem Umschlagpunkt der 68er-Bewegung und dem Beginn der Kanzlerschaft Helmut Kohls. Diese Phase des politischen wie auch des künstlerischen Experimentierens gerät durch die Konzentration auf 1968 allzu oft in den Hintergrund. Nicht nur Nicolas Born, auch die 70er Jahre insgesamt verdienen in dieser Hinsicht verstärkte Aufmerksamkeit.

    "Politics and Aesthetics in European Baroque and Classicist Tragedy is a volume of essays investigating European tragedy in the seventeenth century, comparing Shakespeare, Vondel, Gryphius, Racine and several other vernacular tragedians, together with consideration of neo-Latin dramas by Jesuits and other playwrights. To what extent were similar themes, plots, structures and styles elaborated? How is difference as well as similarity to be accounted for? European drama is beginning to be considered outside of the singular vernacular frameworks in which it has been largely confined (as instanced in the conferences and volumes of essays held in the Universities of Munich and Berlin 2010-12), but up-to-date secondary material is sparse and difficult to obtain. This volume intends to help remedy that deficit by addressing the drama in a full political, religious, legal and social context, and by considering the plays as interventions in those contexts.     "Politics and Aesthetics in European Baroque and Classicist Tragedy is a volume of essays investigating European tragedy in the seventeenth century, comparing Shakespeare, Vondel, Gryphius, Racine and several other vernacular tragedians, together with consideration of neo-Latin dramas by Jesuits and other playwrights. To what extent were similar themes, plots, structures and styles elaborated? How is difference as well as similarity to be accounted for? European drama is beginning to be considered outside of the singular vernacular frameworks in which it has been largely confined (as instanced in the conferences and volumes of essays held in the Universities of Munich and Berlin 2010-12), but up-to-date secondary material is sparse and difficult to obtain. This volume intends to help remedy that deficit by addressing the drama in a full political, religious, legal and social context, and by considering the plays as interventions in those contexts. In his dramatic engagement with the raison d'état and natural law, Gryphius expressed his personal views about issues of sovereignty and the right of resistance, which differed from the ideas of his contemporaries and led to a uniquely Gryphian form of political theology

    So eindrucksvoll sich heroische Größe in der Barockzeit präsentiert, so unklar bleibt, wenigstens in politischen Zusammenhängen, ihr Wesen. Zwar erfüllt der Held als Statthalter des Allgemeingültigen eine wichtige Legitimationsaufgabe. Doch in einer Zeit politischer Differenzierung verliert gerade die Behauptung interessenübergreifender Integrität an Überzeugungskraft. "Politische" Strategien müssen deshalb die moralische Überlegenheit des Heroischen glaubwürdig machen. So wird das Heroische Teil einer auf Konkurrenz und Überbietung angelegten politischen Psychologie. Dies möchte das Buch an Ethiken, Politiken, Hofmannslehren, heroischen Romanen und genealogischer Literatur zeigen Impressive though they are, the monuments to heroic greatness dating from the Baroque period leave us very much in the dark about the actual nature of their subject, at least in political terms. As embodiments of things held to be universally valid, heroes did of course fulfill an important legitimizing function. But in a time of increasing political differentiation, the assertion of a form of integrity transcending individual interests was rapidly losing its convincement potential. Accordingly, 'political' strategies were compelled to trade on the moral superiority of the heroic principle. This made heroism part of a form of political psychology centered on competition and one-upmanship. The book sets out to demonstrate this with reference to ethical works, political writings, courtly manuals, heroic novels, and genealogical literature
