Sous l'Ancien Régime, c'est la question du rang qui gouverne l'organisation sociale, et, à travers titres et dignités, la place occupée qui dit l'identité des êtres et des lignages, le pouvoir des acteurs. Étudié par Fanny Cosandey dans l'entourage royal, le rang s'offre en observatoire des rapports de forces des sujets entre eux et, surtout, avec le monarque. Celui-ci, soucieux de manifester sa capacité d'ordonner, se joue du cérémonial comme d'un attribut de la puissance souveraine et d'un instrument des relations sociales. Les manuscrits conservés par les maîtres de cérémonie livrent les ressorts de l'agencement des préséances : de l'organisation palatiale à l'ordre parfait de Versailles ; des querelles de rang à l'art du rituel ; du jeu monarchique des placements à la permanence dynastique; de la conception patrimoniale des rangs à la difficulté de penser l'individu (et le statut des femmes en milieu politique masculin). Au final, les tensions issues de la loi du rang mettent bien en relief les contradictions de l'Ancien Régime : d'un côté, une royauté marquée par les origines féodales de la puissance souveraine ; de l'autre, une société focalisée sur un idéal de conservation des privilèges que les déplacements cérémoniels viennent sans cesse contester. L'arbitrage des querelles se révélera un inusable outil dans les mains du monarque. Ce livre n'est pas la description d'un ordre social totalement dépassé. La France est sans doute un des pays démocratiques qui accorde le plus d'importance aux places, au protocole et au rang. This book studies the political transition from the Jagiellon dynasty to an elective monarchy as a political decision-making process in the 1560s and 1570s. It focuses on the Polish-Lithuanian nobility and clergy as 'king-makers' and their relationship with the monarchy.     "In this new book on early modern diplomacy, Jan Hennings explores the relationship between European powers and Russia beyond the conventional East-West divide from the Peace of Westphalia to the reign of Peter the Great. He examines how, at a moment of new departure in both Europe and Russia, the norms shaping diplomatic practice emerged from the complex relations and direct encounters within the world of princely courts rather than from incompatible political cultures. He makes clear the connections between dynastic representation, politics and foreign relations and shows that Russia, despite its perceived isolation and cultural distinctiveness, participated in the developments and transformations that were taking place more broadly in diplomacy. The central themes of this study are the interlocking manifestations of social hierarchy, monarchical honour and sovereign status in both text and ritual. Related issues of diplomatic customs, institutional structures, personnel, negotiation practice, international law, and the question of cultural transfer, also figure prominently"--

    "Many of the wars of the late Republic were largely civil conflicts. There was, therefore, a tension between the traditional expectation that triumphs should be celebrated for victories over foreign enemies and the need of the great commanders to give full expression to their prestige and charisma, and to legitimize their power. Triumphs in the Age of Civil War rethinks the nature and the character of the phenomenon of civil war during the Late Republic. At the same time it focuses on a key feature of the Roman socio-political order, the triumph, and argues that a commander could in practice expect to triumph after a civil war victory if it could also be represented as being over a foreign enemy, even if the principal opponent was clearly Roman. Significantly, the civil aspect of the war did not have to be denied. Particular attention is paid to symbolic acts such as festive coronations, liturgical praises, welcoming of rulers (adventus regis), ritualised settlement of disputes, and symbolic rites during meetings of rulers. The power and meaning of rituals were understandable to both contemporary protagonists and to the authors of sources. These rituals therefore played an essential role in medieval political culture.
